Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Monday, August 4, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing, presented for the first time with graphic elements!  Let us know what you think!

Cartoon Network and Warner Premiere begin production on Scooby-Doo: In The Beginning, a new mixed live-action/CG animated movie prequel today in Vancouver, British Columbia.  The original movie, which is set prior to the 2002 and 2004 live-action Scooby-Doo movies, will bow on the network in fall 2009 to coincide with the DVD release of the movie.  Directed by Brian Levant from a script by the Altiere Brothers, the movie stars Rob Amell (Life With Derek, Cheaper by the Dozen 2) as Freddy and newcomer Kaitlyn Melton as Daphne, Hayley Alcroft as Velma and Nick Palatas as Shaggy, with Frank Welker providing the voice of Scooby-Doo (he was the voice of Freddy in the original Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? Series).  Animation Picture Company will animate Scooby-Doo.


Playhouse Disney UK picks up the new preschool animated series Claude (52×10).  Produced by UK-based Dot To Dot and Red and Blue Productions, Claude follows a young polar bear who makes the big move from his home in the Artic to the big city.  Animated by Ireland by Dinamo Productions, Claude is based on the books by illustrator David Wojtowycz.  Germany’s ZDF has also acquired the series, with the worldwide distribution rights being handled by ZDF Enterprises.  Claude is produced with support from the Media Program and the Welsh IP Fund.  The series will be officially launched at MIPCOM this fall.

Two new kid-targeted series join V-me’s preschool programming lineup beginning today, August 4, 2008:

  • Cotoons (26×7), a mixed live-action/animated series produced by Cyber Group Animation.   The series, which airs daily at 1p, revolves around a happy-go-lucky group of curious creators that find solutions to every situation they find themselves in.
  • Bruno and the Banana Bunch (26×11) is a flash animated series that follows Bruno a little monkey with a big sense of fun, described as an age appropriate learning partners for preschoolers.  Bruno and his pals explore everything from colors to numbers, shapes and sizes as they learn life lessons.  Cuppa Coffee Studios is distributing this series.

It’s a new bouncing carriage deal for BabyFirst with Asia’s SingTel.  Under the deal BabyFirst TV launches in Singapore on SingTel’s digital pay TV service mio TV (channel 25).  BabyFirst produces 500 hours of developmental programming content aimed at babies and their families.

Koch Vision is set to release Shelley Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theatre (26 episodes) as a seven-disc DVD set this September 7, 2008.  The series was originally broadcast on Showtime.  The DVD collection will include a “lost episode” of the series as well as a 112-page illustrated storybook, and a 3-in-1 card game among other features.

BBC Worldwide (BBCWW) has tapped Neil Ross Russell as its new Managing Director/Children’s, where he will oversee BBCWW’s youth-programming including preschool, kids and teens.  Neil takes up his new role at the company on August 11, 2008 and will reporter to Phippen, MD/BBC Magazines.  He replaces outgoing Director Gill Pritchard, who joins C4 this September.  Currently a consultant for BBCWW Channels, Neil recently served as Business Development Director/Sparrowhawk Media (now a unit of NBC Universal), where he was key in the creation of the digital kid’s channel KidsCo, a joint venture of Sparrowhawk, DIC Entertainment and Nelvana.

Additionally, BBCWW has named Helen Kellie as its first Director/Marketing, reporting to CEO, John Smith.  Working across all BBCWW lines of business, Kellie will build its marketing and audience research efforts and will prioritize BBCWW’s marketing and spending around the world.  Most recently, Kellie toiled for the BBC Director/Marketing, Communications and Audiences, Vision.
