Fox News Channel journalists Steve Centanni and Olaf Wiig were both released yesterday after nearly two weeks in captivity. Exactly how or why they were released has not been made clear.  What we do know is they were dropped off at a hotel in Gaza, in seemingly good health and spirits.

Former CBS Television Network executive Tony Malara passed away last Thursday in Syracuse, NY, of complications from acute myeloid leukemia. He was 69 years old. After 21 years at WWNY/Watertown, Tony joined CBS in 1978 as VP of Station Services, Affiliate Relations. He advanced to VP Affiliate Relations in 1980, later moving to VP/GM and ultimately President, CBS Television Network Division. In 1988, he was appointed President of CBS Affiliate Relations. Tony retired from the network in 1995 and created the consulting firm TCM Media Associates, LLC. He started Malara Broadcasting Group in 1996, where he was CEO. Active in many professional and civic organizations, Tony served as President of the New York State Broadcasters Association in 1978, as well as on the Advisory Board at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications.     

It’s premiere week at MTV next week, with the debuts of four new series and five returning ones:

The Global Language Monitor released its annual survey on words that derived from television and have been added to the lay person’s vernacular. Among the top buzz words of 2006 – Truthiness, meaning “truth unencumbered by facts” and Wikireality, meaning “reality as defined by a majority vote,” both from The Colbert Report; and Mr. McDreamy from Grey’s Anatomy, referring to Patrick Dempsey’s role.

* PRODUCTION / DEVELOPMENT / CASTING *

Discovery has ordered a half dozen episodes of two new series: Big Machines will take an up close and personal look at both giant-sized machines and the folks who run them; and Risk Factor weighs in on the world’s most dangerous jobs. Both series are produced by Craig Piligian. Both shows will also be shot in hi-def format, making them available to the Discovery HD Theatre.

HBO has ordered a comedy project called Whitney, which focuses on four women who live, work and love in Miami. The pilot will be written by Lisa Schraeger, who will also exec produce together with Alex Gansa and Larry Kennar.

Two pilots ordered by LifetimeArmy Wives and Side Order of Life.  Army Wives is from Mark Gordon Co and is described as Desperate Housewives in khaki. The story begins with a single mother who marries a soldier and moves her young brood to the army base housing, meeting up with other wives and mothers.  The latter project, Side Order of Life, from Warner Bros. Television and Warner Horizon TV,  is about a magazine photographer who is about to be married, and then learns her best friend has been diagnosed with cancer.  She then takes time to re-evaluate her life.

Leslie Nielsen has been cast in a pilot project called Lipshitz Saves the World, for NBC. From NBC Univeral Network TV, the project is about a teenager who discovers he is the chosen one to save the world, but he’s going to need Leslie Nielsen’s character’s help.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

Cox Media has promoted Charlie Mirkle to Local Sales Manager, where he oversees an eight-person sales team, hiring, training and evaluating account executives, as well as developing and achieving the company’s sales goals.
 
Allison Johnston is the new Promotions Manager at Channel M, the global non-traditional media company and provider of retail marketing services.

* RATINGS *

Thursday – A18-49 Analysis:  CBS came out on top Thursday night to win with 3.1/9 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. CBS took control of the evening at 8p with Big Brother dominating at 3.0/10. At 9p, CBS with a CSI repeat won at 3.4/10, with ABC’s second rerun of Grey’s Anatomy for the night coming in second at 2.9/8. Without a Trace on CBS won in the final hour at 2.8/8, and the NFL Preseason game on FOX brought in a second place seat at 2.4/7 for the hour.
