Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, August 15, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Alloy Media + Marketing and Kmart partner again for back-to-school to debut the sequel to their tween/teen-targeted promotional web series First DayFirst Day 2: First Dance  ( and will premiere September 9, 2011 across Alloy’s multiplatform digital network.  The original scripted six episode web series features Kmart fashion lines including Selena Gomez for Dream out Loud, Bongo and Glo.  Promotion for the sequel will be featured digital and social media.  Viewers will be able to purchase looks featured in the series via direct links to those items on the Kmart website.  Kmart will also run a sweepstakes, Show Us Your Best Look ( ), in association with the web series.  Created by Alloy Entertainment (Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, Vampire Diaries, The Nine Lives of Chloe King, among others), First Day 2: First Dance revolves a teenage girl who relives the same day over and over while trying to get to the back-to-school dance where she hopes to regain the attention of her high school crush.  Alloy Digital Network, which reaches 73+ million consumers, includes Alloy owned sites including,,, and, as well as partner sites.


Summit Entertainment looks to Miles Chapman to write the big screen adaptation of the action/adventure Homelanders, which is based on the young adult book series by author Andrew Klavan, per Heat Vision.   Additionally, screenwriters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, showrunners on the TV series Smallville and the new Charlie’s Angels series, are working Chapman to develop the project, and are said to be in talks to co-direct the movie.  Lorenzo Di Bonaventura will produce, with Di Bonaventura Pictures’ David Ready executive producing.  This would mark Gough and Millar’s directorial debut.  A sort of teen Bourne Identity story, the Homelanders books revolve around a high schooler Charlie West, who awakes to find himself tied to a chair and a year gone by.  Following his escape he sets out to uncover why both terrorists and the authorities are chasing him. The fourth and final Homelanders book, The Final Hour, The Homelanders Book Four, released last month.  Klavan’s books True Crimes and Don’t Say a Word have been produced as movies.

DreamWorks Animation names Simon Smith (co-director Bee Movie) to direct its upcoming new Madagascar (untitled) movie spin-off, which will star the fun loving and mischievous penguins, that’s Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico, from the previous Madagascar movies, TV series, DVD and games, per Variety.  Also joining the project is producer Lara Breay (Megamind).  The movie is being penned by Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons (the duo that wrote Megamind).  The penguins will also be featured in the third animated Madagascar feature film that is set for release June 8, 2012.


In Canada, Astral kid’s TV channels Family Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD will launch new series and new episodes of returning series this fall 2011.

  • Family Channel will offer a sneak peek at the new live-action comedy from Disney Channel, Jessie, on September 30 at 9p.  Jessie will air regularly Fridays at 7p from October 14.  PrankStars, a live-action/reality series hosted by Mitchel Musso (Pair of Kings), also from Disney Channel, debuts on Family Channel at 7p on September 30.  The network will also debut new episodes of returning series including Disney’s Shake It Up on Fridays at 6p from October 14, and the Canadian comedy Wingin’ It on Saturdays at 9:30a from September 24.
  • Disney Junior will launch the new short-form animated series Minnie’s Bow-Toons, which stars Minnie Mouse and features Daisy Duck, this November 2011.  The channel will debut new episodes of the Canadian series Stella and Sam, based on the books by author/illustrator Marie-Louise Gay, beginning this October.
  • Disney XD premieres the new second season of the animated series Kick Buttowski- Suburban Daredevil on September 5 at 5:30p.  Leading up to the new season debut the network will feature an all day Kick Buttowski marathon from 11a.  New episodes of the series will air Sundays at 8:30p from September 11.  Disney XD will also feature the second season the Canadian series Connor Undercover beginning September 25 at 3:30p.  New episodes of Connor Undercover will then bow on Sundays at 3:30p.

Teletoon Canada will launch season four of Star Wars: The Clone Wars at Fan Expo Canada 2011, August 27 at 5p at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.  The new Star Wars: The Clone Wars season debut will be hosted at the event by Teletoon at Night’s Fred Kennedy.

TOMY International has completed the acquisition of substantially all of the assets of Boon ( ) and Keen Distribution (, together Boon/Keen.  Boon/Keen is a privately held, developer, marketer and distributor of innovative mom, infant and toddler products.  Boon features branded feeding, bath, decor and organizational products with a unique modern design.  Keen Distribution is the exclusive US marketer/distributor for Bumbo International, which manufactures Bumbo Baby Seat, and products from the UK-based The Gro Company.   TOMY’s design-centric mom, infant and toddler brands include The First Years, Lamaze, and JJ Cole Collections.


K’NEX is set to release its first line of kid-aimed construction toy sets based on the BBC TV series Top Gear in the US and UK this summer/fall 2011.  The new Top Gear building sets feature vehicles from the series, and many of the products include a figure of the Top Gear’s racing driver, The Stig.  The K’NEX Top Gear sets will be available in the US exclusively at Toys ‘R’ US from this month.  The second season of Top Gear will debut in the US on The History Channel later this month.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) and Uglydoll are teaming to create three limited-edition tennis-themed Uglydoll plush characters that will be available during the US Open this year, which runs August 29-September 11, 2011 in Flushing Meadows, Queens.  The new tennis Uglydolls will feature characters Ox, Big Toe and Trunko with their own tennis-themed storyline.  The plushes will be featured in three sizes and will be available at US Open event retail shops beginning August 23 and are currently available at the FAO Schwarz Fifth Avenue store.  Fans can also purchase the dolls at and .

Under a license deal with NFL Properties and NFL Players, the licensing and marketing division of the NFL Players Association, Bleacher Creatures releases its new line of NFL Bleacher Creature plush toys this month.  Each player plush character is dressed in his NFL team uniform.

The six-year-old PBS Kids Sprout is having its strongest summer ever.  Sprout’s June-August in total day grew its audience among K2-5 (+13%), Women 18-49 (+14%) and Households (+17%) over its January-May 2011 averages.  Launched in fall 2005, Sprout is co-owned by Sesame Workshop, HIT Entertainment, PBS and NBCUniversal.
