Watching ad supported shows on Hulu via Apple‘s new iPad may be possible in the future but it will cost users a subscription fee, according to AllThingsD, citing “multiple people familiar with the company.” The integration, the first third-screen appearance for the NBCU/News Corp./Disney joint venture, is unlikely to occur in time for the iPad launch as it would require adapting Hulu’s Flash video into a different format. (Like the iPhone, the iPad does not support the Adobe video standard.)
CBS has struck a deal with Apple to begin selling some of its television episodes on iTunes for 99 cents each – half the current price of full episodes, reports the FT. Other networks have agreed to similar terms and the price changes could come into effect in time for the launch of the iPad next month.
The Sporting News will begin charging $2.99/month for a subscription to its digital daily Sporting News Today covering viewing across multiple devices, per paidcontent.org.
William Shatner has agreed to star in a sitcom pilot for CBS based on Sh*t My Dad Says, the Twitter account followed by over 1.1 million users set up by a 20-something year old to share wisdom handed down from his 73 year old father, per THR. The show is executive produced by David Kohan and Max Mutchnick of Will and Grace fame.
E-book publisher Vook raised $2.5 million in seed funding from multiple investors including Ron Conway, Michael Maples and Huffington Post Chairman Ken Lerer. Vook has formed strategic publishing relationships with Simon & Schuster, HarperStudio and Hachette Filipacchi Media in the U.S. and has announced Vook titles with several bestselling authors including Seth Godin and Anne Rice.
The IAB unveiled its annual Service Excellence award winners, honoring outstanding member contributions to IAB industry-related initiatives. 2009 Sales Excellence Award Winners include: Google for Long Term Achievement; Yahoo!, Inc. for Innovation; Federated Media Publishing as Best Newcomer; and Kevin Sullivan of Burst Media as AE of the year.
Google closed on its $124.6 million acquisition of video compression specialist On2 Technology announced last year. On2’s technology helps format video for mobile, Flash, Voice-over-IP and embeddable devices.
In his first conference call with analysts, new DirecTV CEO Michael White outlined upcoming plans for the satellite TV company, per Multichannel. The company’s plans include the launch of multi-room DVRs, expanding PPV offerings, testing 3D movies and sporting events such as the MLB’s 2010 All-Star Game and rolling out additional mobile video initiatives.
Nearly 13% of viewers tuning in to the Olympic opening ceremonies last week were also surfing the web, according to preliminary data gathered from Nielsen‘s single source panel of TV and internet users. This group of multitaskers averaged 32 minutes of simultaneous activity, per user. The website of choice for opening ceremony viewers was Facebook, with an estimated 41% of simultaneous users spending time on the social networking site. Google and Yahoo were the next two most popular sites, with 38% and 35% of simultaneous users visiting the sites, respectively.

The LG Arena is a new handheld mobile phone/video device shipping from AT&T beginning Feb. 26 that presents music, movies, pictures and contact info through a brand new visual touchscreen interface. The Arena, which costs $200 with a $50 mail-in rebate and a two-year service commitment, features a 3-inch WVGA screen and a 5 megapixel camera with video recording. AT&T is also offering its $10/month Mobile TV package with the phone providing live and time shifted programming courtesy of Flo TV.
Twitter Tracker is a new visual interface on NBCOlympics.com that allows you to track athlete tweets by sport. Stamen Design developed the tool, according to the Twitter blog. Stamen tracked over 1,000 tweets/minute following Shaun White’s final run on the halfpipe last week.
Google tapped DoubleClick veteran Barry Salzman as Head of Media & Platforms for the Americas. In the new position he is charged with overseeing all non-search advertising for Google’s content network, YouTube, and display-ad platforms DoubleClick Ad Serving and DoubleClick Ad Exchange. Barry reports directly to Henrique de Castro, Google’s VP/Global Media and Platforms.
Time Warner hired former News Corp. senior executive Gary Ginsberg as EVP of the company, effective April 1. In this newly created role, Gary will work with Time Warner senior management team to help oversee the company’s marketing, public affairs and communications efforts. He will report to Time Warner Chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes.
Mike Sego, creator of the (fluff)Friends app for Facebook, has joined San Jose-based teen site Gaia Online as Chief Product Officer. He comes aboard with Chris Davis, Gaia’s new SVP/Sales, who most recently served as head of global sales for youth virtual world Neopets.
