Good morning. It’s Monday, April 19, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Japan’s Dentsu Inc. on Friday set up, Dentsu Entertainment USA, Inc., a new company that will develop original content and expand worldwide sales of content licenses, such as Chub City (toys), Deltora Quest (animation) and Mameshiba. Based in Santa Monica, California, the new company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dentsu. Additionally, Dentsu Entertainment USA is forming a partnership with US-based toy manufacturer Jakks Pacific to co-produce an animated TV series and toy line for boys based on the original property Monsuno, which is slated to bow in the North America, Europe and Asia in 2011, and develop a license marketing business. Furthermore, Dentsu Entertainment USA and Jakks Pacific plan to form a joint venture later this month that will manage the Monsuno licensing business and expand it worldwide.
HIT Entertainment has reached an agreement with its lenders to amend and extend its credit facilities, and on Sunday provided this statement from Jeff Dunn, Pres/CEO: “We are delighted to conclude these negotiations with our lending group and are grateful for their support. This allows us to focus on what we do best – making great entertainment for kids.” The company reports increased revenues to $249.2m from $238.4m in the 12 months to July 31, 2009.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Cookie Jar Entertainment furthers its new live-action efforts with a new pilot for Cartoon Network from writer Steven de Souza (Die Hard, 48 Hours), per THR. Cookie Jar’s other live-action projects in development include the tween-targeted Decidedly Debra, about a 14-year-old magical girl, from writers Andres Nicholls and Darrell Vickers, for Family Channel (Canada), and a primetime tween/teen aimed romantic comedy that is set in a coffee shop for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).
Capstone Publishers teams up with lawyer/producer Eric Feig and actress/writer Marisa Coughlan to bring Stone Arch Books‘ kid-targeted books and characters, Capstone’s fiction imprint, to movies, TV, new media and licensed products, per Publisher’s Weekly. Feig and Coughlan, the latter a part of Capstone’s founding family, plan to work with literary representative Alan Gasmer and licensing agent Ken Abrams on potential projects.

Featuring a budget of US$2 million, the new series revolves around Eori, a boy that saves a fairy that in return provides him with a lifetime of adventure by giving him mask that can magically place him as a character in her wide range of storybooks. The stories are all based on Malaysian, Korean and international folk tales. Primary work on the series will be produced in Malaysia, where it will create 100+ jobs. Additionally, StoryCorps debuts its new iPhone app this month. Developed by Bottle Rocket, the new app also provides an easy way to record an interview (with a current focus on Moms), including a list of questions and tips for recording on the iPhone and sharing conversations via email, Facebook and Twitter, as well as listening to various StoryCorps favorites. Of course if you don’t want to do that you can check out locations of StoryCorps booths across the country and make a reservation at www.storycorps.org/record-your-story/locations.
