Cynopsis: Kids!
08/02/10

Good morning. It’s Monday, August 2, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

It’s a deal.  Disney has sold Miramax Films to Filmyard Holdings for $660+ million.  Filmyard partners include businessmen Ron Tutor, Tom Barrack, Colony Capital among others.  Subject to regulatory approvals, the deal is on track to close between September 10 and the end of the 2010.  The sale of Miramax includes rights to a library of 700+ movies, which includes kid/family-targeted movies.  Also included under the deal are non-movie assets, such as the “Miramax” name, select books, and development projects among other things.  No word yet about who will be brought on to lead the company and its creative efforts.  Speaking about the sale, Disney President and CEO Robert Iger said, while the company is proud of Miramax’s accomplishment, Disney’s immediate strategy is focused on developing movies under its Disney, Pixar and Marvel brands.

Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group launches Virgin Produced, a new film and TV development, packaging and production company, which has simultaneous to its founding entered into a joint venture with Relativity Media‘s Rogue Pictures to develop, produce and market movies.  Based in LA, Virgin Produced will be helmed by Jason Felts and Justin Berfield, both formerly producers of J2TV/J2 Pictures, serving as CEO and Chief Creative Officer, respectively.  In addition to developing and producing original movie projects, Virgin plans to co-produce two to three films a year with Relativity/Rogue.  The first film is an untitled Peter Farrelly project.

MORE KIDS STUFF

CBBC orders a second season of the kid-targeted documentary series My Life for CBBC and BBC Two.  Comprised of five new single topic films, the new season will looks a new group of UK kids and their unique situations and challenges.  The five films include:

  • Ballet Boys – the episode follows three brothers from a working class family in Liverpool that studying to be ballet dancers.  Produced by indie production company Real Life,
  • Stammer School – looks at kids enrolled at the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering Children and their speech and language therapy and challenges.  The film is produced by Dene Films.
  • Boy Racers – the episode follows a 15-year-old go-karter working to become the British and world champ.  Boy Racers is an in-house CBBC production.
  • Struggling to Stay Awake – what is life like for kids battling Narcolepsy?  Produced by Blakeway North.
  • Toy Soldiers – the episode explores how life has changed for kids from various backgrounds that have a parent in the armed forces.  The film is from Walsh Bros.

Astral’s Family Channel (Canada) fall lineup includes a collection of new and returning live action and animated series featuring original Canadian series as well as programs from Disney Channel, Disney XD and Playhouse Disney. New series premiering this fall include on Family Channel:

  • Connor Undercover – the live action tween series bows September 17 at 9:30p, and will then air regularly Friday nights at 9:30p.  The show stars Max Morrow, Lola Tash and Jordan Francis.
  • Fish Hooks – the Disney animated series sneak peeks September 3 at 9:30p, and will then air weekends from September 25 at 8a.  Set inside a fish tank, Fish Hooks features the voices of Kyle Massey (Corey in the House) and Chelsea Staub (Jonas)
  • Pair of Kings – Disney XD’s new live-action series premieres September 17 at 5:30p with a two-parter and will then air weekends from September 25 at 11a.  Starring Mitchel Musso (Hannah Montana) and Doc Shaw (The Suite Life on Deck), the story revolves around fraternal twin brothers that discover they are royalty.
  • Shake it Up! – a live-action series also from Disney Channel about best friends and dance student debuts this fall (date TBA).
  • Majority Rules – launches September 6 at 9p, the live-action series will air regularly Mondays-Thursdays at 9p.

New episodes of returning series include:

  • The Suite Life on Deck – the third season of Disney Channel’s series debuts September 6 at 6p, with new episodes then airing Fridays from September 10 at 6p.
  • Special Agent Oso – the second season of Playhouse Disney’s interactive series bow September 17 at 9:37a, and will continue to air Fridays at the same time.  The new season guest stars include Mel Brooks, Brad Garret and Lou Holtz (retired football coach).
  • The Secret World of Benjamin Bear – the fourth season begins September 24 at 5:20a, and will then air regularly Fridays at 5:20a.

Boomerang ( www.boomerang.cartoonnetwork.com ) will feature Muttley, Dick Dastardly’s devious, snickering mutt from Hannah-Barbera’s animated series Wacky Races (1968-70) and Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines (1969-71), during Boomeroyalty each weekend (2-4p) this month beginning August 7.

Canada’s Teletoon and Fresh TV partner with zinc Roe, a creator of kid/tween-targeted websites/ games/activities, to launch a new member-based Canadian site for the animated property Total Drama.  Just as the animated series is a parody of reality TV series, TotalDramaOnline.com ( www.totaldramaonline.com), and the French version DefisExtremes.com ( www.defisextremes.com ), is a parody of reality TV websites – with a competitive element.  Site members can compete for badges, points and “high score” status, among other things yet to be unveiled.  The free membership also allows kids to make avatars, create songs, vote in polls and play games and earn site award points.  The new season of the series, Total Drama World Tour debuts on Teletoon in both English and French this September 9 at 8p.  These Total Drama websites are accessible only in Canada.

MARKETING/LICENSING

NCircle Entertainment is set to launch the DVD line this fall for the new preschool Dr. Seuss series, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!  Featuring Martin Short as the voice of The Cat, the new animated series will launch on PBS Kids on September 6, followed the next day by the release of the first DVD titled Wings and Things.  Produced by Portfolio Entertainment in association with Random House, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That focuses on introducing preschoolers to core science concepts and vocabulary in an a Dr. Seussian way.

Coolabi expands the Scarlett & Crimson tween/teen girl cosmetic line, designed exclusively for the UK retailer Boots, for holiday 2010 to include nine items, up seven from holiday 2009.  Developed by Ruby Hammer and Millie Kendall, and designed and manufactured by SLG Beauty, the line includes My Beauty Collective cosmetics palette, Totally Charmed nail polish collection, and Double Trouble mascara and lip gloss duos.  Additional products in development in the US and UK include those in categories such as apparel, perfume, bath and body, gifts and accessories, and stationery.
