Oxygen revealed the premiere date of its new competition show The Face will be February 12 at 9p. Produced by Shine America, the seven-episode series is hosted by world-famous photographer and personality Nigel Barker and features Naomi Campbell, Karolina Kurkova and Coco Rocha as supermodel coaches. The competition will find the newest face of ULTA Beauty. Oxygen will also air the one-hour kick-off special, THE FACE: The Fight to Make the Final 12 on February 5 at 9p.
Kicking off on New Year’s is TLC’s new four-part series Totally T-Boz, highlighting the life and journey of Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins as she moves to Los Angles with family in friends to reinvent her music career. The series will air on Tuesdays at 8p beginning January 1. Totally T-Boz is produced by John Doe Media for TLC.
A fifth and final season of Merlin begins on Syfy January 4 at 10p with 13 all-new episodes. As this fifth season opens, Camelot is at the height of its golden age though the forces of darkness are gathering. Merlin is produced by Shine TV Ltd and BBC Wales and is distributed by FremantleMedia Enterprises.
On Thursdays beginning February 14 at 630p, AMC will air repeat episodes of The Walking Dead in black and white. The 90-minute premiere and the one-hour subsequent black/white episodes will be the lead-ins to the second season premiere of the docu-series Comic Book Men at 9p, the premiere of Freakshow at 930p and the taxidermy competition series bow of Immortalized at 10p. The premiere to the new episodes will be February 10 at 9p.
GAC, owned by Scripps Networks Interactive has a series of three new image commercials produced by Impossible TV featuring actor and country artist, John Corbett. The spots tell the network’s brand story highlighting a different scenario that relates what it means to “live” country beyond the music. The image campaign is currently airing across the Scripps roster of networks including HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network, Cooking Channel and Travel Channel.
Last Wednesday’s 12-12-12 concert at Madison Square Garden to aid the victims of Hurricane Sandy sported multiple viewing outlets worldwide including online properties, radio stations, television networks, satellite services and cable operators. The concert, presented by Chase, was seen in the US on 38 television channels. Across the 15 national networks measured by Nielsen, the concert tallied 36.4 million total viewers and 25.8 million households, reaching almost 1 in 4 households. The average Live + same day viewership on the 15 measured networks was 5.192 million over the 5+ hour event. An additional Live + same day 698,000 viewers tuned in across the six local networks that carried the event in the New York DMA.
The hidden-camera prank series Impractical Jokers on truTV premiered a second season Thursday night that attracted 1.7 million total viewers at 10p as well as 1.1 million among A18-49. The show’s 1030p episode did even better, attracting 1.9 million total viewers and 1.2 million with A18-49.
Halle Anne Root, age 5 of Milford CT, daughter to Marilee and Gary Root, granddaughter to Cynthia Turner and grand-niece to John Cox, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, December 8, 2012 and was laid to rest last Friday. Halle is additionally survived by her brother Tyler Root along with several loving aunts, uncles, great-grandparents and cousins. Five years ago, the Cynopsis Foundation was set up in celebration of Halle’s birth. This foundation has now been renamed Halle’s Hope and continues to raise funds for the betterment of children, in honor of Halle’s life, dreams and hopes. Ovation, the network devoted to the arts and artistic expression has secured distribution with RCN Boston which will expand the network’s reach in that market. The deal has RCN Boston launching Ovation’s standard-def and hi-def channels and its VOD service this Thursday, December 20.
BBC America and BBC World News has expanded their distribution agreement with Time Warner Cable systems involving BBC’s 24-hour global TV news channel BBC World News in the US and increased distribution for BBC America. BBC World News will be included as part of the digital basic package in most TWC systems before the end of this month. Additionally, BBC World News will see increased distribution in several cities by the end of year in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, San Francisco and Seattle. In 2012 alone, the expanded relationship with TWC has allowed BBC World News to grow by 10 million more homes. In total, BBC World News reaches 25 million full time homes in the US following these new TWC launches.
CNN Airport Network, which originally launched in 1991, is now available in 50 major airports across the US and reaches an audience of more than 263 million passengers each year after forging its most recent carriage deal with the Spokane International Airport in Washington. CNN Airport Network further has renewed contracts for continued service in three major cities including the Memphis International Airport, Miami International Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
Late last week, FOX’s The X Factor judge L.A. Reid revealed he will not return to the show next year. Reid said he has “a company to run that I’ve kind of neglected and it saddens me a little bit, but only a little bit.” Reid is Chairman/CEO of Epic Records. Reid will finish up season two which airs its season finales this week, part 1 Wednesday and part two on Thursday.
ABC handed a script commitment to a sitcom based on the home life of Justin Bieber. The single-camera comedy was first bandied about in the 2011 development cycle as a multi-camera project. The untitled project is described as a family show inspired by Bieber’s unconventional upbringing as he was raised by his mother and grandparents. The project is from ABC Studios and Bieber and his manager, Scooter Braun will serve as executive producers. Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi are on board to write the script.
A 1980s single-camera comedy titled How the F am I Normal from Adam F. Goldberg (Breaking In) was ordered to pilot by ABC. The project is described as a dysfunctional Wonder Years set in the 1980s and is inspired by Goldberg’s own childhood. Goldberg will pen the script and be an EP in addition to Happy Madison’s Doug Robinson and Breaking In’s Seth Gordon who will also direct. This same project was also set up at FOX in August 2011 when the network renewed Breaking In for a shortened second season but ended up at ABC with a pilot production commitment in September.
AMC ordered to series the pilot, Low Winter Sun a co-production between Endemol Studios and AMC Studio. The project is a contemporary story of murder, deception, revenge and corruption in a world where lines between cops and criminals is blurred. The series is set in Detroit and is based on the 2006 two-part British miniseries of the same name written by Simon Donald and produced by Tiger Aspect Productions (an Endemol Company). For the new version, Chris Mundy (Criminal Minds, Cold Case) will write and serve as EP and showrunner on the project. Jeremy Gold, head of creative affairs for Endemol Studios will oversee the project with Greg Brenman, head of drama for Tiger Aspect. Mark Strong stars in Low Winter Sun along with co-star Lennie James. The first season will have ten, one-hour episodes. AMC’s pilot, the Untitled LaGravenese & Goldwyn Project will continue to remain in consideration for a potential series pickup in 2013.
HBO handed a pilot order to People in New Jersey, a half-hour comedy about an adult brother and sister living in New Jersey who ponder life’s big and small questions as they struggle to get through each day. Bruce Eric Kaplan, co-EP on Girls will write the script and serve as EP along with writer-director Jason Reitman (Up in the Air, Juno) who will direct the pilot. Lorne Michaels (SNL) will also be an executive producer along with Helen Estabrook, head/development at Reitman’s Right of Way Films and 30 Rock’s Andrew Singer.
In other HBO production news, the premium cable network also ordered to pilot a comedy about three gay friends living in San Francisco. The untitled project is from David Marshall Grant (Brothers and Sisters) and Sarah Condon (Bored to Death) and is about the 30-something threesome who are dealing with life’s challenges and the modern gay experience. Michael Lannan is set to write the script with Grant supervising. Andrew Haigh will oversee the pilot which is based on Lannan’s feature script Lorimer.
Production has wrapped on TLC’s Welcome to Myrtle Manor, a new ten-episode series set in a trailer park in Myrtle Beach. The one-hour episodes follow the daily happenings of the residents in this tight-knit community. The series is produced by The Weinstein Company and Jupiter Entertainment for TLC and is set to premiere in early 2013.
Universal Cable Productions has signed creators, EPs and writing partners Matt Corman and Chris Ord, behind USA Network’s Covert Affairs, to their first-ever overall deal. The duo will continue to be the creative team on Covert Affairs which stars Piper Perabo. Corman and Ord will additionally develop series for both cable and broadcast networks working closely with UCP’s development team comprised of SVPs/Development and Current Programming, Richard Rothstein and Maira Suro and VP Tom Lieber.
Beth Grant was promoted to series regular on FOX’s The Mindy Project. She will go from guest star to series regular in her role as Beverly, a callous and unmotivated woman with a potential good heart buried somewhere deep.
Scripps Networks International reports its Fine Living lifestyle channel will launch January 1, 2013 on DTH platform OSN. The channel will be available in all 26 OSN territories throughout the Middle East region. Fine Living is offered in English with Arabic subtitles.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: CBS ranked #1 Thursday by delivering a 3.4/9 A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS’ comedies The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men did best at an average of 4.8/15 and FOX’s The X Factor came next posting half as much at 2.4/7. During the 9p hour, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and CBS’ Person of Interest tied for #1 at 2.9/8 each and FOX’s Glee came in third place at 2.0/5.
