Good morning. It’s Monday, April 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

A Pixar animated short titled Presto, will be featured in front of studio’s animated feature film Wall-E, when the movie opens June 27, 2008, according to Cartoon Brew.  Directed by Pixar animator Doug Sweetland, Presto revolves around an old time magician and the rabbit.

Boomerang celebrates Earth Day with 12-hour marathon of Captain Planet and the Planeteers on April 19, 8a-8p.  The marathon will feature 27 episodes of the animated series (1990-96) that specifically focus on continuing environmental issues.  Earth Day takes place each year on April 22.

The Mathcounts Foundations debuts its web site, www.mathcounts.org , today as part of its ongoing 25th anniversary.  The newly designed site features content for Mathletes, coaches, parents, and alumni including forums for students, teachers and coordinators, calendars (regularly updated), critical thinking skill centric problems, video highlights, a Ones To Watch area, VolunteerMatch, as well as a blog hosted by the Executive Director, Lou DiGioia.

India’s La Vision Animation Pvt Ltd launches the new kid6-14/parent/teacher targeted edutainment web portal, Buzziboy.com, per www.exchange4media.com.  The company plans to take the portal to mobile and interactive DTH platforms, as well as various SMS-based content.  The site will feature e-comics, value-based games, cartoons, Klub and e-Mart, and so on.  La Vision Animation is a division of The Anil Nanda Group.

HarperCollins Children’s Books launches the new publishing imprint Balzer & Bray.  The imprint takes its name from Co-Publishers, Alessandra Balzer and Donna Bray.  The two officially join HarperCollins as of May 5, 2008 and will report to Kate Morgan Jackson, SVP and Associate Publisher, HarperCollins Children’s Books.  Balzer and Bray have worked together for a dozen years, with both most recently toiling for Hyperion Books for Children, where Balzer was Executive Editor, and Bray as Editorial Director.

This week marks the American Library Association’s 50th anniversary of National Library Week, April 13-19.  Themed “Join the circle of knowledge @ your national library,” the year’s honorary chair is entertainer/author Julie Andrews, who is featured in a series of TV and radio Public service Announcements celebrating the week (and seen here ).  Each year on the Thursday of National Library Week is Support Teen Literature Day, which is sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services AssociationTeen Read Week 2008, this year themed Books with Bite @ your library, will be celebrated, October 12-18.

MARKETING/LICENSING

BBC Worldwide taps Underground Toys as the North American and UK licensee for the sci-fi series Torchwood.  Torchwood is a spin-off of Doctor Who, and shares the same creators.  Under the pact, Underground Toys will serve as the international distributor of existing Torchwood products as well as the manufacturing of new product lines (e.g. mugs, key chains, plastic replica items, laying cards and resin busts) in the US and UK, with products slated to available beginning this summer 2008.  Additionally, in the US Underground will also oversee distribution of action figures and Minimates.  Underground also distributes the Doctor Who product lines in the US.  Torchwood airs on BBC2 (UK) and BBC America (US).

The ups and downs of teen spending across a range of categories is the subject of the 15th semi-annual Taking Stock With Teens, a nation-wide retail survey that tracks the buying and brand preferences of US teens published by Piper Jaffray.  This most recent research finds that teen spending on fashion was down about -20% on a year-to-year basis, this reduction in teen spending prompted prompting the use of the term “discretionary recession.”  Findings from the report include:

  • According to the survey 41% of teens total budget went towards fashion categories, spending overall for the group is down compared to the past several years.  Further more, calling this a “transition phase” in fashion, Jaffray’s Sr. Retail Research Analyst, Jeff Klinefelter, believes, “we have not yet hit bottom.”
  • Perhaps more interesting is the findings in the digital media category, where 61% of teens surveyed reported downloading music illegally, down only a bit from 64% at the same time last year.
  • Teen girls are spending more in the beauty category over fall 2007.
  • The top five brands among students in the school survey is basically the same from last fall, including: Hollister; West Coast Brands (e.g. Pacific Sunwear, Volcom, Quicksilver, Zumiez); American Eagle; Abercrombie & Fitch; and Forever 21. With Hollister topping the girl list, and West Coast Brands for teen boys.

Euro Disney S.C.A. appoints Philippe Gas as President, Euro Disney S.A.S., the management company of Euro Disney S.C.A. and Euro Disney Associes S.C.A., which operates Disneyland Resort Paris.  Beginning officially on September 1, 2008, Gas will take over for Karl Holz, who has been named President, New Vacation Operations, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.  A 17-year Disney veteran, Gas is currently EVP/Human Resources, Diversity & Inclusion, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts worldwide.
