Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 5, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Chicago Public Schools has begun distributing the first issue of TheMash, a new weekly newspaper produced by the Chicago Tribute and primarily written by students, to its 100,000 high school students in its school system.  Verizon Wireless has signed on as a presenting sponsor for TheMash.  TheMash will cover a range of news and entertainment stories relevant to Chicago teens, with the student contributors trained and guided by members of the Chicago Tribune team.  The newspaper is supported by a corresponding website at http://www.themash.com , which will feature much of TheMash content and where students can post stories and photos and interact with other students.  The Chicago Tribune also publishes RedEye, a newspaper targeted to readers 18-34, which launched in 2002.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Lawless Entertainment, a production and distribution consulting company, signs new rep agreements including one with Andy’s Airplanes LLC for its CG animated preschool property Andy’s Airplane.  Under the deal with Andy’s Airplanes, Lawless will develop an animated series and secure financing partners and worldwide distribution.  Additionally, Lawless enters into a deal with Literal Media (f/k/a AEHC) to develop Literal Media’s properties for feature film or TV production in partnership with international production companies, broadcasters and other entities.  Literal Media has a library of 6000+ literary properties from noted authors, including the likes of Noel Coward, Oscar Wilde, Preston Sturges, William Faulkner, Damon Runyon, Somerset Maugham, Zane Grey, Maurine Dallas Watkins, Robb White and Cornell Woolrich and really tons of others.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney plans to release famed anime writer/director Hayao Miyazaki’s newest movie from Studio Ghibli, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, in the US next year, per Time.com.  The movie was screened last weekend at the Venice Film Festival.  Like Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, Ponyo revolves around a young goldfish (Ponyo) who wants nothing more than to be human.  Ponyo is befriended by a five-year-old boy who saves her when she washes up on a shoreline, after running away from home.  Meanwhile Ponyo’s father calls upon the sea to find and bring her home eventually bringing about a confrontation between father and daughter and ultimately (not going to tell you everything) bringing about tumult in the water and creating a tsunami and a test the young fish must pass to remain human.  Ponyo on the Cliff was released by Toho in Japan on July 19, 2008.

British Gas, a UK provider of energy, has signed on to fund ITV’s new CiTV channel’s short-form series, Green Up Your Life (10×5), which aims to educate kids about green living, according to Brand Republic.  Launching this fall, the series will showcase teams of kids competing to win the title of eco ranger as they take on environmental challenges (e.g. recycling, saving water). Meanwhile Green Up Your Life will support British Gas’ school and community outreach initiative, Generation Green.  The Green Up Your Life shorts will also be supported online content and a modified version of the Green Generation game called Professor Green and the Eco-Rangers will be available on www.citv.co.uk, www.itv.com and www.popcorn.co.uk

Mondo Media launches Ka-Pow!, a new animated action series based on its popular animated series Happy Tree Friends, online this week at www.happytreefriends.com.  The series animation is produced by Ghostbot AnimationNeither series is meant for young kids, really teens and up.  Ka-Pow! features new and favorite Happy Tree Friends characters and storylines.  The first episode in the series bows this week, followed by the second on September 23, and the third on November 4.

Paramount Pictures Digital Entertainment acquired Seattle-based Screenlife LLC., maker of the multiplatform movie trivia game Scene It?. Screenlife has sold around 15 million copies on DVD, mobile, video on demand and consoles since its launch in 2002.

Cartoon Network’s live-action made for TV CGI animated movie, Ben 10: Race Against Time, premieres in the Asia Pacific this month on Cartoon Network’s Australia/New Zealand and Philippines feeds on September 20, and on the Southeast Asia feed on September 26.  The movie’s premiere in Malaysia marks the launch of Cartoon Network’s first programming block in Bahasa Malaysia (the official Malaysian language), in addition to English and Mandarin languages, via their Astro service.

Decode Enterprises completes program sales deals for six animated series in Greece, a new territory for the distribution arm of DHX Media:  Greece’s Channel 9 acquires the preschool series Franny’s Feet (39×22); the motion capture preschool series Bo on the Go! (40×22); seasons one and two of King (52×22); Olliver’s Adventures (39×22); What Bout Mimi (39×22); and Watership Down (39×22).

Entertainment Rights sings distribution deals for several series around the world.

  • Picking up the animated series George of the Jungle in new deals are Nickelodeon (Spain), TV Globo (Brazil), Cadena Ecuatoriana (Ecuador), MBC (Middle East), Alter Channel (Greece), TV4 (Sweden), Noga TV (Israel), Modern Times (Greece), and Leader Music (Latin America) Mega (Chile) and America TV (Peru).
  • Casper’s Scare School expands with acquisitions by Germany’s ZDF, KIKA and Cartoon Network, as well as by Cartoon Network (Asia Pacific), TSR (Switzerland) and Luis Foes (Portugal), Cartoon Network Latin America, and HVN (Singapore).
  • Taking the preschool series Finley the Fire Engine are National Geographic (Latin America), Disney (Australia), ECTV (Ecuador), Telemundo (Puerto Rico), Luis Foes (Portugal), and Spacetoon (Indonesia).

Xilam heads to Cartoon Forum, in Ludwigsburg, Germany on September 16-19, where it will screen its new family-targeted animated comedy Mr Baby (48×4).  Currently in production in Paris, the short-form series has already been picked up by France 3 (France).  Set in the family kitchen, Mr Baby follows a precocious 15-month-old who has the sharp wit and vocabulary of a 50-year-old misanthrope as he makes outrageous demands and still finds a way to maintain loveable qualities.

4Kids Entertainment will offer the new animated series Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D (52x3o) at Mipcom 2008 next month in Cannes.  Set in a futuristic society, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D (5 Dragons), is produced in HD by 4Kids Entertainment and is the ninth series in the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise.

STONE SOUP

CastingBriggs Digital Media is seeking videogaming teens, specifically those who with lots of Grand Theft Auto experience, for its new action/adventure series, Game Over, which is being directed by Oscar nominated Bobby Garabedian and will be shot in LA.  The breakdown includes four characters: Dakota – built like a refrigerator, but with a baby face (a la Seth Rogen at 15-yrs-old); Frank  a kid who keeps to himself and is a computer genius with extensive knowledge of videogames; George  a sensitive looker; Sam  an Asian character who is both quick-witted and unpredictable.  But  move quickly submissions will only be accepted through tonight, Friday, September 5, at 11:59p at www.cinsay.com.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Francesco Sedita is named VP and Publisher/Grosset & Dunlap and Price, Stern Sloan.  He is to be responsible for the business and publishing strategy and overseeing editorial direction of the lists for both imprints, which focus licensed properties as well as original novelty and paperback books (e.g. Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Disney’s Club Penguin, Mad Libs, Mr. Men and Little Miss and series including Hank Zipzer).  Most recently Executive Creative Director/Scholastic, Sedita will report to President/Penguin Young Readers Group, Don Weisberg.

Robert Desatnick is named SVP and CMO/Feld Entertainment, Inc.  Desatnick will be responsible for developing and implementing marketing and advertising programs across Feld’s brands for the creative promotions of Feld’s productions, including public relations, advertising, relationship marketing and web development.  Desatnick previously helmed Cadbury Schweppes’ Global Confectionary Group.

The Toy Industry Association (TIA) appoints Edward Desmond as its EVP/External Affairs, effective October 1.  Based in Washington, DC, at least initially, Desmond will serve as the voice and representative of the toy industry in the legislative and regulatory arenas.  Additionally, he will also oversee the TIA’s continuing efforts to address legislative challenges of the toy industry at the state level.  Desmond joins TIA from the Entertainment Software Association where he was SVP/Government Affairs.
