Cynopsis

12/10/07

Good Morning.  It’s Monday, December 10, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Roger King, CEO of CBS Television Distribution and Chairman of King World, and one of the biggest personalities in the television syndication business, died Saturday after suffering a stroke at his home in Boca Raton, FL. He was 63. Over the last 30 years, Roger built his family business, King World into a production and syndication empire.  Roger’s King World, originally founded by his father Charles King in 1964, are syndicators of Oprah, Dr. Phil, Rachael Ray, Inside Edition, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, and this fall The Doctors, merged with CBS in 2000.  Roger was inducted into the NAB Hall of Fame in 2004.  He is survived by his wife, Raemali, and three daughters.

Speaking from experience, for a television programmer, there was never anything as memorable as a personal phone call from Roger King – both the most frightening moment and the most exhilarating – who was probably calling to find out why I wasn’t clearing one of his shows. Roger was a legend in our business – there will never be another.

~ MORE STUFF ~

Talks between the WGA and AMPTP stalled again Friday after three days of negotiating last week. A proposal was delivered by the AMPTP and which has now been rejected by the WGA; similarly the AMPTP rejected the proposal brought to the table by the WGA. Topics remaining in contention include online streaming, fixed residuals and original content used in new media among other issues.

Here is the statement from WGA, provided here in part: :

“AMPTP came back to us with a proposal that included a total rejection of our proposal on internet streaming of December 3. They are holding to their offer of a $250 fixed residual for unlimited one year streaming after a six-week window of free use. They still insist on the DVD rate for internet downloads. They refuse to cover original material made for new media. This offer was accompanied by an ultimatum: the AMPTP demands we give up several of our proposals, including Fair Market Value (our protection against vertical integration and self dealing), animation, reality, and, most crucially, any proposal that uses distributor’s gross as a basis for residuals. This would require us to concede most of our internet proposal as a precondition for continued bargaining. The AMPTP insists we let them do to the internet what they did to home video.”

And, in part, the statement from AMPTP:

“We’re disappointed to report that talks between the AMPTP and WGA have broken down yet again. Quite frankly, we’re puzzled and disheartened by an ongoing WGA negotiating strategy that seems designed to delay or derail talks rather than facilitate an end to this strike. Their Quixotic pursuit of radical demands led them to begin this strike, and now has caused this breakdown in negotiations. We hope that the WGA will come back to this table with a rational plan that can lead us to a fair and equitable resolution to a strike that is causing so much distress for so many people in our industry and community.”

IFC acquired three new anime series from FUNimation Entertainment, the Japanese animation distributor, according to Broadcasting & Cable. The shows joining the network’s schedule include:

  • Witchblade – 24 episodes debut in January, an adaptation of a comic book about a woman taking on a destructive force
  • Speed Grapher – 24 episodes begin next March, about a tabloid photographer snapping shots of a futuristic Tokyo where only the rich and evil rule
  • Hell Girl – will premiere sometime in 2008, about a girl who surfs online looking for postings from people who want to send their enemies to hell.

Cold Case has been upped for two more years in syndication, distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, who has cleared the show thru 2011 on the CBS stations in 16 markets, reports THR. CBS Clearances include New York, LA, Chicago, Philly, San Francisco, Dallas, Boston, Detroit, Seattle and Tampa.

Correction: NBC’s Law & Order will premiere in a two-hour episode January 2 from 9-11p.

MTV Networks sold Tempo, the 24-hour pan-Caribbean cable television network, to a group of investors led by Frederick A. Morton, Jr., who founded the network while employed at MTV Networks. The deal was final on November 8, 2007 and specific terms were not disclosed. Tempo was launched by MTV Networks in November 2005 and currently is distributed in 25 islands reaching approximately 400,000 households and 1.6 million viewers.

Macrovision Corporation and Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. both signed an agreement allowing Macrovision to purchase Gemstar-TV Guide in a cash and stock deal. The value of the transaction is approximately $2.8 billion. Before it’s complete, the deal must go through normal closing conditions and receive voting approval by two-thirds of the outstanding shares of Gemstar-TV Guide common stock and a majority of the shares of the Macrovision common stock. Once the transaction is final, Fred Amoroso will be President/CEO and James Budge will be CFO of the combined company. Both Gemstar-TV Guide’s CEO Rich Battista and CFO Bedi Singh will depart the company.

Gospel Music Channel (GMC) gained new distribution and has launched on Bresnan Communications in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming; Charter Communications’ Central and West Divisions; Comcast Digital Cable in the New Jersey region; Cox Communications in the Pensacola region; and Time Warner Cable in the Northeast Ohio Division, Cleveland/Akron and Austin/Waco/Killeen, TX.  The added distribution brings GMC coverage to 22+ million homes.

Retro Television Network (RTN), owned and distributed by Equity Media Holdings Corporation will launch next year in Charlotte on a digital stream of WMYT, the MyNetworkTV affiliate owned by Capitol Broadcasting Company.
