Cynopsis: DIGITAL

09/05/08

Good morning, it’s Friday, September 5, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Comcast is calling foul on the FCC’s network management ruling drawn up to put a stop to its bandwidth throttling practices. Comcast filed a suit against the commission yesterday to try and block the commission’s 3-2 decision to sanction the MSO on the grounds the agency acted in a “legally inappropriate” manner. The FCC’s decision marked the first time it officially ruled on the Net Neutrality issue.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

NFL.com kicked off football season last night streaming the Giants/Redskins matchup live, produced in partnership with NBC and powered by Adobe. The video quality was decent, offered in 16×9 format, and the presentation featured some impressive next-generation interactive features including the ability to switch between 4 live camera feeds – each with picture-in-picture capabilities.

If Hulu and the new TheWB.com have whetted your appetite for more Buffy the Vampire Slayer adventures, you’ll soon have the opportunity to really immerse yourself. Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising and The Multiverse Network, Inc. announced they are developing a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) based on the Buffy universe. Perhaps to free up resources for the project, Fox also announced it is putting development of the previously announced Firefly MMOG on the back burner.

Popular vlogger Brigitte Dale (TV Squad, Stylelist) has landed a gig with ABCFamily.com to produce her own video blog covering news, pop culture and “what’s on every twenty-something girl’s mind.” Stage 9 Digital Media will produce.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Professional social networking service LinkedIn struck a deal with CNBC under which the network will feature content and tools from the site on CNBC.com and gain the ability to target ads to LinkedIn’s 27 million user base. In return LinkedIn gets to feature content from CNBC including text, articles and blogs, financial data and video content.

In the continuing how-to online video tradition Metacafe will feature Easy To Assemble from Sept. 22, a new web comedy spoofing training videos featuring well-known celebrities demonstrating products from the Burbank IKEA store (a sponsor.) The show is created by and stars Illeana Douglas and features guest appearances by Jeff Goldblum, Tom Arnold, Craig Bierko, Kevin Pollack, Greg Proops, Robert Patrick, Justine Bateman and Ed Begley Jr. It will be featured on co-producer SMX’s channel on Metacafe.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Microsoft is slashing the price of the Xbox 360 to better compete with its cross town rival. Beginning today the base model will drop to $199, down from $279 and $50 cheaper than the Nintendo Wii. The mainline Xbox 360 (60 GB) drops to $299 and the Xbox 360 Elite (120 GB) will now go for $399. By comparison the 80 GB Sony PS3 sells for $399.

The Sony Reader launched in the UK in a content partnership with Waterstone’s, Britain’s biggest book chain. The ebook, first released in the U.S. in Sept. 2006, boasts Sony’s “elink” technology – charged microcapsules suspended within a fluid that draw very little battery power. (The company says readers can get 6,800 page turns on a single charge.) Meanwhile version 2.0 of the Amazon Kindle is not due out until next year, despite earlier reports.

Let’s hope this is a trend – the less junk in the living room the better. Gaming gear maker ezJam has come out with a Combo Guitar Controller for the Wii that works for both music videogames Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Available in early October, a slider button on the side of the guitar allows you to toggle back and forth between the games.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Cablevision opened additional access zones for its planned New York region-wide Wi-Fi internet service in most business districts of Nassau Country as well as all Long Island Rail Road stations and parts of Suffolk. The Wi-Fi service is already available on the Port Jefferson ferry line and in commercial zones in Sag Harbor, Northport and Huntington.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Looks like the other shoe dropped for NebuAd. A day after the resignation of its CEO Bob Dykes the behavioral targeting company suspended plans to deploy its controversial technology, according to The Washington Post.

While JohnMcCain.com continues to generate more online video views than its rival site (2.1 million through June vs. 612,000,) BarackObama.com is winning the online advertising battle, according to a new study from ComScore Ad Metrix. During the first half of 2008, the Obama campaign consistently displayed more online ads than the McCain campaign, averaging nearly 92 million exposures per month compared to approximately 7 million per month for McCain. In recent months, Obama’s online efforts have ramped up even more with 150 million exposures in May and 244 million in June.

Media Networks
(MNI) introduced a new online tool for media buyers allowing visitors to identify custom geo-targeted, multi-platform advertising packages by submitting basic demographic, geographic and industry-specific criteria.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Nearly one-fifth of online U.S. households now watch TV episodes online according to a new TNS study – double the viewership from just two years ago. Official TV network homepages and YouTube were named as the top two destinations and streaming was the preferred method of consumption, used by 68% of viewers vs. 38% who took advantage of free downloads. Among consumers connecting to online broadcasts, 43% tune into the news, 39% watch drama shows, 34% view sitcom/comedy shows, 23% watch reality shows, 16% view sports and 15% view user generated content.

Google’s Chrome browser fared well during its first day in release, according to Hitwise, reaching #12 in its Computers & Internet Software category out of over 2,500 total sites. Chrome actually surpassed Mozilla on Tuesday (which ranked #19) in terms of market share of visits.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Aaron Kohn was appointed GM of the new National Geographic Mobile division, extending NGV’s mission into mobile programming and games. He will lead the global rollout of the division as well as overseeing strategic direction, technology advancement and marketing for all National Geographic mobile initiatives. Aaron also serves as VP/Corporate Strategy & Development for National Geographic Global (NGGM.)

Lee deBoer
was appointed Chairman of Digital Rights Group America, the London-based independent distributor’s foray into North America. Lee will report to CEO Jeremy Fox back in London.

ActiveVideo Networks added another executive to its ranks appointing Jason Harvey to VP/GM of Programming Strategy and Operations. He joins ActiveVideo from Google, where he oversaw new media strategy and management and online sales in Latin America. Jason reports to Ed Forman, EVP/Products and Services.

Digital arm of MediaCom Beyond Interaction announced that Patrick Bonomo will lead its search operations group, called Beyond Interaction Search. BI Search provides Beyond Interaction and MediaCom clients with search specialist expertise as part of overall communications planning and buying services.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

BlueHaze (as in that wave of smoke which lingers over the mosh pit at a live show) is a new live music-themed social networking site intended as a resource for fans before, during and after live concerts. Launching this week after 4 months of beta testing, BlueHaze is a handy resource for keeping you up to speed on what’s going on in the live music scene in your town. Log on and your browser figures out where you’re based in order to determine what’s playing in your city. (The site’s new iPhone app accomplishes this via GPS-based geotargeting.) What’s more, the software will scan your iTunes collection then automatically alert you when your favorite bands come to town. Partnerships with ticket vendors like Ticketmaster and Stub Hub allow users to purchase tickets directly from the site; a fan-to-fan resell portal is also planned to help those looking for a miracle. All in all, BlueHaze is a cool concept. Its social networking tools – so far limited to photo posting – need work. But founder Mark Shedletsky says captioning and Twitter integration are coming soon. While acknowledging the stiff competition in the social music space, the former MTV and BitTorrent executive figures that focusing on the live concert side of the business will prove to be a valued niche for potential ad partners. In the works for BlueHaze is a plan to add media to the site – live recordings of concerts available minutes after a show wraps.
