Cynopsis: DIGITAL

9/07/07

Good Morning, it’s Friday, September 7, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The new fall season is ushering in some experimentation. ABC Entertainment and Warner Bros. TV struck a new kind of digital deal that gives ABC.com the rights to stream four WB-produced shows airing on ABC for up to four weeks after they air.  ABC gets to keep the ad revenue generated during the first year, then WBTV gets the rights to stream episodes of Pushing Daisies, Men in Trees, Notes from the Underbelly and Big Shots the following year on multiple outlets (with the ABC brand attached). Warner Bros. can also sell downloads of the shows a year after they originally air. The arrangement is a twist on the usual arrangement that gives production studios the digital sell-through rights and networks revenue from ad-supported streaming.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Warner Bros. Entertainment is creating a video site to act as a portal for archived and new animated works of Warner Bros. Animation, Looney Tunes, Hanna-Barbera and DC Comics. Slated to launch next spring, T-Works will kick off with two exclusives – a Batman short-form series and a project based on The Wizard of Oz – and will feature the latest in web 2.0 interactivity. Users will be able to create avatars, earn redeemable rewards, network with other fans, make custom cartoon mash-ups and chose from over 125 games to play.

ESPN launched two new original football-themed programs for ESPN.com and ESPN Mobile TV. Countdown Daily presented by IBM, hosted by Trey Wingo, gives ESPN.com visitors a 12-15 minute daily rundown of what’s happening in the NFL, featuring reporting and analysis from the Sunday NFL Countdown and NFL Live crews. Fantasy Football Now, launching on Sunday at noon ET on both ESPN.com and ESPN Mobile TV, provides last-minute fantasy advice.

MTV‘s latest reality show – A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila – is built around the dishy, scantily clad singer who is reputed to have the most friends in the history of MySpace (2,009,335 at last count). The 10-episode elimination-format dating show is slated to premiere on October 9.

TAG Networks‘ casual games-on-demand channel, TAG, has become the newest programming service to join ICTV ActiveVideo Distribution Network. ActiveVideo is a network-based platform enabling broadband media to be distributed through television.  TAG’s genres include puzzle, arcade, card games, word, trivia, sports, and kids games.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and MTV announced a new digital journalism grant program, awarding “Young Creators” up to $500,000 for compelling ideas using digitally delivered news to enhance communities. MTV will promote the award throughout its international networks. The Knight News Challenge awarded grants to 25 separate projects this year. Newschallenge.org invites users to comment on individual entries.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Here’s a first. After being barraged with hate mail, Apple CEO Steve Jobs posted an open letter on the Apple homepage apologizing to all the early adopters who forked over $600 for the new iPhone, only to see the price drop $200 after just two months. Jobs is promising a $100 store credit to anyone who bought one at an Apple or AT&T store. Now let’s see if he drops a line to Wall Street analysts, who are nervous that the iPhone will end up on the Apple scrap heap along with the Newton and the Pippin.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based Vudu.com is launching yet another movie download device designed to skip having to transmit titles from the PC to the TV. Vudu will sell a WiFi-enabled set-top box (retailing for $399 from the end of this month) that is preloaded with the first few minutes of 5,000 movie titles. This allows users to select then instantly begin watching pay-per-view movies while the rest of the file downloads from the internet. The Vudu site contains a bandwidth test to check if your connection is fast enough to support the service.

Self-publishing site Lulu.com is suing NBC Universal/News Corp. online video joint venture Hulu.com for trademark infringement and unfair trade practices. Apparently the company is afraid that potential publishers will end up going to Hulu.com accidentally and have so much fun that they forget what they were looking for in the first place.

Microsoft unveiled a new suite of online services dubbed Windows Live, designed to compete with Google’s growing selection of web-based applications. A beta version of the package, including email, IM, a photo suite and blogging software, is available for free in a single download at http://get.live.com/wl/all. Microsoft also announced a $50 price cut on its subscription-based mp3 player the Zune.

Amazon.com is rolling out the latest digital eBook device called The Kindle next month, according to The New York Times, enabling users to wirelessly purchase and download full books from the Amazon site. Meanwhile, Google plans to start charging users for full online access to digital copies of some of the books in its archives, allowing publishers to set the prices they want to charge. (Of course Google will get a cut.)

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

CBS Corp. is acquiring in-store programming and ad company SignStorey for $71.5 million in cash. The company, to be renamed CBS Outernet, operates digital video displays in more than 1,400 grocery stores across the U.S., offering advertisers the ability to target by region and daypart. Johnson & Johnson, Colgate, General Mills, and Dannon are among the company’s top consumer package goods advertisers.

Cox Television will launch a new digital sales division on Oct. 1 to market and sell online advertising for the 300+ stations currently represented by Cox’s three national sales rep. firms – TeleRep, Harrington Righter & Parsons and MMT Sales. Cox Cross Media, to be based in New York, will sell across multiple platforms and try to attract national advertisers.

Video ad network Tremor Media and Videopinons creator ExpoTV launched a new ad vehicle embedding user generated product testimonials across Tremor’s network. The companies will distribute ExpoTV’s homemade product reviews over a network of more than 800 websites.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Top magazines websites are relying more and more on video and other web 2.0 features to attract users, according to a new report from the Bivings Group. Video usage nearly doubled in 2007 among the top 50 magazine sites, with 60 percent now offering video content. Sixty-four percent offer RSS feeds, 18% offer “most popular” features and 34% include content for mobile devices.

BarackObama.com is leading all other presidential hopefuls in attracting unique users, according to Nielsen/NetRatings, registering 717,000 visitors in July. HillaryClinton.com was second with 437,000 visitors. Fred08.com was tops among Republican sites with 381,000 uniques. Democrats are also dominating on YouTube, with their politically-themed videos attracting 475,000 unique visitors in July compared to 275,000 for Republicans.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Comcast’s G4 upped Robert Juster to VP/New Media and Interactive. In his new role Robert will oversee content production, publication and promotion for all web, broadband, video-on-demand, mobile and interactive content, reporting to Josh Krane, SVP.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The new College.com is betting that Facebook users (and advertisers trying to reach them) aren’t happy about the fact that anyone can now get on the network. Like Facebook, College.com users can create profiles, aggregate content and network with friends, but the service is only open to users with an .edu email address – like Facebook used to be in the old days of 2006. The site has some interesting collegiate-themed features such as a service that allows students to rate their profs. There’s even a wake-up call feature you can set to ring your cell phone after a particularly hard night of partying or during a blind date you may want to duck out on!
