CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

02/13/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, February 13, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The shame of it is Michelle Kwan had to bow out of the Olympics. A blow to Kwan, the sport and to NBC for one of the biggest draws in women’s figure skating.  The second blow to NBC came when she declined the offer to sit in the broadcast booth, says an AP report.  Lest you think NBC may have behaved like vultures, know that NBC contacted Kwan about the idea of joining the broadcast team a month ago when it first appeared her injury would keep her from the Olympics altogether. Kwan turned it down then as she continued her bid to participate in the games.  The second offer and decline came shortly after her announcement to withdraw.

*MORE GOOD STUFF*ABC Program Changes:  Effective tomorrow, a few changes on Tuesday nights, courtesy of ABC.   According to Jim will kick off the night (except for tomorrow when it will be preempted by a Charlie Brown Valentine’s Day special), Rodney at 830p, According to Jim again at 9p and George Lopez at 930, followed by Boston Legal.  The new runs on Tuesday 9-10p for Jim and Lopez will be in addition to their original time periods (Tues and 8p and Wed at 8p, respectively).  As to Commander in Chief, look for its return on April 18.  Originally Commander in Chief had been put on hiatus so make room for Sons & Daughters which premieres on Tuesdays at 9p starting March 7.

ABC World News Tonight anchor Elizabeth Vargas announced she’s pregnant, and due in August.  It was just a couple of months ago ABC announced the dual anchor team of Vargas and Bob Woodruff, and just two weeks ago Woodruff was seriously injured in Iraq. Substituting for Woodruff are GMA anchors Charles Gibson and Diane Sawyer.  Vargas is expected to continue with her anchoring duties of both ABC World News Tonight and 20/20 up until late summer.  As to Woodruff, while he continues to show improvement, there are no estimations yet as to when he may be able to return to the air.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *ABC has ordered up three more comedy pilots:

  • Women of a Certain Age focuses on a recently widowed woman as she begins her life again with the help of her two best friends. This project is from Touchstone TV.
  • What Happens on a Bus from Touchstone TV and Brillstein-Grey, is about a young news reporter and the life on the presidential campaign trail
  • From HBO Independent Prods is Pink Collar is about women on the job in a blue collar environment

In development at NBC is a new project from Dick Wolf’s Wolf Films called Power.  Interestingly, this one is not set in a court room, though attorneys are involved.  This show is on the federal level – agents and attorneys – involved in a task force to investigate Hollywood scandals that infringe on federal laws, including extortion and wiretapping.

Casting Notes ...

One of the projects on the development slate for the CW is an untitled drama from Kevin Williamson, and starring Gail O’Grady, about a young teen and his family who move to a new development in Palm Springs, according to Hollywood Reporter.

CBS‘ drama pilot Orpheus has added Nick D’Agosto as the lead. The project is about a young guy who involves himself in a cult.

Also at CBS, the drama pilot Jericho which is set in a small town following a nuclear disaster, has added Skeet Ulrich to the cast as the Mayor’s adult son who ends up an unlikely yet driving force. Erik Knudsen has also joined the cast as an orphan.

ABC has cast Sofia Vergara in an untitled comedy that will star Donal Logue about a group of guys who decide to launch their plan of robbing a celebrity. Other cast members in this project include Kevin Michael Richardson, Lenny Venito and Josh Grisetti, per Hollywood Reporter. This project is from Touchstone TV and Worldwide Pants.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Kevin Kulas has been promoted to Executive Director/Booking at VEE Corporation.  He will take over the leadership reins for the booking and routing of VEE’s national and international live touring family shows.

The Weather Channel Interactive announced that Jay Freshwater has been named Sales Director.  Jay will oversee the company’s Chicago sales office, effective immediately.  He will manage sales efforts for weather.com, Desktop Weather by The Weather Channel and The Weather Channel Mobile.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1861: The earliest military action to be revered with a Medal of Honor award is performed by Colonel Bernard J.D. Irwin, an assistant army surgeon serving in the first major U.S.-Apache conflict. Near Apache Pass, in southeastern Arizona, Irwin, an Irish-born doctor, volunteered to go to the rescue of Second Lieutenant George N. Bascom, who was trapped with 60 men of the U.S. Seventh Infantry by the Chiricahua Apaches. Irwin and 14 men, initially without horses, began the 100-mile trek to Bascom’s forces riding on mules. After fighting and capturing Apaches along the way and recovering stolen horses and cattle, they reached Bascom’s forces on February 14 and proved instrumental in breaking the siege.
