Cynopsis: DIGITAL

02/01/10

Good morning, it’s Monday, February 1, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

In a bid to compete with Facebook, Google announced it is transporting its Google Social Search project to its main search engine, allowing users to see content from their friend’s feed amidst other search results. Beginning this week, anyone logged into their Google account will find friends’ pictures that have been published to Yahoo’s Flickr or Google’s own Picasa Web Albums pop up. A part of the “My social content” feature, web content written or published by contacts relevant to the search query will also appear, include anything from bar reviews on Yelp to rants posted on Twitter.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Football fans will have plenty of content to turn to on NFL.com this week leading up to the big game, including live online streaming of the carefully orchestrated Super Bowl Media Day. The interface allows you to choose between a dozen different feeds following featured members of the Saints and Colts. The site won’t feature video coverage of the actual game on Sunday, but you will be able to choose from 10 international radio broadcasts in their native languages including Spanish, Italian, Russian and Japanese.

For those of you who still find the network trapped behind a sports tier, Hulu has added a new channel from the NFL Network featuring 8 original shows including America’s Game, Hard Knocks, Live Wire, Team Highlights and Superbowl Highlights. If you’re someone who watches the Superbowl for the commercials check out Hulu AdZone, featuring a compendium of Super Bowl ads from last year. Spots from this year’s game will be added from next week.

The newly redesigned CNN announced it posted a banner year in 2009, leading news and information sites in a variety of categories including Time Spent Watching Video (averaging 304.5 million minutes/month); Total Usage Minutes (1.3 billion total usage minutes/month); and Overall market share (9% average monthly,) citing Nielsen Online. Other highlights included:

  • Serving 1.3 million concurrent video streams during President Obama’s inauguration
  • Averaged 11.8 million unique visitors per month on CNN Mobile
  • Receiving more than 203,000 iReport submissions, up 21% from 2008

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Manhattan-based creative shop Maude NY has come up with an innovative way to promote MTV‘s new 8-episode series The Buried Life, which premiered Monday, Jan. 18. As part of a storefront takeover on 43rd and Fifth Ave., a touch screen had been set up allowing passers by to select one of three videos. Each poses the main question from the series – “what do you want to do before you die?,” asking users to input their answers, which are then cross-posted via Facebook Connect as well as to theburiedlife.com.

Univision has partnered with The Clorox Co. to co-develop original content within an interactive platform through which Latinas can discuss topics relevant to their lives. Compartiendo Entre Amigas (Sharing Among Friends) will encourage women to share constructive stories. The multiplatform deal was negotiated by OMD, along with their agency partners OMD Latino and Alma DDB.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Gay dating site ManCrunch.com was planning to have a big coming out by running its first commercial during the Super Bowl. That is until CBS‘ Standards and Practices division rejected the creative. The decision has sparked a sizeable controversy, especially after CBS had come out earlier in the week saying that it would accept advocacy ads that were “responsibly produced.” (CBS made the statement after it approved an ad from Christian group Focus on the Family, believed to present an anti-abortion message featuring Florida QB Tim Tebow.)

Likely encouraged by Apple’s decision to allow publishers to charge more than $10 for best sellers, Amazon.com has removed all e-book titles published by Macmillan off Amazon and its Kindle e-reader site in a pricing dispute, according to a statement issued by the publisher on Saturday.

Public opinion research firm Zogby International announced it will receive a substantial investment from Brazilian opinion research group, IBOPE (the Brazilian Institute of Public Opinion and Statistics). Zogby’s headquarters and call center will remain in Utica, NY and the company will maintain its offices in Washington, DC and Miami, FL.
