Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Monday, August 30, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 3 jumped the $1 billion mark at worldwide box office on Friday.  In addition to being the world’s biggest animated release ever, Toy Story 3 also joins Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland as Disney’s second $1 billion movie this year, making it the first studio ever to have two movies reach $1+ billion in a single year.  Toy Story 3 is the first animated movie to hit this milestone.  Both Toy Story 3 and Alice in Wonderland were 3D movie releases, which also means they had higher ticket prices.  Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) was Disney’s first feature film to cross the $1 billion mark.


Cartoon Network will premiere Sym-Bionic Titan, a new original animated series from creator director Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack) on Friday, September 17 at 8p.  Sym-Bionic Titan revolves around three alien teens, a princess, a warrior and a robot, which crash-land on Earth while attempting to escape the General who has taken over their planet.  In their new Earth home, in Illinois, the three teens must protect the princess from the evil General, save the planet and make their way through high school.  Available now at ( ), fans can play Teenage Warriors, a new free game based on the series.

Selena Gomez & The Scene‘s new music video, A Year Without Rain, from their upcoming eponymous album, will make its world premiere on Disney Channel this Friday, September 3 at 10:15p, following the network’s premiere of Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam and preview for its new animated series Fish Hooks.  The single is set to debut on Radio Disney and as a digital single and video the same day.  Hollywood Records will release A Year Without Rain album on Tuesday, September 21.

The third season of Scholastic Media’s animated series WordGirl will debut on PBS Kids Go! beginning September 13, 2010 (check local listings).  Produced by Scholastic’s animation studio Soup2Nuts, features a voiceover cast including new and returning cast members Kristen Schaal (Toy Story 3, The Flight of the Conchords, Modern Family), John Henson (Wipe Out), Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development, The Hangover 2), Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), John C. McGinley (Scrubs), and Dannah Phirman (MadTV) as WordGirl, Chris Parnell (SNL, 30 Rock) as the Narrator, as well as Maria Bamford (Kick Buttowski) as Mrs. Botsford, among others.

Penguin Books has published the new sci-fi adventure title I Am Number Four simultaneously in two editions in the UK, one for adults from the Michael Joseph imprint, and the other for young adults on the Razorbill imprint. HarperCollins Children’s Books holds the North American rights to the book.  I Am Number Four is the first book in author Pittacus Lore’s (believed to the pen name of authors James Frey and Jobie Hughes) six book Lorien Legacies.  Steven Spielberg acquired the feature film rights for I Am Number Four for DreamWorks.  Set for release on February 18, 2011, the I Am Number Four movie is directed by DJ Caruso and produced by Michael Bay.

Nelvana Enterprises and Vivendi Entertainment ink a home entertainment and VOD license deal for the new mixed 2D and CGI animated series Beyblade: Metal Fusion in North America.  Under the deal content will include the first 51 episodes in 7 DVD releases with Volume 1 set to be available at retail from November 9, 2010, in English, French and Spanish across North America.  From Nelvana and d-rights, Beyblade: Metal Fusion is already airing on YTV (Canada) and Cartoon Network US, and is set to debut in the UK and Europe next year.  Tomy Company, which re-launched the Beyblade tops two years ago, has named Hasbro as the master toy license for most markets outside of Asia.

Paramount Licensing signs a raft of licensees for the new animated action/adventure movie Rango, which stars Johnny Depp and is directed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) and set for a March 4, 2011 release.  The cast also stars Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Harry Dean Stanton, Ned Beatty, and Ray Winstone.  Licensee partners include: American Greetings (greeting cards); Artbox (trading cards); Eaglemoss (mini-magazine and figurine collection); Fortune Fashions (men/women/boys/girls tees, knit tops and fleece); Hot Toys (collectible figures); Inkology (school supplies); Palace Press (art book); Rubie’s Costume Co. (costumes); Scorpio Posters (posters); Sterling Publishing (children’s book formats); The Canadian Group (puzzles, games, magnetic colorform product, tattoos).
