According to Reuters, former News Corp. president Peter Chernin has submitted a $500 million bid for Hulu, the streaming video website he helped create in 2007. Hulu is a joint venture between Disney and News Corp. It had been reported that the two companies were having talks about selling a stake to the other, as they had been unable to agree on a strategy for Hulu’s future. Chernin is currently the CEO of The Chernin Group, a company with holdings in different types of media.
World Channel will broadcast a special edition of Chicago Tonight dedicated to the memory of Roger Ebert on Tuesday, April 9 at 8p and on Wednesday, April 10 at 1a. The episode will be hosted by Phil Ponce and will feature a specially produced segment of clips followed by discussions among a number of people who knew Ebert well, including his close friend and filmmaker Gregory Nava. Other participants include Thea Flaum, WTTW producer and creator of Sneak Previews; WTTW host Joel Weisman, who attended the University of Illinois with Ebert; Don DuPree, longtime producer/director of Ebert’s television shows; Walter Jacobson, WBBM-TV news anchor, and Milos Stehlik, director of Facets Multi-Media, a film and arts group in Chicago.
If you missed the pivotal ending of episode nine of FX‘s The Americans, you can catch it online. Due to a listings error by FX Publicity, the final seven minutes were cut off on subscribers’ DVRs. The Episode, Safe House, will be available on www.FXnetworks.com until May 15, 2013 for encore viewing. Meanwhile, viewers take note: next week’s episode, Only You, will air on April 10 from 10 to 11:03p.
OWN network airs a new episode of Oprah: Where Are They Now? on Tuesday April 9 at 10p. First up are three survivors from the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, Adam, Craig and Patrick, who explain how they’ve moved on from the tragedy. Heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson discusses his new lifestyle as a happily married, committed father who dropped more than 100 pounds, and has adopted a vegan lifestyle. Plus, America’s number one reality couple, The Bachelorette Trista Sutter and her husband, firefighter Ryan Sutter, update Oprah on what life at their Colorado home, after 10 years of marriage and two children.
Calling All Kittys! Hallmark Channel has announced that on Sunday, February 2, 2014 from 12noon to 9p, the network will air what it’s calling greatest feline showdown in cable television history: Kitten Bowl. The three-hour special call it counter-programming to Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl – will feature the world’s most adorable and adoptable kittens in a cat agility competition. Presented annually, the show is supported by the network’s animal welfare partner, American Humane Association. The goal? For the kitty competitors to find loving, forever homes.
Two of Mexico’s most widely popular traditions, novelas and Mariachi music, intertwine in Univision‘s newest novella Que Bonito Amor (What a Beautiful Love), premiering on Monday, April 15 at 10p. Traditional Mariachi “rancheras” play a starring role in the story of Maria and Santos, two very different people brought together by fate to share their love of music – and more.

History has picked up Vikings, its first scripted drama series, for a 10-episode second season. The renewal comes just five episodes into the show’s freshman outing. Four new episodes remain in the current season with the season finale slated for Sunday, April 28 at 10 p. Vikings is an international Irish/Canadian co-production being co-produced by World 2000 and Take 5 Productions.
Glee has tapped Sons of Anarchy star Katey Sagal to play Kevin McHale’s (Artie) mother. She’ll appear in the Stevie Wonder tribute episode of the FOX series on Thursday, May 2.
British actor Richard E. Grant will guest star on the season three premiere of HBO‘s Girls. He’ll play a character named Jasper.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Practice alum Marla Sokoloff and American Pie’s Shannon Elizabeth have landed guest spots on ABC Family‘s Melissa & Joey. Elizabeth appears in episode eight as Melissa Joan Hart’s college sorority sister, Anita. Sokoloff turns up in episode seven as Blythe, a chiropractor who hits it off with Joey Lawrence.
Production has begun on the ABC Family original series The Fosters, a one-hour drama about a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms. The show premieres on Monday, June 3 at 9p and is being produced by Nuyorican Productions, Inc., and Prodco, Inc.
There’s more History coming to the UK. New channel H2 is being launched on Saturday, May 4. Part of the A&E Networks brand portfolio, H2 is a complementary brand to History. Premiering on the channel will be new series Serial Killer Earth and Ultimate Soldier Challenge. Other programs include Time Team America and Beast Legends. H2 launched in the United States in September 2011.
Content Television, a division of Content Media Corporation, has licensed its flagship natural history documentary Facing The Atlantic to international broadcasters including National Geographic Channel, Discovery Networks, France TV and VRT. The series, which follows a journey to the wildest and most remote locations of Western Europe, will air later this year across National Geographic Channel’s pay TV and digital platforms throughout the UK, Europe, Japan and Africa. The Discovery Networks sale is a pan-territory agreement covering Asia.
CABLEready, the international television program distribution and development company, has concluded deals for the exclusive international rights to five new television series and will begin offering them to buyers attending the Cannes market. The shows acquired are Odd Folks Home, produced by Leftfield Pictures; Shooting Stars, produced by Worldwide Media Group; The REELZ Show produced by REELZ; Revealed, produced by REELZ; and Disney Parks, produced by Lightship Entertainment.
Me-TV Network has signed seven new affiliates in agreements with stations in Nashville (DMA #29), Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek, Michigan (DMA #38), Rockford, Illinois (DMA #135), Monroe, Louisiana (DMA #137), Sioux City, Iowa (DMA #147), Bismarck-Minot, North Dakota (DMA #151) and Bluefield-Beckley, West Virginia (DMA #156). These new affiliates bring Me-TV to 147 markets. The network now clears 89% of the country.
Thursday A18-49 Analysis: CBS led the ratings pack with the A18-49 viewers Thursday at 3.5/11, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS was on top as The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men combined for a 4.6/15. FOX’s American Idol took second at 2.9/9. ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy took over first place at 9p winning with a 2.8/8, closely followed by CBS’ Person of Interest at 2.7/8. ABC held onto the lead at 10p with Scandal at 2.6/8, while CBS’ Elementary trailed at 2.1/6

Crown Media Family Networks, home of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, has promoted Amy Jo Wayne to Senior Vice President of national advertising sales. Wayne, who previously served as SVP of eastern advertising sales, will continue to create advertising solutions to leverage all client and planner opportunities nationwide and will also be charged with developing a national sales strategy for Crown Media in the marketplace.
Levels Beyond, creators of Reach Engine, a software platform providing streamlined media-management, distribution, optimization and monetization capabilities for video, has appointed media veteran Nick Rhodes as President and Chief Operating Officer. Rhodes recently joined Levels Beyond as the Denver-based company establishes its Santa Monica office, after consulting for the company on marketing strategy and business plans to help secure private equity funding, which was achieved in December 2012.
Univision Communications Inc. has named Ken Wilkey as Senior Vice President, Engineering and Technical Operations, Univision Television Group. Wilkey will lead operations and engineering for all 62 UTG affiliates including Puerto Rico. Wilkey previously worked with Univision on assignments including The Univision Agency, graphics and other projects for the Engineering and Operations teams.
