Former CBS Television Network executive Tony Malara passed away last Thursday in Syracuse, NY, of complications from acute myeloid leukemia. He was 69 years old. After 21 years at WWNY/Watertown, Tony joined CBS in 1978 as VP of Station Services, Affiliate Relations. He advanced to VP Affiliate Relations in 1980, later moving to VP/GM and ultimately President, CBS Television Network Division. In 1988, he was appointed President of CBS Affiliate Relations. Tony retired from the network in 1995 and created the consulting firm TCM Media Associates, LLC. He started Malara Broadcasting Group in 1996, where he was CEO. Active in many professional and civic organizations, Tony served as President of the New York State Broadcasters Association in 1978, as well as on the Advisory Board at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Discovery has ordered a half dozen episodes of two new series: Big Machines will take an up close and personal look at both giant-sized machines and the folks who run them; and Risk Factor weighs in on the world’s most dangerous jobs. Both series are produced by Craig Piligian. Both shows will also be shot in hi-def format, making them available to the Discovery HD Theatre.

HBO has ordered a comedy project called Whitney, which focuses on four women who live, work and love in Miami. The pilot will be written by Lisa Schraeger, who will also exec produce together with Alex Gansa and Larry Kennar.

Two pilots ordered by LifetimeArmy Wives and Side Order of Life.  Army Wives is from Mark Gordon Co and is described as Desperate Housewives in khaki. Television and Warner Horizon TV,  is about a magazine photographer who is about to be married, and then learns her best friend has been diagnosed with cancer.  She then takes time to re-evaluate her life.

Leslie Nielsen has been cast in a pilot project called Lipshitz Saves the World, for NBC. From NBC Univeral Network TV, the project is about a teenager who discovers he is the chosen one to save the world, but he’s going to need Leslie Nielsen’s character’s help.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1917 – Ten suffragists are arrested when they picket the White House. Three years later, women are guaranteed the right to vote when Tennessee ratifies the Nineteenth Amendment, which is formally proclaimed adopted by Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby.  After more than 70 years of organizing by woman suffragists, Congress and the states agreed that gender, like race, could not bar a U.S. citizen from the franchise.
