Cynopsis: Kids!
04/12/10

Good morning. It’s Monday, April 12, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Rainbow set unveil its new Winx Club 3D feature film at MIPTV this week and has signed several new TV and licensing deals for its series PopPixie.

  • This week in Cannes Rainbow will present Winx Club 3D Magical Adventure, the new and second Winx Club new feature and the first movie to be produced in Italy using 3D stereoscopic technology, will be released in Italy for back-t0-school 2010, and then roll0ut throughout Europe and the rest of the world.  The first movie, the CGI animated Winx Club: The Secret of the Lost Kingdom, was released in Italy in November 2007 and grossed US$8 million.
  • PopPixie (52×13) has been acquired by broadcasters Teletoon (France), and TVI and Canal Panda (both in Portugal) and Alter TV (Greece).  Rainbow’s newly completed license deals include: Bandai as the master toy license for Europe; Leomil for footwear in Europe, apparel for Iberia and Scandinavia; Carel apparel in France; Mirtillo for high-end fashion in Italy.

MORE KIDS STUFF

HIT Entertainment‘s new CG animated Bob the Builder series, Bob the Builder: Ready, Steady, Build!, launches today on CBeebies (UK) at 8:40a, and will air weekdays at that time.  In addition to a new look, the new Bob the Builder series features the team’s new home Fixham Harbour and new characters including Scratch.  Bob the Builder: Ready, Steady, Build!, has already been sold to 21 countries.  A new DVD The Legend of the Golden Hammer will be released next month.

Aardman Rights heads into MIPTV with several pre-sales completed for its new family-targeted series Wallace & Gromit present A World of Invention (6×30).  The series, which is hosted by Wallace and Gromit and looks at real gadgets/inventions around the world, has been acquired by DR (Denmark), YLE (Finland), Thai PBS and ABC Australia. Wallace & Gromit present A World of Invention is commissioned by BBC One, which will debut the show from late 2010.  The series will also feature a corresponding invention-centric website and online campaign.

France’s Cyber Group Studios has entered into three CGI animation program development deals and has also inked distribution deals, per C21 Media.

  • On the development side, Cyber Group is teaming with Disney Playhouse channel in Europe to develop the preschool property Zou (52×11), which is based on books about a young zebra by Michel Day.  The studio is also partnering to develop the short-form animated series Mademoiselle Zazie (52×7, or 11-minute episodes) for France Televisions, which is based on books by Thierry Lenain and Delphine Durand.  Additionally the studio is working with Teletoon to develop Academy Royale.  An original concept from Cyber Group and Korea’s Sieun Design, Academy Royale follows three tween princesses in a talent competition.
  • Cyber Group picks up the international distribution rights (excluding France) for the flash animated series Grenadine and Peppermint (78×7), which is produced by Patoon Animation for TF1, and Nina Patalo (39×7), a comedy produced by Je Suis Bien Content for France Televisions.
  • Additionally, Cyber Group Chairman and CEO Pierre Sissmann says that the company will move into live-action series deals with a new development deal with UK-based Helion Pictures for three projects, Sea Hunters, Jet Set Juniors and Hut Thirteen.

twofour54, the Abu Dhabi government’ media and entertainment creative content initiative, inks a deal for its mixed CGI animated and live-action series Driver Dan’s Story Train with ABC Television (Australia).  ABC Television’s ABC For Kids is slated to launch the Arabic/English-language preschool series later this year.  Produced under a partnership between twofour54 with UK-based 3Line Media, Driver Dan’s Story Train launched on CBeebies (UK) in January 2010.  The upcoming Arabic version of the series is being produced by UAE-based Blink Studios, with creative supervision by original series producer 3Line Media.

Cake Entertainment completes a package deal comprised of 80 hours of kids-targeted animated programming with ABC TV (Australia), for air on its ABC1 and its new K5-12 aimed digital channel ABC3 (6a-6p).  Under the deal the Australian broadcaster picks up Fresh TV’s tween-targeted series Stoked (52×30), Total Drama Action (26×30) and Total Drama World Tour (26×30, and special 1×60), in addition to renewing rights for Coolabi’s King Arthur’s Disasters and Star Farm’s Edgar and Ellen (26×24).

Beyond Distribution is appointed as the worldwide distributor of the new BBC/CBeebies preschool series Iconicles (26×30).  UK-based Create Media Ventures and US-based phuuz entertainment produce the mixed 2D animated and live-action series.  Beyond will launch the title to international buyers at MIP Junior this year.

CJ Entertainment and ToonBox Entertainment ink international broadcast deals for the 3D HD animated series Bolts and Blip (26×22).  Targeted to K7-11, the ToonBox Entertainment and RedRover produced animated series has been pre-bought by ABC (Australia), Teletoon (Canada), KBS (Korea) and TV3 (Spain).  KBS and Teletoon are set to debut Bolts and Blip beginning this summer.  The series was previously acquired by Canal + (France), which will launch the series this spring.

Elastic Rights inks a broadcast deal for National Geographic‘s preschool series Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies with Alter Channel (Greece).  Alter Channel plans to premiere the preschool series in fall 2010.  Elastic Rights is currently in conversations for home entertainment and publishing deals for the property in Greece.  Additionally, Elastic Rights has completed a deal with Disney Home Video to launch the Mama Mirabelle series DVDs in Italy, with the first title releasing on April 21, 2010.  Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies is a co-production of National Geographic Kids Entertainment, BBC/CBeebies and King Rollo Films.  Elastic Rights holds the TV, home video and merchandising and licensing rights to the property in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Turkey.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Portfolio Entertainment enters into a DVD and home entertainment licensing pact for its new animated series The Cat In The Hat Knows A Lot About That! with Roadshow Entertainment for Australia and New Zealand.  The agreement grants Roadshow Entertainment the DVD and home entertainment rights to the first season (40×30) of the series for the territories.  Based on Random House’s Beginner Book collection, The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library, The Cat In The Hat Knows A Lot About That! series is produced by Portfolio Entertainment and Collingwood O’Hare Productions, in association with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, Random House Children’s Entertainment, Treehouse and PBS Kids.
