Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 9, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) Europe acquires Iceland-based Latibaer, which owns and operates the preschool LazyTown brand and will produce a new season of LazyTown.  Under the deal, Magnus Scheving, creator and star of LazyTown, remains CEO of Latibaer and retains his management team, and the series will continue to be produced in Iceland.  The acquisition furthers TBS’ expansion in the preschool arena in EMEA.  Earlier this week TBS rolled out its Cartoonito branded preschool programming block across EMEA.  Turner’s expanding presence in the EMEA territory currently sees Boomerang and Cartoonito brands available in 22 languages in 125 million households.


Portland-based animation studio Laika options Wildwood, the debut kid’s novel by Colin Meloy, who is also the lead singer/songwriter for The Decemberists, and featuring illustrations by Carson Ellis, which is published by HarperCollinsBalzer + Bray imprint.  The first book in a middle grade fantasy series, Wildwood is set in an alternate version of modern day Portland, Oregon, and revolves around Prue McKeel and her friend Curtis’ mission to rescue her younger brother who has been abducted by crows and taken to an enchanted and forbidding forest where nobody has ever gone, or if they have they haven’t come out.  Laika, which is best known for its animated feature film Coraline, is currently in production on the 3D stop motion animated movie ParaNorman.

Your Family Entertainment (YFE) inks a deal with the production company Nova Entertainment for The Moorhuhn  Movie, a family-targeted feature film based on Moorhuhn (aka Crazy Chicken), the popular German computer game character.  The Moorhuhn  Movie will be produced by Nova Entertainment Cinema in cooperation with Your Family Entertainment and interactive software publisher Phenomedia.


Zodiak Kids launches a new 11-minute spin-off version of the CBeebies (UK) mixed animated/live-action preschool series Waybuloo.  The new Waybuloo format includes a narrative element, with each episode featuring popular UK narrator David Lamb (Come Dine with Me).  Zodiak Kids will showcase the new Waybuloo format at MipJunior next month.  Waybuloo is produced by The Foundation, part of Zodiak Kids and Decode Entertainment for the BBC.  Zodiak Rights holds worldwide rights in all media for the property, with the exception of Canada where Decode Enterprises handles broadcast and home entertainment rights, and DHX Licensing represents consumer products rights.  Decode Enterprises and DHX Licensing are both subsidiaries of DHX Media.

Disney Channel (US) acquires a third season of the preschool series Chuggington from Ludorum for its Disney Junior programming block and the its upcoming Disney Junior basic cable and satellite channel set to launch in the US in 2012.  Season three of the CGI animated series is comprised of 13×30 episodes.  The series is currently airing daily as part of the Disney Junior block  weekdays at 7:30a and weekends at 6a.

The animated series Martha & Friends, which features a 10-year-old, problem-solving Martha Stewart, will premiere the new 30-minute special Back-To-School online today at and on Hallmark Channel this Monday, September 12, 9:30a (check listings).  The episode features several educational projects for kids for the new school year.   Created by A Squared Entertainment in collaboration with Martha Stewart and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Martha & Friends is a multimedia property comprised of 26 original short-form webisodes that air bi-weekly on via AOL Kids.

The Hub premieres the second seasons of two of its series.  The second season of the preschool series The Adventures of Chuck & Friends, based on the Tonka Chuck & Friends brand, premieres this Monday, September 12 at 11a, while season two of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic debuts Saturday, September 17 at 9a.  Additionally, new episodes of Transformers Prime debut from Saturday, September 10 at 7p.

Moonscoop inks deals for the CGI-animated preschool series SamSam in the UK, Spain and Australia.  Seasons one and two (52×7 and 39×8) have been acquired by ABC (Australia) and Turner Broadcasting in Spain for its Boomerang and Boing channels, with CiTV (UK) taking the second season of the TVFI export series. These deals follow recent sales in Italy to Rai and Turner Broadcasting Italy.  SamSam is produced by Bayard Jeunesse Animation with Araneo, Tiji, Gulli and France 5, and distributed worldwide by Moonscoop.


Hasbro is set to attend New York Comic Con for the first time in NYC, October 13-16, where it will feature both its current and upcoming products its brands including Transformers, G.I. Joe, Jem and the Holograms and KRE-O, and Beyblade, Marvel and Star Wars lines. Hasbro will host panels for several of its properties and action figure lines, and will also serve as the title sponsor of New York Comic Con’s NYCC Kids!, which will be held Sunday, October 16.  Additionally, the toy company will host the National Beyblade Championship (for K8-13) at the event, the US winner will go on to the Beyblade World Championship, which will be held in Toronto, Canada in March 2012.

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) teams with McDonald’s for a Ben 10 Ultimate Alien Happy Meal, currently available in North American restaurants through September 15.  Consumers that purchase a Ben 10 Ultimate Alien Happy Meal will receive one of six different translucent figures based on aliens from the series with a Ben Tennyson figure inside.  The promotion is supported by in-store, on-air and online elements.

Footwear company Stride Rite Children’s Group introduces the Sesame Street by Stride Rite collection, featuring Sesame Street characters including Elmo, Oscar, Abby Cadabby among others.  Stride Rite’s Sesame Street footwear collection promotes healthy foot development and includes several options within the Stride Ride Scientifically Tested Everyday Proven (STEP) System: STEP 1 Robeez by Stride Rite Pre-Walker; STEP 2 SRT Soft Motion Early Walker; STEP 3 SRT Toddler Off & Running.


Lionsgate and Tiger Gate Entertainment appoint Wendy Reeds as EVP/Sales and Distribution.  Based at Tiger Gate’s Hong Kong headquarters, Reeds will head up Tiger Gate’s content sales efforts and will also direct Lionsgate’s film and TV sales and distribution operations in Asia.  She will also identify new Asian film projects and manage the marketing and distribution of Tiger Gate’s new productions.  Reeds will report to Tiger Gate CEO William Pfeiffer and Lionsgate International President Helen Lee Kim and Lionsgate Television’s Peter Iacono.  Prior to this Reeds was VP/International and Home Entertainment Sales, Lionsgate in LA.  She previously toiled for Paramount Vantage International and Fabrication Films.  A partnership between Lionsgate, Saban Capital Group and Tiger Gate Management, Tiger Gate operates two pay TV channels, KIX and Thrill.  The company is the exclusive distributor for Lionsgate feature films and TV content across Asia.


Cartoon Network‘s animated series Adventure Time hit an all time series high with the premiere of a special episode featuring Neil Patrick Harris on Labor Day, Monday, September 5, 2011 at 8p, among kid and boy demos 2-11, 6-11 and 9-14.  The episode was drew 3.3+ million total viewers and helped make the network’s Monday night lineup (7-9p) to its best performance for 2011-to-date among total viewers.  The episode also delivered year-to-year gains for the time period across kid, tween and boy demos:

  • Kids 2-11 (1,844,000) an increase of +28%; Kids 6-11 (1,429,000) up by +25%; and Tween 9-14 (1,316,000) increased by 73%
  • Boys 2-11 (1,283,000) was up in the time period over last year by +23%; Boys 6-11 (1,063,000) grew +23%; and Tween Boys 9-14 (949,000) was up +61%
