Cynopsis: DIGITAL
02/13/12
Good morning. It’s Monday, February 13, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
I had the chance to chat with Jesse Redniss, Senior Vice President of Digital, USA Network, about the network’s plans to build online user engagement and second-screen components around the 136th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which airs tonight and tomorrow. In the Q&A, Mr. Redniss also discussed how USA Network has valued digital content and Social TV in the past and what it sees for the trend in the future.
In your opinion, what is the value of offering viewers content across multiple platforms? Ubiquitous access across multiple platforms for viewer and user consumption helps shape the overall digital experience with our original content – moving it from the traditional “sit back” to a more active and lean forward environment. With multiple layers of social and content engagement opportunities the network gains an enhanced connection with fans and extends the brand experience. Additionally, our brand partners benefit from a more organic connection to our loyal fan base.
How is USA Network using additional platforms to boost coverage around this upcoming Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show? This year we have expanded our Social TV initiatives with our first live video coverage during the day and social viewing experiences including community chatting, interviews, Facebook and Twitter integrations and real-time behind the scenes moments from the floor. We are partnering with UStream for the video coverage, which will be accessible worldwide via online and mobile phones. Subaru of America is sponsoring a special Character Chatter with expert Chuck Bessant on Tuesday, February 14 at 10pm ET.
What makes the WKC a great program to show how online engagements can impact TV viewership? WKC presents a unique opportunity to track this activity back to viewership because of its very specific niche target demographic. While there isn’t an industry standard yet that tracks digital activity to viewership in a standardized manner, USA Network is working to closely monitor, track and standardize this connection.
How has the network used Social TV/second-screen/social gaming components in the past to build viewer engagement? USA Network has worked with industry-leading partners to use cutting-edge technologies, such as check in services like GetGlue and Echo to build new ways for fans to interact with show producers, talent and community. It’s something that’s allowed USA to gain valuable insight into future programming, audience interest and loyalty. We also launched CLUB PSYCH in 2010, which quickly became one of the most talked about successful examples of gamification in our industry, due to our rabid fan base and their excitement about being rewarded for online activity.
Looking toward the future: What do you see on the horizon for Social TV, and what role does USA Network want to play as part of that trend? With each of our digital executions, USA Network is lending its hand in shaping the overall definition of Social TV. We work closely with our show producers, writers and talent to ensure the multiplatform executions act as storytelling extensions and seamless experiences for the fans. This is the make or break inflection point for a network in Social TV. We see this trend continuing and possibly having Social TV influence what we see in original programming, as consumers share their likes and dislikes.
Hulu and Netflix have separately had discussions about the possibility of introducing their respective services to the Russian market, according to Russian newspaper Vedomosti. Hulu, specifically, has met with Russian film studios and video services, and may choose to partner up with a local video content provider (Broadband TV News cites Lvi.ru and Now.ru as possibilities) that owns the rights to a large library of Russian content.
CBS has unveiled a new documentary web series, called Anatomy of a TV Hit: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which offers fans access to behind-the-scenes content in regards to the making of the popular crime procedural show. Available on CBS.com, the series consists of nine webisodes. It features interviews with the show’s executive producers, such as Jerry Bruckheimer; cast, including William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger; as well as CBS Corp.’s CEO Leslie Moonves and President of CBS Entertainment, Nina Tassler. Writers and crew members will offer fans a window into the creation of the show’s pilot, along with a look at every detail surrounding the making of an upcoming episode, “Stealing Home,” which will air on Feb. 22. Additional features will include various live chats with crew members through a CBS.com integration with Facebook, as well as a bracket-style voting game where fans select their favorite episodes from all 12 seasons of the series.
On the verge of beginning shipments of its streaming devices in the U.K., Roku has landed 40 content partners, including Netflix, Fox News, Crackle and, most recently, BBC iPlayer. The Roku LT and Roku 2 XS will be available for purchase in the U.K. and Ireland at retailers and online through Amazon.
MOVL, an Atlanta-based company that builds apps for connected TVs and mobile devices, has landed $500,000 in funding from billionaire/investor Mark Cuban, reports AllThingsD. The company’s MOVL Connect Platform wirelessly connects multiple devices with each other, and is also available for developers to build apps for those platforms. MOVL recently developed an application called SwipeIt that enables users to “swipe” content from one device to another. It is now in the process of enhancing its Connect solution by making it compatible with Wi-Fi and 3G networks. Additionally, AllThingsD reports that MOVL is developing an interactive ad unit, as well as a platform called “Kontrol TV,” which will work as a central hub through which users can access multiple TV-related apps, tweets, trends and other social media mentions related to TV shows.
During LinkedIn‘s fourth quarter earnings call (quickly: it exceeded expectations and pulled in $167.7 million in 4Q revenue, a 105% increase over the last quarter of 2010), the company announced that it will start introducing advertising within LinkedIn’s mobile apps, per TechCrunch. According to CEO Jeff Weiner, the company has recently been developing the necessary infrastructure, and now is all set to go. Weiner said that over 15% of all unique visitors to LinkedIn are through the social network’s mobile apps. He said mobile is the company’s fastest growing category, and will be a focus of investment in 2012.
Netflix has settled a class-action lawsuit, which claimed that the company violated the federal Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA), by agreeing to pay $9 million, according to its own regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission this past Friday. Other terms of the settlement were not disclosed. However, a statement from Netflix spokesperson Steve Swasey said Netflix admitted to “no wrongdoing” as part of the settlement. Also, “this matter is unrelated to the company’s concerns about the ambiguities contained in the VPPA, which keep Netflix from offering its U.S. members the ability to share their instant watching information with their Facebook friends, an experience Netflix members currently enjoy in 46 other countries,” said Swasey.
Apple‘s patent battle with Samsung (and indirectly, Google) has now extended to California. The company has filed a lawsuit in the Northern District of California federal court seeking a temporary injunction that would stop sales of the new Galaxy Nexus smartphone, which Apple says violates four of its patents, according to report from paidContent.org. The Galaxy Nexus is powered by Google’s new Android 4.0 operating system, otherwise known as Ice Cream Sandwich.
Iconicfuture is a company that offers a marketplace for digital and virtual merchandising by linking up branded properties with all sorts of digital games. The company has signed a digital merchandising rights deal with Paws, Inc, the trademark owner and licensor of the Garfield brand. Game developers who want to include the cartoon cat into their games, mobile apps or “virtual worlds” can now do so through Iconicfuture.
There seems to be a healthy amount of referral-based web traffic exchanged between the major social networks (Facebook and Twitter) and the smaller ones (like Pinterest, Tumblr and Meebo), according to findings from Compete, per eMarketer. Compete found that in November 2011, Pinterest’s U.S. referral traffic to Facebook increased 57.22% over the previous month. In fact, one of the top sites visited by U.S. web users after Pinterest was Facebook, at 13.94% of the time. Looking at the opposite direction, Compete found that the share of Pinterest’s traffic coming from referrals on Twitter in November 2011 increased 48.61% over October 2011. Meebo, which saw its U.S. traffic referral to Facebook increase 314.48%, saw its share of traffic coming from Twitter spike 262.05%. Tumblr’s and Instagram’s jumped 817.78% and 40.8%, respectively.
