Good morning. It’s Monday, February 28, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Astral will launch the French-language Playhouse Disney Tele on Videotron (Quebec, Canada) tomorrow, March 1, 2011. Videotron will offer the preschool-targeted channel for free for the first three months (channel 46). Additionally, Playhouse Disney Tele programs will be available on illico on Demand (Channel 900), and via illico online and mobile. Playhouse Disney Tele will make the shift to become Disney Junior in May 2011. Playhouse Disney Tele features preschool programming including Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Special Agent Oso, and Jake and the Never Land Pirates, as well as Canadian productions such as Stella and Sam.
MTV Networks International inks programming deals for several Nickelodeon series.
- Telequebec (Canada) acquires new episodes of Nickelodeon’s preschool TV series Dora the Explorer, Go! Diego, Go! and Ni Hao Kai-Lan.
- ATV SB (Hong Kong) picks up the preschool series Wonder Pets! for its English language channel as part of a package deal.
- Canal 11 (Mexico) signs on for the preschool series Jack’s Big Music Show (episodes 101-11, 113, and 201-213).
- TF1 (France) inks a deal for Go! Diego, Go! (episodes 409-416), Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure Special and Dora’s Christmas Adventure, as well as the Ni Hao Kai-Lan special, Journey to Monkey King. Additionally, the deal also includes SpongeBob SquarePants: Clash of the Triton and episodes 135-139 and 143-152, and Penguins of Madagascar episodes 117 & 120-126.
HIT Entertainment names Character Options as the master toy licensee for the new CGI animated series Mike the Knight (52×12) in the UK and Ireland. The preschool series will premiere on Cbeebies this fall 2011. Under the long-term deal, Character Options holds the rights to develop new products under a number of categories including, plastic (figurines and playsets), plush, novelty, role-play and games. The first line of Mike the Knight products are set to be available in fall/winter 2012. Mike the Knight is co-produced with Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana Studios. HIT and Character are also licensing partners on HIT’s brands Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam.
THQ and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products will release the new RIO ( www.riovideogame.com ) video game on Tuesday, April 12, 2011. Based on Fox and CGI animation Blue Sky Studio’s new animated 3D movie, RIO, which opens wide later that week on April 15, the game will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Nintendo DS.
Nickelodeon Consumer Products completes a number of publishing deals for kids-targeted animated properties across Europe, Latin America and Japan.
- In Iceland, Sogur signs on to publish a range of Dora the Explorer books including, coloring and activity books, sticker books, storybooks, work books, ‘lift the flap’ books, and sound books.
- Takarajimasha, a Japanese publisher, releases the first SpongeBob SquarePants publication for Japan, as a mook magazine (a hybrid magazine/book), which will be sold with a pouch and bag giveaway, content covers international and Japanese domestic features including an introduction to SpongeBob characters, storylines and interviews.
- Panini Brazil, a division of Panini, debuts an iCarly magazine in Brazil. The magazine includes storylines, games and photo-stories, as well as guides to setting up a website and starting a blog.
Pokemon Trading Card Game grows this April with the Pokemon TCG: Black & White expansion, including new theme decks and booster packs and featuring 70 new Pokemon.
- Three Pokemon TCG: Black & White theme decks debut at retailer nationwide April 6. Each of three new theme decks, Green Tornado, Red Frenzy, and Blue Assault, will feature a special code to unlock an identical digital deck for play in the new Pokemon TCGO: Trainer Challenge (
- The Pokemon TCG: Black & White expansion 10-card booster packs will be available at retail from April 25. The four boosters feature brand-new Pokemon on their packaging, with each booster pack including one guaranteed parallel foil card.
