Good Morning. It’s Monday, December 3, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. Could be by the time you’ve read this email, Don Imus will already have made his official return to radio. Imus in the Morning kicks off on Citadel Broadcasting’s WABC 770AM this morning at 6am, with long time associate Charles McCord in tow. Imus has been off the air since the debacle back in April. In addition to the daily radio show, Imus will be broadcast live on RFD-TV from 6-9am weekday mornings. Omaha-based RFD is currently available in 30 million homes via DISH, DirecTV as well as a handful of cable systems. Tonight’s Premieres: ~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~
Using a business model similar to the Saturday morning model wherein the broadcast networks contract out their kids programming block to a single content producer, NBC has put together a similar deal for primetime. In a first look deal with BermanBraun, NBC has contracted to air two, if not three, hours of primetime programming in a single block supplied by executive producer Thom Beers’ Original Prods. The deal calls for a total of thirty hours of programming, or three, 10-episode, documentary style reality series. Ownership of the shows will be split with NBC, and the network will keep the domestic rights, while the producers retain international rights. Both shows in the 2-hour block will have a ratings floor, and if the show dips below the floor, it can be replaced by another Beers program. However, the deals does not allow NBC to split up the block; or if it does split the block, producers have the option of moving the shows to another network. The likely timing of this deal won’t help NBC during the current WGA strike, as these shows won’t be ready for air until some where around 3rd qtr 2008. Beers current and previous shows include Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers, Monster House and Monster Garage. November 2007 Sweep results for MNT: 11/1-11/28/07 NBC Universal completed its purchase of Sparrowhawk Holdings from Providence Equity Partners, 3i and management shareholders which includes international pay TV channels and the non-U.S. Hallmark Channels. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. CBS Corporation finalized the sale of its radio stations in four markets to Entercom Communications Corp. for $262 million in cash. As previously announced in May 2006, CBS publicized its intention to sell its radio stations in ten smaller markets, and this sale to Entercom has completed CBS’ goal. Jonathan Spaet joined Time Warner Cable Media Sales New York City as VP/GM. Prior to his new appointment Jonathan worked in the Time Warner corporate office for three years in national sales. Well, done Jonathan! NBC elevated Doug Vaughan to SVP/Special Programs and Alternative Development, NBC Entertainment and Meredith Ahr to VP/Alternative Programming, Development and Specials, NBC Entertainment. Doug, while based in New York, will lead many of NBC’s specials and reality series such as Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and more. Furthermore, he will analyze the network’s reality program pitches and ideas coming from the East Coast. Meredith will continue to develop new alternative series from launch to finale and she will also evaluate trends happening overseas. Currently she is working on the upcoming series The Baby Borrowers, The Celebrity Apprentice and American Gladiators.
