Cynopsis: 10th ANNIVERSARY EVENT CALENDAR

4/2/07

Good Morning, it’s still Monday, April 2, 2007 and this is your Cynopsis 10th Anniversary Event Calendar!

Cynopsis launched on April 2, 1997, and began as a simple internal office memo.  I was working at MMT Sales as VP/Programming & Research, and Cynopsis, then known as News of the Day, began as a way to alert our research department of broadcast programming changes from the networks and our clients.  Back then Cynopsis was delivered by fax or by AOL, as email in the office – even AOL – was rare at best.

At the end of that first year, I had 100 subscribers and feeling pretty full of myself.  By the end of year 2, I had changed jobs to VP/Programming at TV Land and had 450 subscribers … ah, the big time! That was also when we changed the name from News of the Day to Cynopsis – thunk up by a very clever fellow, my dad, Dick Cox.

By mid-2000, with just 2200 subscribers, I wanted to see if Cynopsis could actually be a money-making operation.  I resigned my post at TV Land and set out to make Cynopsis my full time job. In October 2000 I signed my first advertiser – Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution. A scarey moment as I’d never done a sales deal before, and while we were going over the terms, my remote phone was beeping because the battery was about to die. Fortunately, Linda Abrams is a fast talker and we made it thru the deal points before the phone went dead.  I appreciated Linda and her WBDCD business then and I appreciate both her and her business now.

Cynopsis continued to grow, all by word of mouth, adding hundreds of new subscribers every month.  In September 2001 we added the Classifieds, and by November we had tripled our subscriber base to 6000+.   I continued to be a one-person operation, adding every subscriber into the database by hand, selling branding ads and taking classifieds ads, learning a lot more about sales, all while still writing and sending the daily edition.

In early 2002 I made our first move – Gwen Billings had come on board and on June 3, 2002 we began publishing Cynopsis Kids! .  That first edition went to just 1,111 subscribers.   The following October, we hit another milestone – Cynopsis had 10,000 subscribers, and by January 2003 CynKids had more than doubled its sub base to 2650. By the end of that year, Cynopsis had doubled again – now up to 20,000 subscribers, CynKids now going out to 4,306 subs each day.  And plans for another new edition were in the works …

On April 19, 2004, Ariana Rawls joined the group, and we launched Cynopsis International.  One year later we launched the weekly Cynopsis Weekender edition, and just two weeks ago, we debuted our latest daily – Cynopsis Digital written by Wayne Karrfalt.  And don’t forget about CableU (www.cableu.tv), the cable research and programming website site launched in partnership with CableReady in December 2006!

We also brought in investors – the Merchant Banking Division of HT Capital Advisors LLC became involved in Cynopsis at the end of November 2005 and helped steer the growth and expansion of the Cynopsis brand, and generally make sure we don’t screw things up too badly.

Today, Cynopsis has a subscriber base of 55,000+ and a daily readership of 144,700 worldwide with pass-along.  CynKids has a daily readership of 34,800; International 23,920; Weekender 102,260; and Digital 134,160.  Thankfully by now we’ve figured out how to use technology to add subscribers through our website so I don’t have to add them by hand any more!  We’re read in more than 35 countries – the obvious ones as well as some not-so-obvious: Turkey, Iceland, Russia, Singapore, Chile, the Philippines and a few others. We’ve also launched daily audio podcasts of all four daily editions, and a daily video podcast of Cynopsis – all of which are available on our website homepage and iTunes.

With all that, I still get up every day at 3am to receive the draft editions from our staff of writers, compile and put together all four of our daily editions and get them all out to you before the sun comes up on the East Coast.  And I’m hardly alone any more – we now have a total of 12 people on staff including our Sales team and administrative, videographers, voice people for the podcasts, writers and editors, and all housed in seven different states.

I’d say we’re doing pretty darn good!
