Cynopsis: Kids!

09/03/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 3, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nickelodeon inks a deal with Italy’s Rainbow, under which Nickelodeon picks up the Winx Club TV rights for the US and the pay-TV rights for Latin America, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Benelux, which includes the Winx Club series and two theatrical movies.  The deal will also see Nickelodeon and Rainbow co-develop and co-produce seasons five and six (26 episodes each) of Winx Club, which will launch on Nickelodeon US and internationally (with the exception of Italy) in 2012.  During 2011, Nickelodeon will introduce Winx Club with 4×60 animated specials based on the first two seasons of the girl-targeted action/fantasy animated series, as well as episodes from seasons three and four.  Additionally, Nickelodeon also acquires all merchandising rights to Winx Club within the US, Latin America, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Benelux.

MORE KIDS STUFF

MarVista Entertainment acquires the worldwide distribution rights to the new primetime fantasy/adventure miniseries, The Witches of Oz, which it will debut to broadcasters at MIPCOM this fall.  Targeted to families, the two-part TV movie offers modern take on L. Frank Baum’s Oz story and will feature an all star a cast including Christopher Lloyd (Thicker, Jack and the Beanstalk, Back to the Future trilogy), as the Wizard of Oz; Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings trilogy, Rudy, The Goonies); Billy Boyd (Lord of the Rings); Lance Henrikson (Millennium, Alien), Mia Sara (Timecop, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator), Ethan Embry (Empire Records, Can’t Hardly Wait), as well as Sasha Jackson (Blue Crush 2, One Tree Hill); Eliza Swenson as Billie Westbrook, and Paulie Rojas as Dorothy Gale.  The Witches of Oz is written/directed by Leigh Scott, Executive Produced by Christopher Campbell of Palace Imaginarium and produced by Eliza Swenson and Campbell.

Camelot Entertainment enters into a broadcast deal with ABC Family for its classic animated series Puff The Magic Dragon (1×30).  Under the deal ABC Family takes the domestic rights and will air the special as part of its annual 25 Days of Christmas on-air programming event this December 2010.  The special is based on the eponymous song by Peter, Paul and Mary.

Cookie Jar Entertainment with Brainstorm Communications and SyncTV launches the Jaroo apps for iPhones/iPads, which will be followed by an Android app, a mobile version of Cookie Jar’s kid-targeted streaming video site Jaroo.com ( www.jaroo.com ).  The Jaroo app debuts with 50+ full-length episodes of Kid-aimed series including The Doodlebops, Strawberry Shortcake, Johnny Test, Inspector Gadget and Super Mario Bros.  Brainstorm designed the apps and SyncTV will handle all distribution and content management.

Kidtoons Films, a division of Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp, will feature Barbie  A Fashion Fairytale in matinees at 155 Kidtoons theaters nationwide this month beginning this Saturday, September 4, 2010.   National Amusements Theaters will offer Barbie  A Fashion Fairytale for only the weekend of September 11-12.  A full list of participating theaters can be found at www.kidtoonfilms.com .  Kidtoons is also celebrating its 6th birthday.

Correction: GDC China along with Village Productions UK and Agogo Hong Kong are partnering on the new preschool CGI animated series Patch Pillows.

Friday Fun Fact:
ABC’s Head of the Class, which ran from 1986 through 1991 and starred Howard Hesseman, was, surprisingly, the first American entertainment TV series ever to film an episode in Moscow, Soviet Union. A few TV news programs and specials, such as Candid Camera in 1961, had preceded it.
