Good morning. It’s Monday, April 4, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Resonant, a producer of TV content, and Elastic Rights enter into a deal to develop and co-produce the new youth-targeted novela La Musa (The Muse), based on an original idea from Resonant. Targeted specifically for youth viewers in Southern Europe and Latin America, La Musa is set to be ready for 2012. La Musa follows a character sent to Earth to inspire a singer who doesn’t seem to be able to write songs anymore. Resonant will oversee the creative and the production, which will be produced in Buenos Aires, with Elastic Rights handling financing and international distribution and licensing.
Nickelodeon’s 24th annual Kids’ Choice Awards, hosted by Jack Black, aired Saturday, April 2, 8-9:30p, live from the Galen Center at USC in LA. Kids cast a record-setting 200 million votes via several online opportunities (websites, mobile website, iPhone app, Facebook) between March 7-April 2 in 20 categories. The annual scream fest featured more slime than ever with the audience and lots of celebrities, including Snoop Dogg, Heidi Klum, Jason Segal among others, getting the green once over. The 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards (KCA) is now available on VOD, with KCA clips and shorts also available on Nickelodeon’s mobile VOD and online syndication partners. Presenting sponsors of the 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards are Burger King, General Mills, Hasbro and General Motors. Associate sponsors are Nintendo, Procter & Gamble, Kraft, Skechers and Kmart. NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Ryan Reynolds is said to be on the verge of signing on to lend his voice the lead character in DreamWorks Animation‘s upcoming animated feature Turbo, per Varity. The story revolves around a garden snail that dreams of becoming the fastest snail ever. Currently set for a June 7, 2013 release, Turbo will be directed by David Soren (Merry Madagascar) from a script he co-wrote with Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After).
More casting news, as Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. readies production on its family-targeted supernatural move The Seventh Son, based on Joseph Delaney’s book The Last Apprentice: Revenge of the Witch (US title) by, the first title in his young adult The Wardstone Chronicles series, per Variety. Deals in the works include Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) and Alicia Vikander as the two main roles of Tom and Alice. Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore are also in negotiations for the roles of the specter and the witch, respectively. The movie will be directed by Sergei Bodrov (Mongol).
Dan Scanlon (Mater and the Ghost Light) is set to direct Disney-Pixar‘s new Monsters University, the Monsters, Inc. movie prequel, per Coming Soon. As previously reported John Goodman and Billy Crystal will reprise their roles as the voices of Sulley and Mike. Monsters University is slated for a November 2, 2012 release.
DHX Media acquires the worldwide TV and licensing and merchandising rights (excluding Australia) to the new animated comedy series SheZow! (52×11) from Australia’s Moody Street Kids and LA-based Kickstart Productions. Created by Obie Scott Wade, the series was produced with funding from Film Victoria for Channel 10 (Australia), and has also been presold to ABC Australia. Targeted to K8-12, SheZow! revolves around the adventures of Guy Hammon (12), who considers himself all guy Guy, as he gains unique super powers from his late Aunt Agnes’ ring and becomes SheZow! OK, here’s the thing Guy’s newfound superhero status is complicated for him, the ring (and thus the outfit) was really intended to for a girl, so when Guy readies to fight evil and transforms into SheZow! his costume is that of a traditional female superhero, high heeled go-go boots and the like. Of course he also gets cool powers like super strength and speed, and the unfamiliar feminine intuition, which is an odd feeling for him.
Zodiak Active Kids Entertainment‘s new tween/teen multi-platform property, The Qpiz, developed by Zodiak Kids and co-produced with RaiGulp, grows in Italy. Zodiak Active has secured a deal with Libero.it, an internet portal in Italy that reports 12+ million visitors every month, for The Qpiz to be available on the portal via a dedicated website, theqpiz.libero.it. The portal will allow Libero.it users to access exclusive content from The Qpiz world. The Qpiz (52×3) animated shorts continue to be popular. Zodiak Kids handles all international licensing, merchandising and TV broadcast rights (excluding Asia and Italy). Teamworks will manage the licensing and merchandising rights in Italy.
Elastic Rights inks a deal RTP (Portugal) for the free TV rights for seven Dolphin Entertainment produced TV movies, which the channel will premiere in 2011. RTP has acquired rights to three Nickelodeon’s TV movies Shredderman Rules, The Last Day of Summer, and Gym Teacher, The Movie. The other movie titles include, Roxy Hunter and the Mystery of the Moody Ghost, Roxy Hunter and the Secret of the Shaman, Roxy Hunter and the Myth of the Mermaid and Roxy Hunter and the Horrific Halloween, which follow the adventures of Roxy Hunter, an irrepressible nine year-old, and are currently airing on Nickelodeon in 100 countries worldwide. Elastic Rights manages the rights for these Dolphin Entertainment TV Movies in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Turkey, and is working broadcast deals for the rest of the territories.
In more Elastic Rights news, the company has completed a number of deal with the pay TV kid-targeted Panda channel in Portugal.
- Panda renews its deal for new episodes of the preschool series Ruca and Lunar Jim. Panda re-ups for all four season of Ruca, which is based on the books by Christine Leroux and follows the adventures of the curious Caillou and his family. The channel has also picked up the rights for season two of Lunar Jim (20×30), which is co-produced by The Halifax Film Company and Lunar Jim Productions, in association with CBC, SRC and the participation of BBC Kids. Lunar Jim revolves around the explorations of a little astronaut Jim and his pals. The series is distributed by Echo Bridge Entertainment.
- Panda also picks up the pay TV rights for the preschool animated series Toot & Puddle. Based on the books by Holly Hobbie, Toot & Puddle follows the adventures of the best piggy pals as they explore new places and cultures around the world. Toot & Puddle is also airs on Boomerang in Spain and in Italy on Boomerang and Italia 1. Elastic Rights is in conversations to close a Free TV deal in Spain as well as broadcasting deals in Greece and Turkey. Toot & Puddle is produced by Canada’s Mercury Filmworks, in association with National Geographic Kids Entertainment.
Hit Entertainment completes pre-sales of the new CGI animated series Mike the Knight (52×12) in four new territories. Acquiring the preschool series are ABC Australia, SVT (Sweden), DRTV (Denmark) and NRK (Norway). Mike the Knight is slated to premiere on Treehouse (Canada) in September 2011, TF1 (France) in October 2011, and Cbeebies (UK) in November 2011, and will then rollout in these new territories. The series is a co-production between Hit and Nelvana Studio, a unit of Corus Entertainment. Hit is featuring Mike the Knight at MIPTV this weeks, as well as Thomas & Friends (series 1-15), Fireman Sam (series 1-8), Angelina Ballerina (series 1-6), and Bob the Builder (series 1-18), as well as 65 new episodes of the CGI animated preschool series MuMuHug from Taiwan’s Sofa Studio, season two of the CGI animated series Shelldon from Thailand’s Shellhut Entertainment, and further episodes of Chapman Entertainment’s Little Charley Bear.
HBO Family Latin America acquires the pay TV and VOD rights to the preschool series the WotWots (52×10) from ABC Commercial. Under the exclusive two-year deal, the episodes will be dubbed into Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish. the WotWots is produced by Pukeko Pictures and made at Richard Taylor’s Weta Workshop (Lord of the Rings, King Kong). Pukeko Pictures is a partnership between Taylor and author and kid’s TV creator, Martin Baynton. Taylor and Baynton previously teamed to create Jane and the Dragon.
Aardman Rights, a unit of Aardman Animation, acquires the worldwide distribution rights to the Cbeebies preschool series Tilly and Friends (52×11). Based on author/illustrator Polly Dunbar’s kid’s books, the Tilly and Friends series is produced by Ireland’s Jam Media and Walker Productions, the TV production arm of Walker Books. Aardman Rights is showcasing the series this week at MIPTV.
Dinosaur Train celebrates trains this May 2011 with special programming and activities. Dinosaur Train, from The Jim Henson Company, will debut new a new episode (2×11) on May 6 on PBS Kids (check local listings). Additionally, special train-themed activities and events will be featured in partnership with local PBS stations and on the Dinosaur Train (www.pbskids.org/dinosaurtrain) website. National Train Day is May 7, 2011. Select PBS Stations across the US will host train-themed events (e.g. series screenings, costume character appearances, and hands on educational activities) throughout May, including PBS SoCal, Los Angeles; WXXI, Rochester, New York; WJCT, Jacksonville, Florida; Houston PBS; KERA, Dallas, Texas; UNCTV, North Carolina state network; WHYY, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; AETN, Arkansas Educational Television Network; Vegas PBS, Las Vegas, Nevada; and WOSU, Columbus, Ohio.
Radio Disney kicks off its 15th anniversary celebration today with a line up stars that will be featured on Take Over with Ernie D. The DJ’s guests will include Selena Gomez, Willow Smith, Jordin Sparks, Greyson Chance, Cody Simpson, Ashley Tisdale, and Austin Butler, as well as cast members from Disney Channel series Shake It Up and Good Luck Charlie and the new TV movie Lemonade Mouth. The channel will also showcase noted moments with celebrities from its 15-year history, including a Flashback song each hour, as well as offering give-a-ways.
Kidobi adds several preschool series to its video library under new distribution deals with content producers. Kidobi acquires The Adventures of Mouse and Mole from LA’s Organa. It also picks up The Longhouse Tales (26×30) and the short-form series Farzzles World (130×3) from Toronto-based CCI Entertainment. Developed by Henning Software Solutions, Kidobi (www.kidobi.com) is designed to offer personalized video playlists based on the educational needs of individual kids. Kidobi is looking for Beta testers.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Hasbro has released its new My3D, a $35 plastic handheld viewer (www.hasbro.com/hasbromy3d/en_us/) that users can attach to their iPhone or iPod Touch and that is kinda like a high-tech View-Master (not a Hasbro product, I know), which presents gaming, tour and other applications in a 360-degree 3D viewing environment. Hasbro has also released a series of apps for the MY 3D device, some free for now, including My3D Presents, a movie trailer app, Sector 17, a first person shooter and 3D maze app Bubble Bolt which you navigate by tilting the phone in the right direction. Target and Target.com has exclusive rights to sell the MY 3D viewer until June.
Huffy Corporation enters into a licensing deal with Marvel Entertainment to produce products featuring five Marvel properties. Huffy will release products based on Marvel Studios‘ upcoming feature films Thor (May 6), Captain America: The First Avenger (July 22), and The Avengers (spring 2012) at select online and brick and mortar retailers in the US and Canada. Huffy bikes and scooters for Spider-Man Classic and Marvel Heroes are currently in development and will be available via the same retailers in mid-2011. The movie specific wheeled products will be released ahead of each movie release.

Animation studio Intervalists changes its name to Dandelooo! The newly named boutique company plans to develop, produce and distribute original animated short and long-form content as well as feature films. The newly named Dandelooo! welcomes to executive formerly of Nelvana, producer Emmanuele Petry-Sirvin as head of International Development, and Leyla Formoso, who will oversee Worldwide Sales and Distribution. Petry-Sirvin also previously toiled for Millimages, and Formoso for Angel Eye. The company was founded several years ago by Producer Jean Baptiste Wery, formerly of TF1, Cedric Babouche (creator of the short film Imago), and writer Sydelia Guirao (Prix Beaumarchais). Currently in production at Dandelooo! is Chico Chica Boumba (52×3.30min), with co-producer 2 Minutes, for M6 (France). The company will oversee distribution for the Alphanim catalogue in the US and Latin America. It also distributes shows including The Podcats (Morgane Prod, Okidoki, FTV) in Latin America, Spain and Portugal; Pipi, Pupu and Rosmary (Enzo d’Alo, Cometa Films and Paul Thiltges) ; Ninon (Ciel de Paris) for world wide sales, and the Fishtronaut (TV Pinguim) for Latin America and France.
