Cyn opsis: Kids!

12/11/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, December 11, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Paramount Home Entertainment, Toonz Animation India and Commotion Pictures have partnered to produce the animated fantasy movie Dragonlance, which is based on Wizards of the Coast‘s Dungeons and Dragons property. The movie will be released theatrically in India by Toonz in spring 2007, while Paramount Home Entertainment will release the movie on DVD in the US and internationally, outside of Asia, in fall 2007.  Will Meugniot will direct the movie from a George Strayton screenplay, which is adapted from Dragons of Autumn Twilight, the first book in the Dragonlance Chronicles.  The authors of Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman were also part of the writing process. The voice cast for Dragonlance includes Keifer Sutherland, Lucy Lawless, Michael Rosenbaum and Michelle Trachtenberg.  Wizards of the Coast is a unit of Hasbro.

Joining the cast of the upcoming Fox animated TV series Two Dreadful Children, are Caroline Rhea and Sam Huntington, per the Hollywood Reporter.  Other members of the voice over cast include Chris Kattan, Meredith Roberts and French Stewart.

Who will play the green one in DreamWorks Animation’s Broadway production of Shrek: The Musical?  Candidates include actors Kevin Chamberlain and Dan Fogler, according to the New York Post, which sited theater sources.  Heading up the Shrek: The Musical production will be Sam Mendes, head of DreamWorks theater unit, and Jeffrey Katzenberg, Co-Founder, DreamWorks, with Jason Moore set to direct. Currently scheduled to open on Broadway in 2008, a reading of Shrek: The Musical is still slated for February 23, 2007.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Entertainment Rights has inked several deals for some of its shows:

  • ER has acquired the distribution rights for Finley the Fire Engine, a new animated TV series, from RHI International Distribution.  Under the deal ER has holds the worldwide TV, home entertainment and licensing and merchandising rights, outside the US, India and France, to 78 eleven minute episodes of the series.
  • ER is well into negotiating deals with Spain’s TVE and Italy’s Rai Sat, for the acquisition of 65 episodes of the Basil Brush Show.
  • ER has signed a pact with Player X Ltd, a UK wireless content publisher and distributor.  Under the terms of the deal Player X has picked up the rights to She-Ra, Princes of Power and Bravestarr short-form content to be used as mobile video clips, ring tones and wallpaper.
  • Brand Elite has been appointed as the licensing agent to represent Postman Pat in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Taffy Entertainment has sold Marvel’s Fantastic Four to Canada’s YTV and Vrak TV, Cartoon Network Germany, and Spain’s TV Catalunya and ETB. Additional deals for the series include those with Belgium’s Club RTL, the Middle East’s MBC, Singapore’s TV12, Malaysia’s NTV 7, and Greece’s Alter Channel.

The Chinese government has banned new foreign investment in TV and film companies. Instead, the State Administration of Radio, Film & Television stated, international media companies interested in starting new projects in the country need to work with local partners on individual initiatives. A previous 2004 ruling allowed a minority stake in or forming joint ventures with local production companies.

MARKETING/LICENSING

New Line Cinema has launched the official website for the live-action feature film The Golden Compass ( www.goldencompassmovie.com), a year out from the worldwide release of the picture.  The website features exclusive information about the cast and the making of the movie, as well as images from the set and production concept art that also offers a look at portions of scenes from the movie.  Additionally, fans can unlock hidden content on the website by using the Alethiometer, a virtual version of the device used in the movie to find truth.  The website content is available in 11 languages. The Golden Compass is the first book in author Philip Pullman’s multilayered trilogy, His Dark Materials.

In movie trailer news …

  • A trailer for DreamWorks’ movie Shrek the Third will run ahead of the Fox movie Eragon in some theaters, opening this Friday, according to website Coming Soon.  Shrek the Third will be released May 18, 2007.  The trailer for Fox’s Live Free or Die Hard, of the Die Hard movie franchise, will also run ahead of Eragon in some theaters.
  • The trailer for the fourth Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, this one a CG animated picture, has been released by Warner Bros. at MTV.com.  The movie is scheduled for release on March 23, 2007.

If you live with a teenager you might already have observed some of these instant messaging behaviors, including if you have tried to send your teen an email.   Teens are spending more time sending/reading instant messages then they do emails, according to a new AP-AOL Instant Messaging Trends Survey.  The survey, which looked at IM habits of 1,513 IM users (1,013 adults 19+ and 500 Teens 13-18), found that there is a gap between the two groups: 72% of teens that use IM report sending more IMs than emails, while 26% of adults said they do the same.  Teens are using IMing for sharing photos (56%), sharing music/video files including ringtones (33%), while adults are more likely than teens to take part in audio chats and video IM with friends.  Other findings from the survey:

  • About 30% of teens can’t imagine life without IM, moreso teen girls than boys (36% vs. 23%); and 43% of teens living in the Northeast are more attached to IM than are their peers in other parts of the country.  Only approx 17% of adults say they couldn’t live without IM
  • Adults and teens aren’t far about when it comes to multitasking online while IM-ing.  63% of teens surveyed say they do homework and research online, while 53% adults are searching the web
  • 53% of teens report using IM to get homework help, though only 9% have used IM to speak with a teacher or tutor.  (Well, duh!)
  • 43% of teens and adults younger than 30 years are most likely to sign on to IM several times a day.  Meanwhile, 40% of young adults 19-26 years old report sending 26 or more IMs a day, significantly more than their older counterparts.
  • 39% of teens have sent IMs to people they have not met in person.
