Cynopsis: Kids!
02.25.13

Good morning. It’s Monday, February 25, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Smile! Beginning today, Cynopsis: Kids! is going daily for the next 10 weeks. That means all the kids news and analysis, including ratings and Upfront coverage, will be coming to you Monday through Friday, so be sure to check your early-morning inbox.

Today’s Top Headlines

Thanks to the new Disney-BSkyB venture, Sky Movies Disney now has an exclusive full-year window on new releases. The movie channel, set to launch March 28 in Britain and Ireland, marks the first time Disney has launched a co-branded traditional movie channel. The net will air new Disney releases intermixed with Disney classics on the linear channel as well as on demand via smart devices. As part of the deal, BSkyB also lassoes first subscription pay TV movie rights to other titles distributed by Disney.

Nickelodeon may be a little late to the game, but the Nick App for iPad smacks of “worth waiting for.” Loaded with 1,000-plus pieces of Nick programming accessible by swiping a movable tile layout, the app is heavy on free videos, games and animated shorts a response to network research over the past two years that showed that kids don’t necessarily want to watch full episodes of shows on their tablet. Full episodes of current shows will be available to authenticated subscribers to Nick’s TV Everywhere package. The network says it will use the app to test drive original and spinoff content.

Digital Updates

Three of Sesame Street’s most popular titles Elmo Loves 123s, Another Monster at the End of This Book and Potty Time With Elmo–are available for the first time for Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet. Sesame Workshop also made more content available on Amazon’s Kindle FreeTime Unlimited service… In related news, Sesame Street is closing in on 1 billion views on YouTube. Sorry, Harlem Shake.

The Jim Henson Co. is enlisting U.K. developer Mindshapes to create apps to support its current preschool series Sid the Science Kid and Pajanimals plus interactive content for upcoming Henson properties.

Cupcake Digital released its latest story app to complement preschool series Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! The Wubbzy Loves You app, available on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play and Barnes & Noble, includes three reading modes and a slew of interactive ventures.

PBS Kids is trotting out two new apps. The first, based on the series Dinosaur Train, is available on the iPad for $1.99. Another app, based on The Electric Company, is available free on the iPad and Amazon Kindle. Both aim to encourage math and literacy skills through interactive games.

Programming Picks

Feature film The Amazing Spider-Man makes its television debut on Starz March 2, with additional airings throughout the month.

Nickelodeon U.K. is teaming with Sky 1 HD for the first time on a new U.K. series, Jordan & Perri’s Ultimate Block Party, produced by Princess Productions. The series will premiere on Nick this summer, followed by the Sky 1 HD transmission later in the year.

Licensing News

Marvel Entertainment and Threadless are launching a new collection of Spider-Man apparel designed by fans, who submitted their depictions of the superhero clashing with his biggest foes. Two of the 26 new T-shirt designs, voted on in the Threadless global community of 2.2 million, are fan-created. All will be sold exclusively on Threadless.com. The Spidey collection heralds an ongoing collaboration between Marvel and Threadless; a contest to create an Iron Man line is slated for later this year.

…And More Kids News

As Netflix preps its power play in the original kids content business, there’s more research showing the service is eroding the customer base for pay TV services. Nearly one-quarter, 23%, of Netflix subscribers in a new Cowen & Co. survey said they have canceled their premium TV service and instead are paying for broadband access to television shows and movies streamed over the Internet. Among the 1,200 people surveyed, 46% said they had access to Netflix streaming, including 28% who were paying for the SVOD service.

Out of the box? Reaction to the Sony Playstation 4 announcement has been mixed. While the console promises agility and graphical prowess, the concept of game-sharing via the cloud, an aspect of the console that was heavily touted during the unveiling, remains skimpy on details. The initial batch of PS4 games include Deep Down, Killzone: Shadow Fall and Watch Dog.

The Story that wasn’t: Rumors of an impending “Toy Story 4” lit up the Twitter-verse for a day last week before the social media circuit became aware there was zero merit to the story, according to sources at Disney Pixar.

Hulu’s Kids Lock–the virtual button that “locks” users into the Hulu Kids experience is now available for iPad apps. The feature has been available for Android devices for some time.

Six Flags Entertainment Corp. and Kidz Bop are teaming up for a talent competition. The live audition portion of the Kidz Star USA 2013 Talent Search for kids and teens ages 15 and under will stop at 10 Six Flags parks during the summer, the first time since the competition’s launch in 2010.

Good Deeds

Cartoon Network is raising the bar, or rather the flag, on its well-ensconced Stop Bullying: Speak Up campaign. To complement its broad online, social media and television outreach, the network is encouraging schools, community centers and businesses to fly specially designed flags acknowledging their stand against bullying. The campaign kicks off with support from Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa), who is preparing to reintroduce the Safe Schools Improvement Act in Congress, and LG Electronics USA, which is partnering with Cartoon to deliver 2,000 bullying prevention toolkits and flags to schools across the nation through the American Federation of Teachers. Educational materials and flags are also available free online at StopBullyingSpeakUp.com.

Executive Moves

Entertainment management and production company The Gotham Group and talent management firm Principal Entertainment are combining into one company, to be housed in The Gotham Group’s Los Angeles offices.
