Good morning. It’s Friday, September 8, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has signed Ellen DeGeneres to host the 79th Academy Awards ceremony, which will air on ABC, Sunday, February 25, live from LA’s Kodak Theatre. This isn’t just Ellen’s first time hosting the Oscars, it will also mark her first time attending the event. That said, award shows aren’t new to DeGeneres – she was the host of the Primetime Emmy Awards in 1994 and again in 2001.
Tonight’s Premieres:
Fox: Nanny 911 at 8p
ABC: 20/20 at 10p
The season debut of FX’s Nip/Tuck drew in 4.8 million total viewers on Tuesday night at 10p, down from last season’s 5.3 million viewers for the fall premiere. Among A18-49, the show averaged 3.4 million viewers, and tho down from last year (3.7 million A18-49 for 2005), it was the most viewed basic cable season premiere so far this year.
After the huge sampling of Tuesday night, the Katie Couric ratings have simmered down a bit. Wednesday night’s CBS Evening News with Katie Couric drew in 10.13 million total viewers, making it #1 for a second night in a row, despite being down 25% from the inaugural evening the night before. Both ABC and NBC were also down from Tuesday night — ABC down 6% with 7.11 million viewers, and NBC down 10% with 7.04 million viewers. Among A25-54, CBS’ Evening News captured a 2.7 rating, down 31% night to night.
National Geographic Channel is serving up a different twist in the home improvement genre with its latest program The Scrap House. Premiering September 18 at 10p, The Scrap House will document the architects, engineers, designers and scrap artists involved in building a house in San Francisco made entirely of trash and left over building materials all in four weeks. Everything from old phone books to computer keyboards will be recycled for this project. The show is produced by Winton/duPont Films for the National Geographic Channel.
Court TV will premiere its new series On The Run next week, September 12 at 11p. This one-hour series will track the stories of the most wanted criminals in the Americas and the authorities who work to bring them to justice.
BBC America has acquired three new series which will be introduced in early November:
- No Angels, premieres November 5 at 10p: A new primetime soap centering on four young nurse friends, who to their patients and other co-workers act like angels at the hospital, but after hours they play hard to cope with the stress of their jobs. Ten one-hour episodes produced by World Productions Ltd., and distributed by Channel 4.
- Vincent, premieres November 6 at 9p: Starring Ray Winstone as a former policeman who now acts as a private investigator, working outside the law at times to catch criminals. Four ninety-minute episodes from ITV Production and distributed by Granada.
- Paparazzi, premieres November 8 at 9p: A documentary series that follows paparazzi photographers as they stalk celebrities in exotic locales throughout the world. Featured movie stars and royalty include Gwyneth Paltrow, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Keira Knightly and Prince William. Seven one-hour episodes from BBC Production and distributed by BBC Worldwide Americas.
In their first joint effort, NPR will broadcast Ted Koppel’s live town meeting that is scheduled to air on the Discovery Channel this Sunday evening. Around the country, some NPR stations will simulcast the Discovery Channel special live on September 10 beginning at 930p, while others will air a one-hour version during the week of September 11. A 30-minute show beginning at 9p, hosted by Talk of the Nation anchor Neal Conan, will set the stage for the ninety-minute special. Set at Discovery’s headquarters in Silver Spring, MD, Koppel will focus on the status of national security and civil liberties in the U.S. Koppel currently has a dual role as Managing Editor at Discovery to produce documentaries and town meetings for his series Koppel on Discovery, in addition to being Senior News Analyst on NPR where he contributes segments for Morning Edition, Day to Day and All Things Considered.
CBS midseason comedy Rules of Engagement has added Bianca Kajlich to the cast, playing opposite Oliver Hudson as a young newly-engaged couple. The series is from Sony Pictures TV, Happy Madison Prods and CBS Paramount Network TV.

Friday Fun Fact: Many fish cough. Sneeze? No, not so much, but cough, absolutely. I’m thinkin’ it’s an algae allergy.
The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1966-The first episode of “Star Trek” is aired on NBC. Despite the enduring popularity of the show and its many spin-offs, it was not popular in its own time, placing only as high as 52nd among all TV series in its best season. Originally given a five-year mission, the Enterprise‘s intrepid crew fought Klingons, outwitted Romulans, and Captain Kirk’s torn tunics. But the crew was helplessly overmatched by NBC executives, who decided to boldly cancel the show and the mission after just three seasons.

IN RE: UPCOMING SEASON OF SURVIVOR
Regardless of whether you personally agree or disagree with CBS’ decision to separate cast members by race, one thing should but apparent (especially by the people getting this e-mail daily who are obviously “in the business”). This is about generating revenue. Mark Burnett can claim that this is a sociological experiment of sorts, but here is an interesting fact: CBS is the same company that fired Jimmy “the Greek” Snyder (and rightfully so) for his statements that “The black is the better athlete”. Now it seems that CBS wants to capitalize on the same racism that they once distanced themselves from.
JL/ New York
Survivor is trying something new. Whether it’s for ratings or just to try something new, I think it’s an interesting idea. I’m sure many people (networks) have thought about it and continue to think about it but no one wants to be the first to actually do it.
As an American with Mexican heritage, I find no insult nor do I see anything wrong with it. Many complain that there are not enough people of color on TV ~ which I do agree and am available if you need me Mr. Mark Burnett ~ and, here, Survivor is putting different people of color on this show and they happen to put them in groups according by race. I bet if they had made groups of mixed races (1 of each for each group) there would have still been heads spinning with this idea as well. Survivor would not have been able to win one way or another…
Long story short, if you don’t find it “right” for such a think on this show DON’T WATCH and create your own show.
I give Burnett and his team big props!

IN RE: CBS AFFILIATES CHOOSING NOT TO AIR 9/11 SPECIAL
I had to respond to today’s e-mail exchange. 9/11 is not only a day of great sadness in this country, it’s my birthday so maybe I take all this a bit more to heart than others. How dare some Americans try to sanitize an event that changed this country forever? What? The firefighters were supposed to say “Golly gee, now there’s a mess, what shall we do first?” We should all be more upset over the loss of lives (that day and in the current war) than what’s on our television sets.
After over 20 years in the television business I’m still flummoxed by viewers who don’t understand that they have always had the final say in what is or isn’t on their television, it’s called the off button, or if that’s too extreme for them, the channel selector.
Proud to work for a CBS affiliate, and a locally owned television station, (no large pockets to pay the FCC fine if levied)

IN RE: CBS EVENING NEWS WITH KATIE COURIC
At last, an intelligent reason to watch the CBS Evening News. A 1:30 segment with Rush Limbaugh! That leaves 20:30 for Ms. Couric. That’s considered “fair and balanced” to the pious members of management at CBS News.
