The smallest screen in the business, YouTube, is launching its first film celebration with the YouTube Buffer Festival. Canadian YouTube star Corey Vidal and his ApprenticeA Productions are producing the festival in Toronto, Canada from Nov. 8 to Nov. 10, at the same time as the mega Toronto Film Festival. “Buffer” will consist of 50 feature-length shows with themed screenings, as well as premieres from YouTube celebs. Vidal was one of the first to join the YouTube Partnership program, and his videos have viewed more than 67 million times.
Multiplatform entertainment network Crackle has released its first original feature film, Extraction. The film stars Jon Foo from Tekken, Falk Hentschel from White House Down, Sean Astin from The Lord of the Rings and Danny Glover from Lethal Weapon. The latest Vanity Fair digital short, H8DES was released on the magazine’s YouTube channel Thursday. Directed by Don Cheadle, the short depicts trends of the 1980s, and is the latest in a collection of ten designed to celebrate the magazine’s 100th anniversary. In addition to Cheadle, Bryce Dallas Howard is following in dad Ron’s footsteps, directing the 1960s entry.
Seems that Yahoo has echoed YouTube’s latest move by presenting a new logo. More straight-edged with all caps and a slender font, the logo is a result of trial versions that were put in front of Twitter users last month. This is Yahoo’s first logo redesign in 18 years and reflects the changes Marissa Mayer is making to the brand as the new CEO.

Battery life and privacy are the top concerns of mobile device users, according to a TRUSTe annual Consumer Data Privacy Study. The study found that 46 percent of mobile device consumers cared most about battery longevity, 30 percent about privacy, and the phone’s brand, weight and camera each trailed at less than ten percent.
In other words: Privacy is the most crucial issue here, because lack of it resulted in a consumer’s lack of willingness to download an app, which has revenue repercussions. Additionally, only 38 percent of people are willing to share their personal data such as location and contacts – for free apps and services.
Twitter still takes the title for most influential “Social TV” app in the market against competitors like GetGlue, Viggle, Miso and IntoNow. Digiday points out that Twitter reaches almost 600 million users; its top competitors are GetGlue’s four million and Viggle’s three million.
In other words: Twitter recorded 24 million tweets during the 2012 Super Bowl alone, and its recent acquisition of TV analytic company Trendrr indicates that the social media giant plans to cash in on its mega audience even further.
Today from IFA Berlin: Philips has unveiled a new Cloud TV app, which gives users access to hundreds of TV channels over the Internet, and the ability to store personal media on the brand’s smart televisions. The app was designed for Philips smart TV models that were released in 2012 or later… Sony launched its over-the-top video player, Video Unlimited 4K. The service will offer 100 titles for rent or purchase on select Sony 4K TV sets. The company also undraped its first curved LED flatscreen TV. It’s selling for $4000, substantially less that the Samsung version, which goes for $9000.
The humor site most known for its LOLcats photos, Cheezburger, has made former Yahoo and Microsoft exec Scott Moore the new president and COO. Moore is expected to expand the brand as well as lead it into the digital entertainment business ventures, the company said.
Entertainment media and lifestyle PR agency The Lippin Group promoted Donald Ciaramella to president of corporate communications. He was previously the company’s EVP of corporate communications.
Mobile advertising company Amobee has bought real-time mobile ad bidding platform developer Gradient X. The acquisition means that Amobee will be able to offer companies the option to make ad purchases through platforms including video and HTML5 with bidding prices marked in real time. Tech Crunch reports the deal’s price tag could be in the ten million dollar range.

LiveU is offering a new platform called LiveU Connect, which will allow broadcasters to access live video content on any web browser through mobile devices. The platform will help them “control their entire LiveU ecosystem via a single browser-based interface and integrate it with existing newsroom tools,” LiveU stated. It will be demoed during the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam, September 12-17.

“We don’t care where you watch,” CBS President and CEO Leslie Moonves said on Wednesday’s CNBC’s Squawk Box. As long as you do watch, of course.
