2/12/07

Good Morning, it’s  Monday, February 12, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

The fallout of Adult Swim’s guerrilla marketing campaign fiasco causing the City of Boston to shut down roads and bridges on January 31 has resulted in the Friday resignation of EVP/GM Jim Samples of the Cartoon Network. In an internal memo, Samples wrote: “I deeply regret the negative publicity and expense caused to our company as a result of this campaign. As general manager of Cartoon Network, I feel compelled to step down, effective immediately, in recognition of the gravity of the situation that occurred under my watch.” Turner Broadcasting has been ordered to pay a $2 million fine by the Massachusetts Attorney General office and the company issued numerous public apologies for its gaffe. Samples had been with Turner for 13 years. Turner Broadcasting has not named a replacement for Samples, and in the meantime the network’s senior management team will report to Mike Lazarus, President, Turner Entertainment Group.

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. and EchoStar Communications Corporation’s DISH Network reached an affiliation agreement last Friday that will put Court TV back on DISH Network. Court TV will resume its channel 204 position on DISH Network’s America’s Top 200 package that reaches around 8 million subscribers. The legal channel was dropped from DISH Network on January 1 due to a dispute over how much EchoStar would pay for the channel and the tier it would be carried on. Details of the new agreement were not disclosed, yet both companies were apparently pleased with the financial arrangements, according to a joint statement.

The Biography Channel
debuts a new 13-episode series with celebrity reporter Neil Sean as host. Confidential with Neil Sean will begin February 17 at 530p and each half-hour show will go behind-the-scenes at celebrity parties, movie premieres and other industry events.

~ BROADBAND & DIGITAL ~

YouTube has signed a deal with Digital Music Group to deliver more than 4000 hours of classic TV content to the viral video site, reports The Wall Street Journal. Digital Music will receive a percentage of the ad revenue from ads that appear on “watch pages” that includes its TV content.  Content controlled by Digital Music includes Gumby and I Spy, and will be free and available to users in the next few weeks. Additionally, using a filtering technology from Digital Music, YouTube will be able to identify songs to which Digital Music owns the rights and are being used without the proper authorization. A percentage of the revenue from ads on the musically-unauthorized “watch” pages will also go to Digital Music.  The filtering software is not available just yet.
