Good Morning.  It’s Monday, April 21, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.  And as always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here.

Viacom and three studios, Lionsgate, MGM, and Paramount Pictures, are joining forces to launch a new pay-TV channel, still unnamed, in the fall of 2009. The new channel will be steeped with online and VOD elements and will be headquartered at Viacom’s Times Square offices. This gives MGM and Lionsgate, which are not associated with a TV network, ownership stake in a TV channel. It is planned that the new channel will feature new and classic movies and original TV series produced by the partnering studios. In addition to libraries owned by the studios, the venture will use all Paramount and Paramount Vantage titles released theatrically on or after January 1, 2008 and MGM, United Artists and Lionsgate titles releases theatrically on or after January 1, 2009. During the pay TV window, the new channel will have exclusive rights to such titles of recent and future films as Iron Man, Star Trek, Cloverfield and other library films as Dirty Dancing, Crash as well as the Godfather series and the Rocky and James Bond franchises. The new network will not be ad-supported.

Tonight’s Finale:
ABC Family: America’s Prom Queen at 9p

Tribune Broadcasting President Ed Wilson is reconsidering its decision to get out of the syndication business.  According to Variety, Tribune is looking at putting together a new syndication arm which will distribute only third party product – first run and off-net – and not produce any of its own. Joel Berman‘s name is being bandied about as the possible head of this new distribution venture.  It was only last December that Tribune announced it would close down its production and distribution division.

An 85-title feature film library from Disney-ABC Domestic Television found a new home on HBO starting 2012. This is the second package acquired by HBO from Disney-ABC Domestic Television in six months, with the previous one settled last October comprising 100 titles. The new agreement includes films such as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, National Treasure, Chicago, The Princess Diaries, The Lizzie McGuire Movie and more.

SCI FI Channel is stretching the current seasons of Ghost Hunters and Destination Truth. Thirteen new episodes were ordered for Ghost Hunters’ fourth season airing on Wednesdays at 9p, and Destination Truth will be back this fall with seven more episodes for its second season.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Canadian singing duo, Carmen and Camille Thomas signed a development agreement with Salient Media of Beverly Hills. The deal allows for Salient Media to create, produce and sell a scripted or partially scripted show featuring the twin sisters as they continue to build their musical career and maintain their sibling relationship.

Alicia Silverstone has been cast in ABC‘s comedy pilot Bad Mother’s Handbook from ABC Studios, as the 32 year old mother of a 16 year old daughter, per THR.  In the role of the teenage daughter is Alia Shawkat.

Also from THR, Philip Winchester and Anna Walton have joined the cast of NBC‘s drama series Crusoe. Winchester has been cast in the title role, while Walton will play his wife, Susannah. The series is being produced by Power Entertainment, and is scheduled to air on Friday nights at 8p this fall.

Departing from NBC/Wolf Films’ Law & Order: SVU at the end of the season will be Adam Beach, as well as Diane Neal who plays ADA Casey Novak.  The news of Novak leaving isn’t really news – you knew that already.  As for Beach, who played Detective Chester Lake, he had a one year deal with an option for a second, and neither side chose to pick up that option.  While Beach’s role will not be recast, a new ADA will be showing up next season.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   Figuring to cut the middleman out of the equation as VOD movie revenues ramp up, Viacom, MGM and Lions Gate Entertainment have decided to join forces to launch a new premium pay channel planned for the fall of 2009. The move is being seen as the next body blow in the family squabble between sister firms Viacom and CBS Corp., as the three studios have been CBS subsidiary Showtime’s only movie suppliers until now. The venture will also work to jointly distribute the studios’ films online. Five studios overall are involved in the venture: Paramount, Paramount Vantage, Lionsgate, the newly retooled MGM and United Artists, now co-owned by Paula Wagner and Tom Cruise. Viacom, the lead investor, will provide operational support to the venture including marketing and affiliate services through MTV Networks.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYTokyopop and Spacedog Entertainment have entered into a multi-project development deal to create original properties for multi-media distribution.  The first manga series produced under the new agreement will be eV.  Created by writer James Farr (Xombie: The Animated Series; My Pet Robot, Shadows of Oz) and Alfa Robbi (Boneka Kematian, Go-Go F5), eV revolves around Evie, a high school girl who gets an nanotech upgrade and becomes Earth’s representative in an alien parliament.  The eV manga series is available in stores beginning this month.   Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORYTelescreen in the Netherlands has been appointed by Korea’s Cocaban to rep its Dibo the Giftdragon preschool series in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe for TV, home video and merchandising.  With the ink barely dry on the Ocon Animation Studios Inc. series deal, Telescreen signed a Nickelodeon broadcast agreement in Benelux while CNR took the home video rights.
