Good morning. It’s Friday, September 30, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Lucas Cruikshank returns as teen Fred Figglehorn, a character he created online, in the new two-hour TV movie Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred, premiering on Nickelodeon, Saturday, October 22, at 8p. Part of Nickelodeon’s Halloween celebration, the new TV movie, a sequel to the 2010 TV movie Fred: The Movie, follows Fred on his new mission to expose his new music teacher, Mr. Devlin, who also happens to be dating Fred’s mom, as a vampire. Cruikshank recently launched his latest digital chapter in the life of Fred on YouTube with the new six-episode web series, Figgle Chat. Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred also features Ariel Winter (Modern Family), John Cena (WWE) and Daniella Monet (Victorious). The movie will be supported by a new site (www.nick.com/fred) where viewers can also find information and facts about the movie, take quizzes, and screen exclusive footage of Fred, as well as behind-the-scenes footage, clips and photos. Following the premiere, Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred will launch in a dedicated category on Nickelodeon’s VOD.
Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) and SBS Media Holdings (South Korea) enter into join TV venture including Nickelodeon Korea, the first specific kid targeted channel to be offered as part of the SBS cable and satellite channels, per Variety. The deal will also see MTV Korea branded as SBS-MTV, and it will run both international and local music and youth-centric programming from SBS Productions and MTV. Together, VIMN and SBS will also produce original Korean-language programming, including kid’s content, and which can be distributed on Viacom platforms across Asia and elsewhere in the world. Nickelodeon Korea and SBS MTV are slated to launch in December 2011. SBS will handle advertising and affiliate sales, and consumer products rights for both networks, with VIMN representing the joint venture outside of Korea.
Saban Brands‘ Samurai Power Rangers are offering Halloween safety tips as part of a new multi-platform safety campaign that aims to reach parents and kids everywhere (school, movie theaters, online, and at home) through public service announcement videos. The effort will also feature additional activities for the Power Rangers empower fall 2011 initiative, which encourages families/kids to live healthier and more active lives. The Halloween safety videos featuring Power Rangers Samurai will run in movie theaters nationwide before PG and G-rated movies. Special posters that underline trick-or-treat safety and guidelines will be distributed 5,000+ elementary schools. Halloween tips, videos, activities, games and resources will be available online at PowerRangers.com/Halloween (www.powerrangers.com/halloween) throughout October. The Power Rangers will also reach out to parents/kids via parenting blogs, entertainment websites, and gaming portals. Power Rangers Samurai airs on Nickelodeon.
Teletoon Canada gives the go ahead to Skywriter Media and Entertainment Group for the new animated comedy Camp Lakebottom (26×30), which is expected to deliver in late fall 2012. Targeted to K6-11, Camp Lakebottom revolves around a group of rambunctious campers and their creep show counselors at most terrible summer camp ever and yet everyone seems to have a good time anyhow. Camp Lakebottom was created by Betsy McGowen and Eric Jacobson, and developed by Skywriter’s Meghan Davies and Teletoon’s Athena Georgaklis and Alan Gregg.
US Spanish-language network Vme welcomes the HD CGI animated series El Mundo de Rosie (Everything’s Rosie) to its daily four-hour preschool block, Vme Ninos, beginning this Monday, October 3 at 10:30a. El Mundo de Rosie was created and produced by UK-based indie producer/distributor V&S Entertainment with the support of Media Program of the European union.
Nelvana is celebrating its 40th anniversary and a new broadcast deal as it heads to Mipcom. Nelvana Enterprises new animated comedy series Scaredy Squirrel has been acquired by Disney Channel and Disney XD in Europe and other regions. The deal will see the new series launch in territories including France, Spain, Benelux, Germany, Greece, Turkey, CEE, Scandinavia, the Middle East, Africa, and Japan. Scaredy Squirrel is based on the eponymous kid’s book series by Canadian author Melanie Watt, and published by Kids Can Press.
Hasbro Studios, the production/distribution unit of Hasbro, completes sales for a number of kid-targeted programs across Europe.
- Lagardere (France) acquires My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (26×22) for Channel 7’s TiJi, which offers programming for kids seven and younger, as well as Transformers Prime (26×22) for its Canal J and Gulli services.
- Super RTL (Germany) picks up The Adventures of Chuck and Friends (52×11). Also in Germany, Nickelodeon takes My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Transformers Prime.
- Nickelodeon in the Netherlands acquires My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Transformers Prime, and Pound Puppies. VTM Belgium also picks up My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Pound Puppies for its kid-targeted channel Kazoom. Also GI Joe Renegades and Transformers Prime will run on the newly launched tween boy channel, 2B.
Amberwood Entertainment inks a license deal with ABC Australia to broadcast its new preschool CG animated series Rob the Robot (52×11). Amberwood’s Rob the Robot was commissioned by TVOKids (Canada). Also in Canada, SRC, Knowledge Kids, and Access have also signed on for the series. A co-production between Canada’s Amberwood Entertainment and Singapore’s One Animation, a second season (52×11) of Rob the Robot has already been ordered. The series is produced with support from the MDA, CMF, and the Shaw Rocket Fund.
CBeebies acquires 50 episodes of Zodiak Kids‘ new 11-minute spin-off version of the popular CBeebies series Waybuloo. CBeebies is the first broadcaster to pick up this new format, which Zodiak Kids will launch at MipJunior this weekend. As we previously mentioned, the new Waybuloo format features a new narrative element. In each episode, noted UK narrator, Dave Lamb (Come Dine with Me), narrates the stories. CBeebies will broadcast the new episodes of Waybuloo in 2012. The original Waybuloo series can currently be seen in 80 countries. Waybuloo is produced by The Foundation, part of Zodiak Kids and Decode Entertainment for the BBC.
Nickelodeon Latin America‘s telenovela Grachi (75×60) has premiered on the kid-targeted network RAI GULP (Italy), a division of public service broadcaster RAI Television Network. A second season of Grachi is currently in production in Miami and is expected to premiere on Nickelodeon Latin America in the first part of 2012. Comarex handles distribution for Grachi, and so far has sold the telenovela to 51+ countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, CostaRica, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela and 36 French speaking territories including France, Belgium and Switzerland.
The Hub is not wasting any time getting kids ready for Halloween with the season 2 premiere of R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series tomorrow, Saturday, October 1 at 8p. The debut episode, Creature Feature Part 1, stars Joel Courtney (Super 8). The new season will also feature guest stars including Frankie Jones (Jonas), Bailee Madison (Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Wizards of Waverly Place), Dakota Goya (real Steel) and Bobby Coleman (The Last Song). The Hub is also featuring a Haunt Your House Sweepstakes ( www.hubworld.com/hauntedhouse ), which runs October 1-11, 2011.
In other programming highlights, The Hub will air a series of four animated original specials, Secret Millionaires Club, which features investor Warren Buffet offering practical financial advice for teens. The first of the specials, which features a special guest appearance by entertainment and business entrepreneur Jay-Z, is set to premiere on Sunday, October 23 at 1p. The Secret Millionaires Club is produced for The Hub TV Network by A Squared Entertainment and Andy Heyward, former CEO of DIC Entertainment, and Xing Sing Digital animation studio.
Additionally, Secret Millionaires Club (26×30) series is headed for Mipcom where A Squared Entertainment and distributor Your Family Entertainment (YFE) will offer the series to international broadcasters. The series is designed to educate kids/tweens about finance. In addition to the long-form series, also available is a series of short-form webisodes (26×3-4 minutes), as well as a website ( www.smckids.com ) featuring games and activities.
The Fremantle Corporation unveils season four of the live-action kid’s series A World Of Wonders ( www.aworldofwonders.tv ). A World Of Wonder that takes viewers around the world to learn about its many cultures, sounds, flavors and colors. In this new season the cast explores a glacier in the Swiss Alps, goes gorilla trekking in Rwanda, snorkeling with sea turtles in the Greek Islands, and many other adventures. A World Of Wonders is produced by Genuine Pictures in association with TVOntario, the Show Rocket Fund and the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
Halloween comes to Disney XD in Canada this October with host three mysterious marathons, specials and scary movies. Disney XD OnDemand will also feature episodes from all three marathons. Additionally, Disney.ca will offer a variety of activities and games throughout the month.
- The network will air a monster-filled Phineas and Ferb marathon on Saturday, October 15 from 3p. The marathon leads up to the premiere of a new Phineas and Ferb episode at 7p, which features the voices of Anna Paquin (True Blood) as a girl obsessed with vampires and Michael J. Fox (Back to the Future, Spin City, Teen Wolf) as Werewolf Michael.
- A Kickin’ It 12-episode marathon airs Saturday October 22 from 2p and will culminate with a new Halloween episode of Kickin’ It at 7:30p
- DXD will also feature Monster Mayhem Marathons on two consecutive Mondays . Beginning October 24 at 3p, the network will feature Halloween-themed episodes through the rest of the day, including new episodes of Kick Buttowski Suburban Daredevil and Pair of Kings. Then on Monday, October 31, the scary programming begins at 6a running through until 3a the following day.
- October will also bring the Halloweentown movie series to Disney XD for the first time. The four movies in the series, Halloweentown, Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, Halloweentown III: Halloween High and Return to Halloweentown, will air throughout the month.
Family Channel (Canada) will feature Halloween on Fridays throughout October, including a special four-episode Wizards of Waverly Place story arc (entitled Apartment 13B) and mystery movies airing each weekend. Online at Family.ca ( www.family.ca ) viewers will also be able to play various holiday themed games and check out their ‘horrorscopes’ as well as enter a watch and win contest. On Friday, October 14, Family Channel will host a Halloween-themed Night of Premieres beginning at 4:30p and including new episodes of Phineas and Ferb, Wizards of Waverly Place, Good Luck Charlie, Shake It Up, Jessie, A.N.T. Farm and So Random!, and culminating with the movie Return to Halloweentown at 8p. The first two episodes in the four-part Wizards of Waverly Place Apartment 13B will debut on Friday October 14 and (4:30p) and 21 (5p) respectively, with all four episodes (the initial two and two premiere episodes) will then air back-to-back on Friday, October 28 at 8p, followed by Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie. Family Channel will also feature frightening flicks each Friday night at 8p and Saturdays and Sundays at 12p, including all four Halloweentown movies, Twitches, Twitches Too, Roxy Hunter and the Horrific Halloween, Roxy Hunter and the Mystery of the Moody Ghost and Under Wraps. Additionally, the Wizards of Waverly Place Apartment 13B episodes will be available OnDemand beginning October 28.
