Following Comcast’s planned TV Everywhere iPad app, seven of the top 10 pay TV distributors are planning to launch mobile TV extensions on tablets and other devices in the US, per the WSJ. DirecTV is working on an iPad app that will enable NFL Sunday Ticket fans to watch any game remotely for an additional $50/season. Verizon will release an app for Android, iPad and other devices that enables full-length movies to be rented. Time Warner Cable is planning a TV Everywhere iPad app accessible via Wi-Fi. Meanwhile, Comcast says it has already lined up some (unspecified) content suppliers for its authentication-required iPad app, due out by the end of the year.
Starbucks is adding a number of new programmers to its planned Starbucks Digital Network including Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr., publisher Rodale, Boost and online charity DonorsChoose.org. The default Wi-Fi service website, whose previously announced partners include iTunes, the NYTimes, Patch, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, Yahoo and Zagat, is expected to go live this fall.
Out-of-home entertainment network TouchTunes Interactive Networks is launching its myTouchTunes program this morning, an integrated, bar-based music platform that combines location-based social networking with next-generation digital jukeboxes. Members can create, share and control playlists and “check-in” at their local watering hole to update what they’re listening to and where they are, in real time, via Facebook and Twitter. A rewards program enables users to earn credits each time they play music while logged into the network.
Premium mobile video ad network Rhythm NewMedia is reporting impressive growth of 30% q/q during Q2, equal to the mobile industry benchmark provided by eMarketer for the entire year, with revenue up 50% over the previous quarter. Equally encouraging is an astounding 87.9% completion rate for click-through video with the company’s ave. click-through rates ranging from 2.4% to 11.2% on full-page ads and .8 to 2% on pre-rolls. A secret to higher response rates is adding video to banner ads or full-page ads, according to CEO Ujjal Kohli, helping click-through rates increase by as much as 50%. Rhythm NewMedia says it has been working with about 75 fortune 500 advertisers who are quickly waking up to the potential of premium mobile video advertising, delivered with full episodes and clips to the iPhone/iPod Touch, iPad and Android devices. The company reports it has already sold 75% of its inventory for Q4.
Following a joint investigation by the IRS and the FBI, a pair of midlevel Apple managers were arrested and charged with wire fraud, money laundering and receiving illegal kickbacks totaling at least $1 million, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
India is the latest nation to threaten to block encrypted BlackBerry messages, per the FT.
The PS3 and the Xbox 360 gaming platforms both saw significant increases last month over July ’09, according to the NPD Group. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was the top-selling hardware platform for the month, driven by sales of the new slim-format console. It is the first time since September ’07 (when Halo 3 launched) that the Xbox 360 was the top-selling hardware platform, according to NPD’s Anita Frazier.
Here are some more observations from The Home Broadband 2010 survey from The Pew Internet & American Life Project:
- Americans say they do not believe that the spread of affordable broadband should be a major government priority, by a 53%-41% margin. Interestingly, non-internet users are less likely than current users to say the government should place a high priority on the spread of high-speed connections
- Although America lags in broadband penetration, There is no major issue on which a majority of Americans think that lack of broadband access is a major disadvantage
- 43% of Americans believe that lack of broadband is a “major disadvantage” when it comes to finding out about job opportunities or gaining new career skills. Some 23% think lack of access is a “minor disadvantage” and 28% think it is “not a disadvantage”
- 23% of Americans believe that lack of broadband is a “major disadvantage” when it comes to keeping up with news and information. Some 27% think lack of access is a “minor disadvantage” and 47% think it is “not a disadvantage”
Delta Air Lines launched a Facebook app allowing customers to book flights directly from the page’s “social media ticket window” without having to visit Delta.com. There is no extra booking charge for tickets purchased from the app.
Social gaming company Zynga has hired former MySpace CEO and Facebook CRO Owen Van Natta as EVP/Business Operations. Owen will be charged with managing Zynga’s revenue, corporate development, and international operations. He’s also joining the company’s board of directors.
Former Chicago Tribune TV Critic and “The Watcher” blogger Maureen Ryan has joined AOL Television at Lead Critic.
Affinity Media’s program-your-own TV channel web application WorldTV is upping its game by releasing a new HD-quality embeddable video player that enables users to cobble together and share compilations of clips and shorts in up to 720p (given that you’ve got a fast enough connection.) WorldTV has also upgraded its default YouTube Quality setting, so 480 is now the default and you can switch the resolution setting on the fly. The player/editor features a very intuitive interface that is a nice add-on for third party sites or blogs that want to encourage users to add their own video clips. The advances are leading up to a planned release of version 1 of the service by the end of the year, according to WorldTV founder and CEO Alx Klive, who also sees it as a potential valuable tool for over-the-top services. WorldTV is aptly named as it has attracted over 3 million users from 200 different countries, who have collectively created over 225,000 channels.
