08/14/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, August 14, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Finale:
Fox:  Hell’s Kitchen 2-hr Finale at 8p

Tonight’s Premiere:
Showtime:  Weeds at 10p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Lifetime Television will premiere three new series this October as part of its fall season schedule:

  • The new reality series Off the Leash is about a Hollywood pet talent agency and the antics some will pull to see their dogs become famous. It is produced by Intuitive Entertainment for Lifetime Television.
  • Bianca (wt) from FremantleMedia North America, is a 20-episode primetime novela starring Virginia Williams, Shirley Jones and Rachel Ward, about a young woman who returns home after being wrongly imprisoned for murder.
  • The Lisa Williams Project (wt) from Merv Griffin Entertainment and Kimo Jagger Productions, showcases the talents of the English clairvoyant who meets ordinary people around southern California, delivering messages from their deceased loved ones.

SOAPnet broke records with its third season finale of I Wanna Be a Soap Star. The finale is the reality series’ most-watched telecast with 406,000 total viewers; 121,000 W18-34 viewers; 221,000 W18-49 viewers; and 237,000 W25-54 viewers.  As of this month, SOAPnet reaches more than 51 million homes, representing a 17% distribution increase from this time last year.

ABC has announced a few scheduling changes for this fall. The hour-long show Ugly Betty will get a boost when it shifts to Thursdays at 8p, leading into Grey’s Anatomy, starting with its premiere on September 28. Ugly Betty was originally scheduled to premiere on Friday, September 22. The comedies Big Day and Notes from the Underbelly will premiere later in the fall after Dancing With the Stars finishes its run, and ABC will continue airing double runs of America’s Funniest Videos on Fridays and Sundays.

GSN has greenlit season three of High Stakes Poker which currently airs Monday nights at 9p. Taping will begin in October, and the location and players will be announced by the network later.

The SCI FI Channel has picked up the exclusive first-run rights for season two of Dr. Who in a new licensing agreement with BBC Worldwide Americas. The series will return next month with a two-hour premiere.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show has been renewed for another three years by the NBC owned and operated TV stations in 10 markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Miami, San Diego and Hartford. Distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, the deal renews the talk show through the 2009-2010 season.

Cross these two off your New Syndicated Strip Programming list for Fall 2006 – Blind Date from NBC Universal, and ElimiDate from Warner Bros.  Blind Date has been cleared in more than 90% of the country for the fall season, but no new episodes will be produced for the season.  NBC Universal will cull from its 1300 episode library to fill the 2006-07.  As for ElimiDate, it was not renewed for the upcoming season.

Debmar-Mercury has just acquired all domestic cable and network television syndication distribution rights for The Surreal Life package of celebrity reality shows produced by 51 Minds Entertainment. The roster includes VH1 shows The Surreal Life, Flavor of Love, The Surreal Life: Fame Games, Strange Love and My Fair Brady. All 175 half-hour episodes of the five series will be available starting fall 2007, with full seasons of each series airing sequentially under the Surreal Life umbrella in the same time slot.

In an advertising first for AOL, Court TV will control advertising on AOL’s Television site all day tomorrow. The roadblock will promote the season two premiere of Court TV’s reality series Parco P.I., also happening in its linear version on August 15 at 10p. AOL Television will give viewers a sneak peak at the full episode within a 30-second teaser video, with an option to continue, thus leading to the full premiere episode airing commercial-free. Other Parco P.I. ads will appear on Yahoo, EW.com and People.com.

TNT will delve into broadband with its new on-demand digital channel, DramaVision, beginning August 15. To introduce the new destination, TNT will offer streaming of its miniseries Into the West. Later, DramaVision will house other TNT original movies, true-crime stories presented in partnership with Court TV, and ancillary features for the network’s special events such as Screen Actors Guild Awards. DramaVision can be found at TNT’s web site at tnt.tv.

Mike Douglas died last Friday, on the occasion of his 81st birthday.  Douglas starred in his own daytime talk show from 1961 thru 1982. The Mike Douglas Show, a combination of talk, music and performance, was perhaps best known for having week-long guest hosts joining Mike, among the most notable were John Lennon and wife Yoko Ono.  For those unfamiliar with the show, perhaps you have seen the often-shown clip of Tiger Woods at age 5 out-putting Bob Hope on the Mike Douglas Show.  Douglas was known as an affable and likeable host, not looking to stir the pot but rather enjoy his guests – and viewers enjoyed watching him do just that.

* PRODUCTION / DEVELOPMENT / CASTING *

AMC has ordered up 13 one-hour episodes of a new drama project called Mad Men from Lionsgate Television.  The show is set in the 1960’s and focuses on the Madison Avenue advertising world, and will star Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, January Jones and Christina Hendricks.  The show is scheduled to premiere next June.

The USA Network will begin production on a new 30-minute reality pilot called Camp Steve-O, starring Jackass and Wildboyz daredevil, Steve-O as he attempts to “de-wussify” American men through humiliating stunts and escapades. The pilot is produced in partnership with Bunim-Murray Productions.  Also ordered by USA is a drama project called Burn Notice from Fuse Entertainment and Fox TV Studios, about an elite agent in the special ops unit who was blackballed, becomes a private detective and while helping those who can’t go to the police for whatever reason, is also investigating those who sent him his “burn notice” ejecting him from the force.

HBO has ordered up another season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.  The first of 10 episodes will begin production in October, and the series is expected to return with new eps in 2007.

NBC announced its next talent competition series, You’re the One That We Want, which will ultimately cast the two leading roles for Broadway’s latest production of Grease which opens in New York June 2007. Produced by BBC Worldwide Productions as a mid-season show, viewers will get to choose who they think should become the next Sandy and Danny. The judges will be Jim Jacobs, the co-creator of Grease; Kathleen Marshall, who is set to direct and choreograph the Broadway production; and David Ian, one of the producers for the new Grease.

Casting Call: The USA Network’s Nashville Star will begin its national casting tour August 31 in Atlanta. The fifth season auditions are open to all men and women who are 18 years or older (as of January 1, 2007), and who think they have what it takes to win a top recording contract. Details about the casting tour, which includes 13 stops through October 12, and to download applications, go to www.usanetwork.com/nashvillestar.
