Good morning, it’s Monday, April 30, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

News Corp. has named Emiliano Calemzuk as President/Fox Television Studios, stepping in where Angela Shapiro-Mathes stepped off.  Emiliano will report directly to Peter Chernin, News Corp Pres/COO.  In addition to scripted and alternative based series, Fox Television Studios also includes made-for-TV movies, international, Regency TV and Fox World.  Current series include FX’s The Riches and The Shield, E!’s reality series Girls Next Door, CW’s reality series Crowned and a new scripted series coming to USA, Burn Notice. Emiliano has spent the last several years as President of the Fox International Channels in Italy.  Shapiro-Mathes left Fox TV Studios to head up cable network TLC.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Atonal Sports and Entertainment will launch The Ski Channel in 1st quarter 2008, and has already signed a long term carriage deal with Time Warner Cable.  The ad-supported network will include content covering everything a person can do on a ski mountain, both in the winter and the summer including skiing and snowboarding of course, as well as hiking, climbing, caving, kayaking and other activities. The programming will feature entertainment, reality, news, destination, travel, real estate, equipment, instruction and magazine shows, as well as professional mountain sport events.

Ovation TV will undergo a relaunch on June 20 with a new distribution deal with DirecTV, a new programming strategy, and a new tag line – Make Life Creative.  Content will include themed nights, each evening focusing on a different medium, but all containing original programming. Ovation TV will make itself available on multiple platforms including VOD and online, and will include education video provided by two schools – The Harlem School of the Arts and the LA-based P.S. Arts.  Announcements as to programming and agreements with other arts organizations are expected to be made soon.

SCI FI Channel has new original series to introduce this summer, plus the network will return many others to its line-up. The new series include:

  • Destination Truth  premieres June 6 at 10p; during the six one-hour episodes viewers will follow adventurer Josh Gates as he explores mysterious places and supernatural stories.
  • Derren Brown Project (title TBD)  premieres July 25 at 10p; American viewers will get to know British mentalist Derren Brown during the six one-hour episodes. Produced by Objective Productions.
  • Flash Gordon  premieres August 10; the classic science fiction comic strip characters, with a modern-day twist, come to life with Eric Johnson starring as Flash. Produced by Reunion Pictures and distributed internationally by RHI Entertainment.

Returning series premiering this summer on SCI FI include:

  • Ghost Hunters  new episodes start June 6 at 9p
  • Doctor Who  season three begins July 6 at 9p
  • Eureka  season two starts July 10
  • Who Wants to be a Superhero?  second season premieres July 25 at 9p

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Just two months after receiving a promotion at MTV, Lois Curren, President/Entertainment and Programming, will downsize her responsibilities, though will retain her position, title and office at the network’s Santa Monica headquarters. MTV has indicated Lois’ reduced work load is due to personal reasons and that she will still be the point person on several projects. Tony DiSanto, EVP/Series Development and Animation and head of programming at MTV2 will permanently take over the day-to-day duties for ongoing development. MTV staffers who reported to Lois will now report to Tony, and Tony will report to Brian Graden, President/Entertainment, MTV Networks Music Group and Logo.

Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. has hired Lisa DiMarzio as SVP/Partner Marketing for TV Guide to create strategic marketing partnerships that extend TV Guide’s brand across multiple platforms. Additionally, the company has employed Jodi A. Gusek, Ph.D. as SVP/Corporate Research to spearhead all primary research efforts for TV Guide. Both will be based at the company’s Los Angeles headquarters and will report to Alan Cohen, EVP/CMO.
 
Barry Hicks has taken on the position as Operations Assistant at Cox Media Hampton Roads (VA).
 
National Geographic Channel
announces several staffing changes:

  • Char Serwa has been advanced to VP/Production to oversee the production department which manages the editorial execution of all original programs for NGC.
  • Cindy Linnell has joined NGC as Director/Production Management to handle commission, co-production and presale programs for the network in addition to implementing policies and procedures for the production management division.
  • Joyce Romano has been added as Director/Program Planning and Budget to sync up programming and production hours with the network budget. She will also work with Finance and Business Affairs and Ad Sales departments.

GEM Group has named Deborah Grossman and Jennifer Kauf as Co-Presidents for the company based in New York. Both will move the agency’s strategic goals forward and share the business and operational duties.

THURSDAY – A18-49 AnalysisABC kicked off the May Sweep with a Thursday night victory with 5.2/14 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. Coming in second, CBS narrowed the gap with 4.8/13, followed by NBC 3.2/9, FOX 2.8/8, UNIV 1.7/5, CW 1.4/4 and TELE 0.8/2. CBS started off with a win at 8p with Survivor: Fiji at 4.5/13. Then at 9p, ABC surged way ahead with Grey’s Anatomy at 8.2/21, then stayed in the lead during 10p with the season finale of October Road at 4.2/12.
