Good morning. It’s Monday, April 15, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With an eye toward delivering international flavor to a fan base still hungry for sports, ONE World Sports continues to put an emphasis on global athletics. In February, the channel locked in a licensing agreement with the Nippon Television Network Corporation to bring Japan’s most successful baseball team, the Yomiuri Giants to millions of baseball fans in North America, supplementing a menu of soccer, badminton, golf, rugby and more on the schedule.
Last year, the company brought in Sandy Brown, former President of Univision Sports, to take the lead as President and CEO of the network. Cynopsis Sports spoke with Sandy about his vision for the channel and why the company is bullish on broadband distribution.
Brown on the state of ONE World Sports: We’re very excited about the opportunity and we’ve got an audience that is very interested in our product. When you combine what we are trying to do with ONE World Sports with the fact that ownership also owns the New York Cosmos, which is going to be another interesting opportunity here in the not too distant future, I think that it’s going to make for a very exciting future.
On his interest in the position: The most important thing is that the ownership group is made up of people that I know well. Obviously, you are in a role where you get to work with people you enjoy and that is always a big plus. There are also a number of members of my team that I worked with in my previous career, and that was very appealing. The second element of this is that I was very familiar with the content. Third, one of the most compelling elements of this is that have the chance to do a lot of the same things I did at Univision, and that is to have the chance to take a network and effectively rebrand it, recreate it and have the opportunity on the revenue side to work on the distribution front.
On the future of the network: In terms of the content, a lot of it is out of Asia, we have some content that comes out of Europe, but the act of the matter is that we are a global sports channel. We appeal to a whole range of viewers. Right now, we have over 2200 hours of live event content that we are putting on the air, and I’m sure we will be increasing that as we go forward. That is an important selling point and we are expanding on that. I think we are constantly looking to upgrade what we can do, and we are hoping to add some more content out of Europe and some more content out of Latin America.
On digital outlets: We are also very focused on having service available to people can access live content anytime, anywhere. We are adding to the team to make this happen. At the end of the day, you have to take one step at a time, the digital world is one where we think there is a lot of opportunity for us and we are trying to position ourselves in such a way that we can really take advantage of our content such that we can attract a varied audience. Being able to be across multiple screens is going to be a big plus for us.
With Tiger Woods blanketing headlines, CBS’ coverage of the Masters on Saturday got a boost as third round action drew a 6.3 overnight rating, according to Nielsen. That marks a nice 24% boost year-to-year.
ESPN opened the Masters on a high note, with increases for both Thursday’s and Friday’s telecasts. Thursday say an average of 2,851,000 viewers with a 2.4 household coverage rating based on fast nationals, according to Nielsen. That marks a 7% uptick in viewership over the comparable day in 2012, while ratings grew 3%. ESPN’s coverage also saw a 16% spike in the Male 18-34 demographic, averaging a 1.4 rating. Friday’s action saw ESPN draw an average of 4.2 million people to mark the highest-rated and most-viewed Friday coverage for the event on ESPN and the fourth-largest audience ever to watch golf on cable. The telecast earned a 3.5 household coverage rating, up 6% year-to-year, while viewership rose 4%.
FOX Sports is shifting the UFC’s The Ultimate Fighter off of FX and moving it to the upcoming FOX Sports 1 channel. The series is slated to return on September 4, featuring UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and challenger Cat Zingano as coaches, and will air on Wednesday’s at 10p to anchor FS1’s prime time UFC programming block.
ESPN is on deck tonight to carry the WNBA’s first-ever primetime draft telecast with the first round set to start at 8p on ESPN2, followed by the second and third rounds on ESPNU from 9-10:30 p.m. The telecast of the Draft will take place for the third straight year from Studio E with Kevin Negandhi as host and joining analysts Rebecca Lobo and Carolyn Peck and reporters Holly Rowe and LaChina Robinson. Production will include the debut of new WNBA logo on all graphics and animations that will be used through the upcoming season.
Tomorrow, the SEC and ESPN are set to finally announce details of the upcoming SEC network in Atlanta, with the channel expected to carry. The outlet is expected to launch in August of next year with headquarters set in Charlotte.
In a move to bring baseball and softball back to the Olympics, the international federations of the two sports agreed to merge to form the World Baseball Softball Confederation. The creation of one shingle is expected to boost the odds of both sports returning to the Olympics for the 2020 Games, after sitting on the sidelines since 2008.
Apparently, MIP international TV news is still haunting me, as Friday’s piece on PBR should have read RFD-TV, not RDF. My apologies.
Sold out! See you at the Cynopsis: Sports Media Awards on Wednesday. The event takes place at Yale Club in Manhattan. Click here for more info.
