Yahoo and Chinese ecommerce giant the Alibaba Group ended their feud over the transfer of online payment site Alipay to Alibaba CEO Jack Ma on Friday, ending months of negotiations. The deal cuts Alibaba in on Alipay’s future profits but limits the amount of money it can earn in the event of a sale or IPO of the Chinese PayPal to a range of $2 billion-$6 billion. Yahoo owns a 40% stake in Alibaba, but was not consulted when Ma transferred ownership of the company.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
ESPN is preparing an update to its Xbox LIVE interface on Aug. 25 geared around the start of college football season. The Xbox Live ESPN app will now allow you to personalize you daily feed with news and highlights from your favorite teams, allow you to preview upcoming games of your teams through the new “Mini Guide” and view two live ESPN3.com events at once via a new Split Screen option.
 
Public broadcaster PBS says it racked up more than 145 million video views across digital platforms in June, with the ave. viewer spending 18 min. per video and its iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch apps accounting for an amazing 31% of all videos watched during the month. PBS has been offering exclusive premiers on the mobile devices to attract attention to the apps, including a rebroadcast of Ken Burns’ The Civil War and the upcoming premiere of The Fabric of the Cosmos miniseries, available a week in advance via the PBS apps.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Check in service foursquare has rolled out a new integration with daily deals site Groupon, part of the location based Groupon Now offering. Foursquare users will be alerted to Groupon deals in their area via the foursquare mobile app, with both companies sharing in the revenue generated from foursquare-initiated sales.
 
Chartbeat analytics provider Betaworks has introduced a new real-time analytics service for web publishers such as The WSJ, Forbes and Time, which have been trialing newsbeat for the past 6-months. The service includes tools that analyze sudden spikes in traffic or social activity and will alert the publisher when something is afoot. Newsbeat is launching with a free 30-day trial, with monthly subscriptions beginning at $199/month.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
New research from sales and marketing database provider NetProspects found that publisher The New York Times has the most “social” employees, meaning Times workers use social media tools most often when conducting business. Intuit, Juniper Networks, Adobe and Limited Brands rounded out the top 5 and Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Washington Post workers cracked the top 10. The top social cities, measuring activity across 9 social networks including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, were San Francisco, San Jose and New York, in that order.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Looks like there’s more data throttling on the way. After similar movies from T-Mobile and Verizon, AT&T announced it will begin curtailing data speeds for the top 5% of its data-consuming customers beginning Oct. 1, even the ones that have been grandfathered it to its unlimited data plans. The company says the heaviest users (who consume “very large amounts” of video and music) vary month-to-month and tend to use 12-times more data than the average customer.
 
Adobe
officially pulled the plug on its AIR Marketplace and InMarket app store initiatives last week citing “developer feedback.” The app stores were launched to try and create an outlet for third-party AIR and InMarket apps, but apparently failed to attract much attention. Adobe explained that there are now several app stores that serve the platforms, including Apple’s App Store, Android Market and BlackBerry App World.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
The honeymoon already appears to be over for Google’s new social networking service Google+, according to updated research from Experian’s Hitwise. Google+ received more than 1.79M total visits last week ending July 23, a decrease of 3% vs. the previous week ending July 16th. The average time spent on the site was also down by 10% from 5:50 to 5:15. (Note: mobile usage is not counted by Hitwise.)
 
The global feature phone market shrank for the first time since ’09 during Q2 2011, according to IDC data, as competitively-priced smartphones began to penetrate markets around the world. Nokia’s hold on the top global mobile phone spot weakened last quarter as inventory buildups in traditional strongholds such as China and Europe led to sharp shipment declines. The fastest-growing handset maker was Apple, which increased its market share from 2.6% to 5.6%, selling 20.3 million iPhones globally during the quarter. Android-based devices extended their lead in the U.S. and took leadership in Canada thanks to vibrant Samsung, Motorola, HTC and LG sales.

Logitech’s Google TV set-top has really gone over like a lead balloon, as returns of the expensive set-top have actually outpaced sales. To blow out existing inventories the company is holding a fire sale, cutting the price from $249 to $99, the second price cut in a year.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Current TV is replacing departing CEO Mark Rosenthal by once again elevating co-founder and Vice Chairman Joel Hyatt to the post. Mark, former head of MTV and ad firm Interpublic Media, helped re-channel Current TV’s focus from user generated content to news and analysis with the launch of Keith Olbermann’s nightly show.

National Geographic Channel is paying tribute to the upcoming 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks with the launch of a new Facebook app that allows users to post accounts of their experiences and geo-tag their stories on a colorful interactive map created for the occasion. The map includes locations from anywhere around the world, not just New York – allowing users to share their memories from wherever they were on that fateful day. Filters include the ability to search by location or by your list of Facebook friends. The app is available in nine languages beginning today and was created to go along with Nat Geo’s “Remember 9/11 Week”, which kicks off Sunday Aug. 28 with an interview with former President George W. Bush.
