Good morning, it’s Monday, April 12, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

During his public unveiling of the multitasking iPhone 4.0 OS last week, Steve Jobs admitted that Apple is “directly targeting” Google with the launch of the iAd platform in June, which will focus on serving ads within the platform’s robust 185k application environment. Criticizing existing current rich media and search-based mobile ad solutions, he said the key to iAd’s success will be the ability to serve actionable ads without having to leave the app you’re using. Assuming privacy concerns can be addressed, the iAd platform will also allow advertisers to find out where users are and supply ads relevant to their current location. Apple will sell and host the ads `- which can appear as mini-applications that offer free content such as movie trailers, casual games or wallpapers – while developers will retain 60% of the revenue generated.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Online movie rental service Netflix agreed to a 28-day window delay when releasing Twentieth Century Fox movies and TV shows via DVD and streaming. Netflix made a similar arrangement, designed to preserve the DVD sell-through market, with Warner Bros. earlier this year.
 
Following up on record streaming results during March Madness, CBSSports.com reported larger-than-ever streaming numbers for its online Masters coverage focusing on select holes. A total of 556,090 unique visitors (+133% from last year) watched 392,901 hours of live video on Thur. (+71% vs. 2009). Tiger Woods, daily partner K.J. Choi and Matt Kuchar were the “featured group” on Friday – a new a feature this year – tracking their play from holes 10-18. 4.9 million viewers tuned into ESPN’s coverage on Thur., a record for golf on cable.
 
Gracenote and Univision Interactive Media reached an agreement to provide users with the ability to access and search for authorized Spanish-language song lyrics from Gracenote’s lyrics service.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Twitter made its first client software acquisition, purchasing iPhone client company Tweetie from developer Loren Brichter for an undisclosed amount. Tweetie is one of the more popular iPhone Twitter apps currently retailing for $2.99 that allows users to track and categorize incoming tweets. Tweetie will be renamed “Twitter for iPhone” and made available for free on the iTunes AppStore in the coming weeks.
 
Babelgum struck an exclusive series deal to distribute Vamped Out, the directorial debut of actor Kevin Pollak (Usual Suspects, A Few Good Men) on its online and mobile Comedy Channel. The first of 6 episodes premiers today, with each additional episode airing Monday for the next five weeks. Cinematographer Robert Legato, who won a Visual Effects Academy Award for “Titanic,” is helping Kevin with the special effects.
 
Minneapolis-St. Paul-based KSTC-TV is reporting success with the first year of its sports-themed 45.grandstadium.tv site, which provides live-streaming of Minnesota State High School League Tournaments, including Volleyball, Football, Dance Team, Wrestling, Girls’ and Boys’ Hockey and Basketball. KSTC-TV says it recorded over 2.1 page views and 102k unique visitors. The site generates revenue by selling ads and DVDs of games and highlights.

Speaking of targeting consumers for marketing practices, the FTC says it is carefully reviewing consumer group complaints leveled at Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and others regarding the real time targeting, profiling, mining and tracking of users’ surfing and purchasing habits, according to a statement. The Center for Digital Democracy, U.S. PIRG and World Privacy Forum are asking the FTC to require companies to get consumers consent before collecting and sharing data from them.
 
Millennial Media
CEO Paul Palmieri for one applauded Apple’s iAd solution but refuted Jobs’ characterization of current mobile ad solutions. “The fact is that sentiment on the speed of this market’s innovation is already high among advertisers and agencies alike,” he wrote in a blog post. “Rich and engaging creatives became the norm in mobile over the past 12-18 months, and have exceeded the impact of online ads.”
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
The WGA, East reached a tentative agreement with ABC covering WGAE-ABC news employees. The pact, subject to approval by the WGAE Council and ratification from covered members, covers approximately 250 newswriters, editors, desk assistants, production assistants, graphic artists and researchers in national and local television and radio in New York and Washington. 
 
The Justice Dept. is looking into the hiring practices of several top tech firms including Google, Intel, Apple and IAC/Interactive Corp. to address anti-trust concerns, per the WSJ. Tech companies are believed to collude in setting wages and compensation levels for certain positions including computer programmers.
 
BlackBerry creator Research In Motion is acquiring Ottowa, Ontario-based QNX Software Systems from parent Harman International. QNX has developed an open platform operating system that is deployed across multiple business sectors including automotive, industrial, telecommunications, medical, defense, and aerospace.
 
Nokia acquired Cambridge, MA-based MetaCarta Inc., an expert in geographic intelligence solutions. MetaCarta’s technology will be used in Nokia’s local search in location product and other services.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
A new study from Yahoo, conducted by DBS, identifies a new sports-obsessed species for marketers to focus on. The “Uber Sports Fan” vertical, made up of 15 million consumers, are engaged in sports throughout the year, spend significant time on key sports sites (like Yahoo’s fantasy destination Rivals.com) and show a “strong likelihood” to purchase products advertised on these sites. More about the “Uber Fan”:

  • they spend an average of 14.1 hours/week on sports websites and are most engaged with peripheral areas of sports sites such as blogs, stats, fantasy sports and draft info
  • they spend 39% of their free time on sports
  • Are early adopters and key influencers, with demonstrated purchasing power
  • 25% have a household income of over $100K+
  • 47% say they tend to advocate a great new product to everyone they know
  • 45% agree that online shopping is a great way to buy products

 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Zodiak Entertainment is launching two new “Age Guessing” entertainment apps for Facebook and the iPhone in May, forerunners to its primetime show, The Age Guessing Game, recently launched by Zodiak’s Mast Media. In the style of hit website ‘Hot or Not’, the Facebook app will enable users to find out how old other Facebook users think you really are. The iPhone app will feature the Facebook game and enable users to “Age” their face. Part of company’s first cross-platform entertainment package, the app was developed by Neo Network, Mast Media and the group’s internal creative and business development unit Grand Zentral.
 
Twitter also announced it first official free client app for the BlackBerry, which allows users to direct tweets as they arrive, attach photos or links to messages and set up directories to follow specific friends or categories of interest.
 
NAB attendees can help navigate the show this week with the help of some smartphone apps. A free iPhone/iPod Touch app, powered by Core-apps and sponsored by StreamTheWorld, allows you to import your schedule from the NAB website, export Tweets, access push alerts and view interactive maps that link to info screens of individual exhibitors. The app, without the interactive map functions, is also available for the BlackBerry. (Sorry, no GPS location tagging.)

New York-based online semantic ad targeting company Peer39 had named Andy Ellenthal as its new CEO. Andy previously served as the CEO of quadrantONE and has held positions at DoubleClick and PointRoll.

Many of the web’s top producers of content including Funny Or Die and Koldcast TV have completed integrations with Boxee in part to reach viewers on their plasmas. (If you’re a Boxee user, you were able to watch The Streamys last night on your web-connected TV.) Now producers large and small have an easy way to reach this tech savvy audience. 360-degree social video platform Kyle has completed an integration with PC-to-TV application creator Boxee to allow its videos to appear within the Boxee PC/Mac app and within Boxee-powered over-the-top TV systems, including the upcoming Boxee Box from D-Link demoed at CES. Kyle’s App Framework enables fully-brandable content to appear in Boxee’s Apps directory. The integration gives content producers access to Boxee’s next-generation sharing functionality and rating system, which allows users to recommend video apps to friends both inside and outside of the Boxee cult with one click sharing buttons to Twitter and Facebook. Completing individual integrations is a tedious, time consuming process for producers so this deal should help the platform attract more mainstream content. Forward-looking media brands have already shown interest. MLB.TV completed an app allowing users to subscribe to out-of-market games via Boxee last June and the app just received a makeover adding DVR functionality and multi-game view.
