Television audience estimate results from Wednesday, night three of the 2008 Republican National Convention per Nielsen featuring the acceptance speech of Vice Presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin, include a combined total viewer number of 37.2 million over six networks offering live coverage from approximately 10-11p: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX News Channel and MSNBC. The combined total among A18-49 viewers was 14.1 million. Fox News Channel led the way among all the networks with 9;2 million viewers from 10-11:15pm; followed by NBC with 7.7 million, CNN with 6.2 million, ABC 5.7 million, CBS 4.6 million and MSNBC with 3.4 million. PBS aired its coverage of the RNC Wednesday night from 8-11p and drew in an average of 3.2 million total viewers per PBS National Projections. The Weather Channel swept up approximately 65 million unduplicated viewers during three days of Hurricane Gustav coverage from last Saturday through Monday. According to Nielsen/NPower, TWC reached the highest cume of any cable TV network for this period. The Tuesday night premiere of the final season of The Shield on FX drew in 2.1 million viewers, down a bit from the April 2007 premiere of season #6 with 2.2 million. Sons of Anarchy debuted on FX Wednesday night at 10p (opposite the RNC coverage) and it drew 2.5 million total viewers with 1.5 million A18-49. Wednesday night’s two-hour season premiere of America’s Next Top Model on The CW at 8p pulled in a 3.0/9 among W18-34; a 2.9/9 with females 12-34 and a 2.8/10 with female teens. SCI FI Channel’s season opener of Ghost Hunters Wednesday at 9p drew in 1.7 million viewers for both A18-49 and A25-54 and 2.7 million total viewers. Following at 10p, Destination Truth debuted with 995,000 A25-54 viewers, 977,000 A18-49 viewers and 1.7 million total viewers. ABC ordered a new unscripted pilot, The Shark Tank from Mark Burnett, according to THR. The Shark Tank will be produced by Sony Pictures Television and is based on a Japanese competition format called Dragon’s Den which just completed its sixth run in the UK. Mike Kelley, creator and executive producer of CBS’ Swingtown signed a new two-year overall pact with CBS Paramount Network Television, reports THR. As part of the new deal, Mike will develop a one-hour edgy relationship drama called BiCoastal for Showtime which will be co-produced by Hazy Mills Productions. TNT has a spinoff of The Closer series in the works, per THR. A script order has been approved and The Closer creator/executive producer James Duff is involved as co-writer along with Adam Belanoff and Michael Berchem. The proposed spinoff will also be produced by Warner Bros. Television and Shephard/Robin Co. Duff and Belanoff will executive produce the project with Michael M. Robin and Greer Shephard. Speaking of spinoffs, Showtime plans to feature Leisha Hailey in a pilot spinoff of The L Word. Ilene Chaiken, creator/executive producer of The L Word will write and produce the new project with production slated to begin this December. The sixth and final season of The L Word, about a group of gay and straight women living in an upscale Los Angeles neighborhood will air in January. Air America Media tapped Ron Reagan for a new program called The Ron Reagan Show on weeknights from 8-9p starting next Monday. Ron’s new show will follow The Rachel Maddow Show which airs weeknights from 6-8p. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Comcast is calling foul on the FCC’s network management ruling drawn up to put a stop to its bandwidth throttling practices. Comcast filed a suit against the commission yesterday to try and block the commission’s 3-2 decision to sanction the MSO on the grounds the agency acted in a “legally inappropriate” manner. The FCC’s decision marked the first time it officially ruled on the Net Neutrality issue. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The Chicago Public Schools has begun distributing the first issue of TheMash, a new weekly newspaper produced by the Chicago Tribute and primarily written by students, to its 100,000 high school students in its school system. Verizon Wireless has signed on as a presenting sponsor for TheMash. TheMash will cover a range of news and entertainment stories relevant to Chicago teens, with the student contributors trained and guided by members of the Chicago Tribune team. The newspaper is supported by a corresponding website at http://www.themash.com , which will feature much of TheMash content and where students can post stories and photos and interact with other students. The Chicago Tribune also publishes RedEye, a newspaper targeted to readers 18-34, which launched in 2002. Full edition: CYN KIDS. CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: London’s Digital Rights Group (DRG) is expanding its reach into North America with the launch of Digital Rights Group America, headed up by Lee deBoer as Chairman. Reporting to London-based CEO Jeremy Fox, Lee will work on company growth in the region, producer and broadcaster collaborative development and new programming distribution acquisitions for DRG and its C4i, Portman Film & Television, iD Distribution, Zeal Entertainment, Click TV and i-Rights companies. DRG America will also expand the service it already offers producers based in the U.K. and internationally.
