Cynopsis: Kids!
08/22/11

Good morning. It’s Monday, August 22, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Weekly Reader ( www.weeklyreader.com ) debuts Weekly Reader Connect 2.0, a newly redesigned version of the year-old online reading comprehension program for educators to use with their students in kindergarten through sixth grade.  Weekly Reader Connect ( www.wrconnect.com ) continues to offer Weekly Reader age appropriate news content online, which is regularly updated, and now also features video and other multimedia resources, along with an online reading comprehension program.  Version 2.0’s new features include educational games, vocabulary lessons, more animation and read-aloud materials, grade-specific assessments, a new home page, and 129 additional on-screen reading comprehension lessons.  In its first year Weekly Reader Connect, which is available via a password protected website and sold only for school-wide usage, has been used by 200,000+ students in 46 US states.  The program was created around the Concepts of Comprehension, which was developed by the nonprofit Urban Education Exchange.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

At its annual fan-targeted D23 Expo over the weekend, Disney made a slew of announcements including the next two Disney-Pixar projects (both still untitled), per Coming Soon and THR.  Also featured at the event were Disney-Pixar’s newest movies, Brave and Monsters University, which are slated for release June 22, 2012 and June 21, 2013, respectively.

  • Disney-Pixar‘s new movie projects include one about dinosaurs from director Bob Peterson (Up) and producer John Walker, which is slated for November 27, 2013.  The movie revolves around what would Earth be like if an asteroid that changed the course of our planet had actually missed and thus dinosaurs had never become extinct.  The second film project, directed by Pete Docter (Up, Monsters, Inc.) and produced by Jonas Rivera (Up), is about adventures inside the human mind, where they’ll explore things like memory and how songs get stuck in our heads.  This movie is currently slated for a summer 2014 release
  • Disney-Pixar head John Lasseter also showcased DisneyToon Studios‘ new upcoming Cars CG animated movie spinoff, Planes (2013), which will feature Jon Cryer as the voice of a courageous crop dusting plane named Dusty.

Additionally, a new Toy Story short will be shown with the new movie The Muppets, when the movie opens this November 23, 2011.  The Toy Story short is entitled Small Fry, and was directed by Angus MacLane (he has worked on a range of movies including Up, Wall-E, Ratatouille, Cars, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc., etc.).  The most recent Toy Story short was featured ahead of Cars 2, which released earlier this summer.
