Cynopsis: DIGITAL

4/16/07

Good Morning, it’s Monday, April 16, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Google won the bidding war for internet ad-serving company DoubleClick, agreeing to pay private equity firm Hellman & Freidman  $3.1 billion – almost double what Google paid for YouTube last year. The deal brings the two juggernauts of search and display advertising together under a single banner and keeps Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL – all of which were bidding for the company – from establishing a stronger foothold in the internet advertising business. Google says combining the company will:

  • improve users’ experience on the web by increasing the relevancy of ads they see
  • provide online publishers access to new advertisers and more efficient monetization of ad inventory
  • improve management and metrics for display and search advertisers
  • enable agencies to optimize ad spending across different online media

In the meantime, Google’s internet and media rivals are already moving to try and convince antitrust regulators to take a hard look at the planned merger, which is subject to a review by the Department of Justice or the Federal Trade Commission.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

The TV Guide Online Video Guide launches today, a tool to help online users find video content from 55 different sites. A combination search tool and recommendation site, the guide allows users to search by show, actor, genre or network, scanning metadata for key works and phrases. Clips are indexed as TV Guide picks, most popular and most recently added. The clip collector feature acts as a digital scrapbook where clips can be easily collected and saved for later viewing. Initially the video guide will concentrate on branded, professionally-produced programming–the site’s source list is made up primarily of broadcast & cable networks. However, TV Guide plans to add pure play internet producers in the future, according to project manager Kirsten Rasanan.

The CW
launched a new WAP-based mobile website (wap.cwtv.com) that offers unique cross-platform functionality with cwtv.com. Users can access online CW message boards built around network shows and stars from either the website or the mobile site. Integrating a web and mobile platform is a first for a broadcast network, according to CW’s Rick Haskins, EVP, Brand Marketing & Strategy.

NPR News
will offer live audio streaming of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing on the Department of Justice Oversight as it looks into the matter of the firings of eight U.S. attorneys. Talk of the Nation host Neal Conan will anchor the coverage, scheduled to begin 10 a.m. ET on Tuesday. NPR.org will also provide additional materials such a timeline of the case and background information on each of the fired U.S. attorneys.

Wenner Media’s Rolling Stone is planning to launch its own social networking site separate from its main website, featuring user-generated best-of lists, blogs and personal profiles. The company is also working on digitizing all 1,000 back issues of Rolling Stone, to be available for purchase on rollingstone.com or on DVD by Christmas.

USAToday.com‘s “network journalism” initiative launched in March helped boost unique visitors by 21% from the previous month, as the site logged 10.9 million unique visitors during February. Visitors also spent more time per visit, uploading and interacting with commentary and user-generated recommendations.
Music and video distributor Digital Music Group, Inc. (DMGI) acquired a catalog of more than 150 hours  of classic children’s TV shows and animated features, including Bozo the Clown Show and the Howdy Doody Show.

Bud.TV‘s traffic dropped 40% during February to 152,000 unique users. Anheuser-Busch introduced the online comedic TV network with great fanfare in February, saying it expected between 2 to 3 million visitors a month by early next year. The site has suffered from partly from a cumbersome age-verification system that attempts to weed out users under the drinking age.

WWE.com launched a “List This!” feature to chronicle the most memorable moments in SmackDown history. The show will broadcast its 400th episode on Friday night on The CW.

DirecTV will launch the first satellite-based video-on-demand service in July with over 2,000 movie and TV titles, many in HD. More than a dozen cable networks have signed on, including Food Channel, Discovery and Showtime. The content will be delivered to DirecTV’s HD DVR through a broadband connection.

EMI settled its longstanding copyright dispute with The Beatles that frees up the entire Fab Four catalogue to be made available online. Seeing as how Apple, the computer company, and Apple Corps, the Beatles’ holding company, also settled their dispute over the Apple moniker, perhaps we’ll see a Beatles special edition version of the iPod.

Correction: Friday’s story about TVGuide.com‘s breaking news category mentioned the site hadn’t updated its top stories that day. Apparently the site did change its stories several times on Friday; someone just forgot to refresh their browser!

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Warner Music Group demanded its digital albums be removed from the new Digital Rights Management-free online music store AnywhereCD, hours after the site officially launched. The start-up offers only full-length albums, which users can browse by genre, artist, song or CD title. The move comes a week after EMI agreed to provide DRM-free versions of its songs to the iTunes store.

Comcast is sending letters to their highest-usage high-speed internet customers, warning them to cut down on bandwidth usage or face a one-year banishment of the service. Comcast, which has resisted offering tiered service options of different speeds and prices, reserves the right to restrict usage because it can slow the service of nearby customers. The company has yet to define exactly what constitutes excessive usage, sticking with the old Potter Stewart definition of pornography, (“I know it when I see it.”)

Blog search and ranking site Technorati acquired The Personal Bee, a news aggregation site organized around buzz-worthy topics. Technorati tracks more than 72 million blogs and 230 tagged videos, podcasts and photos in real time. The Personal Bee allows members to create their own public or private pages based on news topics that interest them.

Apple
is delaying the launch of its new Leopard operating system by 4 months to reallocate resources to the iPhone project. The company had planned to release Leopard at its development conference in June. Developers will be given a beta copy instead.

Google
is hosting a 27-hour worldwide developer’s conference to promote the use of its products to build better web applications. “Google Developer Day” will take place at Google offices and offsite locations in Mountain View, Sao Paulo, Madrid, London, Paris Hamburg, Moscow, Beijing, Tokyo and Sydney beginning May 31.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

McClatchy Co.
walked away from its online advertising partnership with Tribune and Gannett to join a rival group of publishers currently negotiating a broad deal with Yahoo, according to The Wall Street Journal. The group is led by Hearst Corp. and MediaNews Group Inc. and includes 12 publishers that represent more than 250 newspapers in the U.S. The agreement would allow Yahoo and the paper sites to sell ads on each other’s websites and would create a national platform large advertisers can use to reach online consumers. A final agreement could be announced as early as this week, according to the WSJ. The publishing group already has an existing agreement with Yahoo’s HotJobs employment site.

Oxygen
struck a multiplatform sponsorship deal with Proctor & Gamble for the third season of Mo’Nique’s F.A.T. Chance premiering in July. Online elements include customized vignettes featuring Pantene products, banner ads and pre-roll video.

Brazil’s TAM Airlines will become the first airline to promote itself on Second Life. TAM will offer avatars incentives to take virtual flights to Second Life destinations such as Milan, Paris and New York–each representing cities the airline actually serves. Virtual TAM flyers will get frequent flyer points they can exchange for virtual gifts.

Lexus
is sponsoring a test drive patch application for Atari’s Test Drive Unlimited game, available at Xbox Live Marketplace. Players will be invited to choose between five different virtual Lexus models including the GS 450 hybrid luxury sport sedan to use in online races with other web-connected gamers. Atari is promoting the Lexus content via online trailers and community forums.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Google drew about 64% of U.S. search queries on the internet in March, according to Hitwise, gaining ground on Yahoo (21.3%) and Microsoft (9.2%) this year. ComScore Networks estimates Google’s market share at 48% as of February but pegs its global search share at 65.7%.

More than a quarter (26%) of advertisers with annual revenues of $50 million or more plan to increase search engine marketing spending by more than 25% this year, according to Jupiter Research. An additional 28% of advertisers will increase spending by 11% to 25% in the coming year.

Page views for newspaper websites increased 27% year-over-year during the second half of 2006 according to Newspaper Audience Data. Newspaper websites averaged 57.3 million visitors a month last year, over a third of all internet users.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

One of the better sites on the net for viral videos is a Vh1’s WebJunk.tv. It combines the blog format with the viral video category, lacing embedded video suggestions with personal commentary. The site was launched in 2006 as a companion to the on air Web Junk 2.0, which was out in front of the whole online video explosion. It also indexes the current top 5 viral videos from YouTube, Break.com, iFilm, Metacafe and Ebaum’s world. If you’re really into the wacky, weird, silly stuff on the net, this would be a good homepage for you.

A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
