Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08/27/12
Good morning. It’s Monday, August 27, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
YouTube isn’t the only digital media property with an Election Hub during the upcoming political party conventions. Microsoft is launching the “Election 2012 Hub on Xbox Live” today. Microsoft has teamed up with an array of organizations to provide users with live coverage of both conventions and the three scheduled presidential debates, as well as other political content and information throughout this coming election cycle. This includes partnerships with:
- NBC News, which will deliver daily content and political news and analysis to the Hub.
- National Journal and The Atlantic, through which all three will host town halls targeted to students and young voters at the Democratic and Republican national conventions.
- Face the Facts USA, an independently funded research initiated supported by The George Washington University that will deliver videos on major issues. These videos will be hosted by former CNN correspondent Frank Senso.
- Rock the Vote, which will offer local voter information, the ability to register to vote, and exclusive musical content that can be streamed directly on Xbox Live.
- YouGov, for daily polling.
Comcast has added three live Disney channels to Xfinity.com/TV. The result of a distribution pact signed this past January by the cable provider and The Walt Disney Company, which gave Comcast the go-ahead to offer Disney programming (ABC, ESPN, Disney) across multiple platforms, Xfinity TV customers will now be able to watch Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD live online.
More TV Everywhere: Time Warner Cable subscribers can now watch the Fox News Channel and the Fox Business Network live on iOS devices, says the cable provider. The streams are available on the Fox News iPhone, Fox News iPad, and Fox Business iPad apps. Of course, as is the case with any TV Everywhere offering from any pay-TV provider, viewers have to be existing subscribers of the channels if they want the digital access.
WIGS, the women-centric original programming channel on YouTube created by Jon Avnet and Rodrigo Garcia, continues its programming rollout with Rochelle, a new series starring Rosanna Arquette that debuts today. The series follows a woman played by Arquette who hires an escort to break her ex-husband’s heart. Written by Scott Turow and directed by Rose Troche (The L Word), the second and third episode of the three-part series will air on Wednesday and Friday of this week.
Live streaming content from the Shadow Conventions 2012, the Huffington Post Media Group‘s social/political programming initiative that is meant to serve as an alternative to the political party conventions, will also be available via the AOL On and HuffPost Live connected TV apps. Coverage begins tomorrow and will run through September 6. The goal of the Shadow Conventions is to highlight three issues that are largely ignored by both major parties, according to HuffPost. These issues, which are the War on Drugs, poverty and job creation, and the influence of money on politics, will take center stage each of the three days of each convention.
Mashable is premiering a new video/photo series today called A Day in the Life. Sponsored by Aloft, the show will follow seven “digeratis” during, as the title says, a day in their life. In total, four of the profiles will come in video form, while the other three via photos. Two photo-based ones have already been released, following Kellee Khalil and Zach Sims. Mashable says video subjects will include Scott Heiferman from Meetup, Ge Wang, and Felicia Day (The Guild).
Online programming network Revision3, which was recently purchased by Discovery Communications, is rolling out an update to its app for the iPad, and is now available on Barnes & Noble’s Nook tablet and Sony’s Google TV devices. The iPad update now offers support for AirPlay, which allows viewers to link their tablet to the Apple TV for multiscreen viewing. Revision3’s HTML5-based video player is also replacing its older Flash-based player on Firefox browsers. Revision3 says this means the HTML5 player is now available on all up-to-date browser and operating system combinations.
The richest company in the world is about to get richer. A jury has ruled in the Samsung vs. Apple patent case that Samsung infringed upon almost every Apple patent it was accused of (six out of seven to be exact), while denying Samsung’s claims that Apple did the same thing with some of its patents. This means Samsung has to pay Apple over $1 billion in damages, or, as it’ll undoubtedly do, appeal the case. “The lawsuits between Apple and Samsung were about much more than patents or money. They were about values,” Apple said in a statement. “We make these products to delight our customers, not for our competitors to flagrantly copy.” For its part, Samsung also released a statement, saying in part, “Today’s verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer. It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices.” And then later, “We will move immediately to file post-verdict motions to overturn this decision in this court and, if we are not successful, we will appeal this decision to the Court of Appeals.” See, this one isn’t over by a long shot.

With September right around the corner, it also means that it’s time for everyone to start talking about the upcoming holiday season, especially if you’re involved in e-commerce and m-commerce in any way. So to get a jump start on this news cycle, here’s some findings from a survey of over 2,200 Americans, 18 and older, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of API tech provider Apigee: 57% of mobile app users said they would consider purchasing holiday gifts on a mobile device. Among the top items, according to the respondents, are electronics (31%) and DVDs/Blu-ray discs (26%). When the study asked respondents to pinpoint the benefits of using a mobile device to buy gifts this holiday season, 50% cited the ability to browse deals wherever they are and 48% pointed to comparing prices inside a store. The ability to find a retail store (40% of respondents) and redeeming electronic coupons (38%) were seen as other benefits of using mobile device for holiday shopping.
Apple plans to introduce an “iPad mini” device in October, according to what sources tell AllThingsD. Most of the rumor mill had believed Apple would unveil such a device alongside the iPhone 5 at an event the company is holding in a couple of weeks. Based on this report, that no longer appears to be the case as AllThingsD’s sources indicate that Apple has scheduled a separate event for October, which will bring a smaller (and cheaper) tablet to the market.
Rick Rey has been promoted to VP/Original Programming and Development for Blip Studios, the original production arm of digital media company Blip.

He will oversee Onswipe’s publisher platform, business development, business operations, and strategy, and will work closely with sales, engineering, and product teams. He will be responsible for leading the monetization strategy for the company and its clients, which include both publishers and advertisers.
