Good morning. It’s Monday, April 11, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Disney teams with Shanghai Shendi Group to break ground on the Shanghai Disney Resort, the first Disney theme park in Mainland China. With construction under way, the new Shanghai Disney Resort will be set on 963 acres in Pudong, Shanghai, featuring Shanghai Disneyland (a Magic Kingdom-style park), themed attractions and hotels and an 11 acre green space at its center, and is slated to open in about five years. By comparison, the Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida is set on 30,000+ acres. The Disney Shanghai Shendi Group joint venture will see an initial investment of US$4.4 billion to build the theme park and other aspects of the resort. The investment amounts will be split between Disney and the Shanghai Shendi Group with Disney holding 43% of the shares of the owner companies and the Shanghai Shendi Group holding the remaining 57%. Financing will be proportional to ownership. In addition, a joint venture management company will be formed with Disney having a 70% stake and Shanghai Shendi Group having a 30% stake. The management company will be responsible for creating, developing and operating the resort. At the groundbreaking ceremony Robert Iger, President and CEO, Disney said that the Shanghai Disney Resort would be “authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese.”
Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures revealed yesterday that Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road, Boardwalk Empire) will take on the role of General Zod in director Zack Snyder’s new Super movie, Man of Steel. Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers. Man of Steel will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
