08/25/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, August 25, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
NBC: Deal or No Deal at 8p

Democratic National Convention coverage begins tonight through Thursday – check listings for networks/times.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

According to Nielsen Media Research, the 16-day coverage (through August 23) of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games by NBC Universal reached 211 million viewers and has become the most viewed event in U.S. television history. This total viewer number surpasses the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games when 209 million viewers tuned in over 17 days. Updated numbers to include yesterday’s viewership, the final day of the Olympics, will be included in tomorrow’s edition.

Earlier than usual, both presidential campaigns of Senators Barack Obama and John McCain finalized dates for three upcoming presidential debates and one vice presidential debate. All debates will be 90-minutes in length and air in primetime starting at 9p. The dates and venues include:

  • The first presidential debate will be held at University of Mississippi and moderated by PBS’ Jim Lehrer on September 26.
  • The debate between the VPs will be at Washington University in St. Louis moderated by PBS’ Gwen Ifill on October 2.
  • The second presidential debate will be at Belmont University in Nashville and the town hall-style format will be moderated by NBC’s Tom Brokaw on October 7.
  • And, the final presidential debate will at Hofstra University in New York moderated by CBS’ Bob Schieffer on October 15.

The CW’s series debut of Stylista is now slated for October 22 at 9p, a week earlier than originally planned. This series, which is produced by 10 by 10 Entertainment, Inc. and Bankable Incorporated in association with Magic Molehill Productions, Inc., will follow eleven fashion assistants working for Elle’s Fashion News Director, Anne Slowey as they battle to be the best. After weekly eliminations, the final winner will receive a one-year stint on Elle magazine’s editorial staff, a paid lease on a Manhattan apartment and a clothing allowance at H&M all valued at $100,000.

ESPN and Major League Baseball Advanced Media formed a digital rights deal that will further enhance their current partnership through 2013. The deal includes rights for ESPN.com, ESPN360.com as well as ESPN’s mobile efforts including content on emerging platforms such as video games, interactive TV, portable devices such as iPods and syndication of ESPN-licensed content. The agreement also encompasses any new platforms ESPN may develop or form relationships with through the end of the deal.

Travel Channel Media picked up the exclusive U.S. cable rights to reality series The Amazing Race from CBS Television Distribution. The deal, with terms not disclosed, includes the most recent seasons of the show: 12 and 13 (now in production) plus Season 14 (based on production considerations). Episodes from Season 12 will air on the Travel Channel each Wednesday at 8p starting September 3.

Based on the ratings success of airing Michael Phelps’ gold medal wins at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, NBC made a pact with USA Swimming to broadcast the 2009 World and U.S. Championships in addition to the U.S. Championships in 2010 and 2011. NBC will air weekend coverage of the 2009 World Championships July 26-August 2, while Universal Sports will provide mid-week coverage.

BET’s season two finale of Baldwin Hills on August 19 at 10p averaged 1.6 million total viewers.

BET Networks will cover portions of the Democratic National Convention live starting tonight through Thursday. In addition, BET Networks’ Democratic Convention coverage will offer special news programming briefs, specials, PSAs during this week on BET and BET J as well as coverage online via BET On Blast and BET’s broadband channel.

The debut of Jacked: Auto Theft Task Force on A&E last Thursday at 10p averaged 1.2 million total viewers over two piggy-backed episodes.

Last Thursday evening, The Cynopsis Foundation Inc. held its second annual Charity Dinner and Auction fundraiser at New York City’s Chelsea Pier 60.  The evening demonstrated the importance of encouraging and enabling all children to dare to dream to become whatever they want to be and thanks to its Presenting Sponsor qubo, and Participating Sponsors A&E Television Network and Retirement Living TV, and guests from more than 40 industry organizations, the Foundation was able to raise more than $85,000, to be donated to this year’s recipient charities – Kids In Need and EarthEcho International.   After an incredible performance by Emmy and Grammy nominee pianist/composer Richard Freitas, attendees had the opportunity to bid on exclusive experiences such as a session with Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan and a private dinner with Philippe Cousteau.  Also on the auction block were very popular luxury trips to Myrtle Beach, provided by MyrtleBeachGolfTrips .com, and a trip to Bonaire in the Netherlands Antilles, a premier diving destination.  Thank you to all those who attended and/or donated – we hope to see you again next year!

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

SCI FI Channel authorized a two-hour film based on the television series Stargate Atlantis. The network will get the exclusive global television premiere and later the film will be released on DVD by MGM. The yet-to-be-named movie’s storyline will pick up where the fifth and final season of the program leaves off after the finale airs in January 2009.

Following on the heels of this film announcement, SCI FI Channel and MGM Television Entertainment will further broaden MGM’s Stargate brand with the network by developing a third new series in the franchise, Stargate Universe. Production will begin on the weekly one-hour series early next year with a planned roll out in the summer. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, co-creators of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis and current executive producers on Stargate Atlantis, will continue as executive producers and writers for the new series.

Lifetime will launch Blush: The Search for America’s Greatest Makeup Artist in November, after having ordered six episodes from IMG Entertainment, reports Variety. The last one standing in a field of eight competitors, wins a one year contract with Max Factor, $100,000 and a potential cover for a magazine shoot. The reality series will also feature the competitors living together in one house in LA, a thus far unnamed host, and three celebrity judges from the fashion and beauty industries.

InterMedia Outdoors, Inc., parent company to The Sportsman Channel and producer of sportsmen content, purchased Barrett Productions, producers of outdoor, adventure and sports television content. Combined, the new entity will provide more than 10,000 hours of outdoor video content.

Tyler Perry will bring a TV series version of his movie Meet the Browns to TBS, reports Multichannel News. Interviewed on Entertainment Tonight last Friday, Tyler confirmed the TV version of Meet the Browns would join TBS’ lineup in January. TBS currently airs the sitcom Tyler Perry’s House of Payne which is distributed by Debmar-Mercury and is owned by Lionsgate.

Logo has launched 365gay News, a 30m news magazine show with news and information targeted to LGBT viewers. Logo will air 365gay News, produced by CBS News and hosted by Ross Palombo, weekly on Thursdays at 7p. In addition, 365gay.com will feature news, opinions, video blogs and streaming video produced by CBS News. Southwest Airlines signed on to be the exclusive launch sponsor of both the linear news program and online news outlet, in addition to sponsoring Logo’s upcoming 365gay Newsletter.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: NBCOlympics.com generated just $5.75 million in online video ad revenue from the Olympics according to eMarketer estimates acquired by the WSJ. NBCOlympics.com frustrated fans (and advertisers) by withholding live video of key events from the site and chose not to syndicate the video to other sites, limiting its viral reach. By comparison CBS Sports claims it made $23 million from streaming the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament this year after dropping registration requirements and allowing video to be embedded across multiple portals.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYMore news about Warner Bros.‘ Plans for more superhero movies as Jeff Robinov, Prexy/Warner Bros: Pictures Group tells the Wall Street Journal the studio will reintroduce Superman and that has put a hold on the plans for the movie Batman vs. Superman.  Furthermore, Robinov says that the studio plans to have two DC Comics movie adaptations in the works, which are expected to be single character movies, and will be on the darker side like The Dark Knight. Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Digital Rights Group’s C4i and Hardcash Productions inked a 1-year development deal under which the two will collaborate on developing content for the international market from a specifically allocated fund. C4i will then be in charge of the content’s distribution.  They have previously worked together on several recent projects such as Iraq: The Lost Generation, Child Trafficking, Beneath The Veil and Burma: Inside The Worst Place In The World.
