CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

09/30/05

Good morning.  It’s Friday, September 30, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The New York Mets new cable network, SportsNet New York, will kick off next spring in New York with 125 regular season Mets games, as well as preseason games, the majority of which will be provided in high-def. The regional sports network will be carried on Comcast and Time Warner Cable in NY, NJ and Connecticut, as well as sections of Pennsylvania and upstate NY. Negotiations are ongoing with other cable and satellite service providers.  But baseball isn’t the only game on this channel – starting next fall SportsNet NY will also carry some Big East and Big 10 basketball and and football games, as well as evening and morning sports news programming.

According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, the Automotive industry spent more than $6.7 billion in advertising during the first six months of 2005, up more than 7% over the same period a year ago. Of that $6.7 billion, nearly 80% was spent on television advertising: 23% on network TV, 14% on cable, 39% on spot, and the remaining on Spanish-language and syndicated TV.   The lion’s share of the cable revenue came from Ford with a cable budget of $136 million, Volkswagen with $35.5 million and Honda with $71.3 million.

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC
     Hope & Faith at 9p (1 hour)
FOX     Malcolm in the Middle at 830p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *HGTV has four new series launching in the next two months:

  • My First Place debuts on October 22 at 9p, with each episode highlighting the ups and downs of first-time homeowners, with a designer to assist.
  • Double Take kicks off on November 11 at 9p and creates inexpensive copies of high-end designer rooms thru ingenuity, smart shopping and hands-on projects.
  • FreeStyle premieres on November 18 at 930p and will re-vamp ordinary rooms using a variety of no-cost design methods
  • Look What I Did! debuts on November 21 at 9p and features regular folks doing very cool things to their homes without any extra assistance.

Many more new series will kick off in 2006 including World’s Most Extreme Homes, International House Hunters, I Have No Taste, and What’s Your (DE)Sign?

Emmis Communications will sell four more TV stations for $259 million to Blackstone Group and SJL Broadcast Group. Last month Emmis announced it was selling nine of its stations for a total price of $681 million.  The plan is to sell some or all of its television properties to pay down debt and then purchase radio properties.  The four stations being sold are in Honolulu, Portland OR, Wichita and Topeka. Emmis’ 2nd qtr net income was down by 45% vs. a year ago, to $8.4 million.

If you saw the live premiere episode of Will & Grace last night, then you already know this, so never mind.  If you didn’t, then you may want to know Subway launched a new sandwich last evening.  Connection?  Rosario talks about the new chicken parmigiana sandwich on the show, soon followed by a Subway commercial airs announcing the new sandwich.  The tie-in was worked with WPP Group’s Mediacom and NBC.

Was your television set on at home an average of 8 hours and 11 minutes every day during the 2004-05 television season?  Nielsen Media Research reports that during the last television season, television sets in American homes were turned on more every day this previous season than in the history of television, up from 8:01 the previous year, and nearly a 13% increase over the average a decade ago. As to people in those homes, as individuals we were watching on average four and a half hours of television every day – the highest level in 15 years. Interestingly, the biggest chunk of that viewing doesn’t show up in primetime. In primetime, we were watching just 1:53 minutes, up by only a minute from the year before. That means we’re spending more time watching morning TV, daytime, latenights and weekends, than ever before.

New York Interconnect announced the addition of five new networks to its spot advertising menu for a total of 45 cable networks across the NY area, reaching 3.4 million subscribers. The five new nets under the NY Interconnect umbrella are MTV2, Game Show Network, ESPN Classic, Golf and Speed.  New York Interconnect is a partnership between Cablevision and Comcast.

Discovery Kids on NBC will begin rolling out its 2005-2006 Saturday morning line-up beginning tomorrow morning October 1, 2005. The lineup includes several returning shows, and the series premiere of Flight 29 Down from Discovery Kids and Hawaii Film Partners. Flight 29 Down is a live action series that follows a group of kids deserted on an island when their plane goes down.  In addition to airing on Discovery Kids on NBC, all of these series will air on the Discovery Kids Channel.  The new season of Darcy’s Wild Life will also air weekday afternoons on Animal Planet.

Q Television Network has been added to Time Warner Cable (TWC) carriage in Rochester and Syracuse, New York.  The network will be available as of October 1.  In Rochester, TWC offers QTN as a pay channel, with a complimentary VOD. Syracuse TWC customers will have access to QTN as a premium choice and a VOD channel.

ESPN Desportes will be carried on the Dish Network’s Latino Tier starting today.  And this weekend, Latino Tier viewers can watch the San Francisco 49ers do battle with the Cardinals in a game played in Mexico City.  All of this represents two firsts – ESPN Desportes first national carriage deal; and the NFL’s first regular season game played outside of the United States.

A new 24/7 digital cable network called the FUNimation Channel launched yesterday.  The channel will feature programming from FUNimation Entertainment’s anime brands, including top-rated shows in Japan that have not aired in the United States. The channel is distributed by OlympuSAT nationwide, making it available to video service providers.  Additionally, the channel plans to launch a website in the next few weeks at funimationchannel.com, which will include the program schedule and how to contact local cable service providers to request the channel.

 * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *ABC has ordered a script for a horror drama from film producer Dan Mancini (Child’s Play), called Kill Switch. The story focuses on a woman who killed her daughter’s murderer, is caught and then executed.  Her afterlife penance is to return every week in the body of a person who will be murdered, and she must determine who her murderer will be and stop it before it happens.  Marc Cherry (Desperate Housewives) will exec produce along with Mancini.

Fox has given a put pilot commitment (pilot that comes with substantial $$ penalties if it doesn’t air) for a new project from the guys who brought you 24, Bob Cochran adn Joel Surnow.  Tentatively titled Thirteen (20th), the project takes a film noir approach to this current day story of a kidnapping and subsequent investigation in Los Angeles.  Unlike 24 which takes 24 episodes to unfold a 24-hour story, Thirteen will unfold over the course of 13 episodes, and then begin with a new story. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *John D. Maatta, has been named COO/The WB Television Network. The announcement was made by Garth Ancier, Chairman, to whom John will report.  In addition to being the network’s General Counsel, John will have the network’s business and operations departments reporting to him including Business Affairs, Finance, Network Distribution including The WB 100+ Station Group, Technology, Legal, Research, Network Operations, Broadcast Standards, and Human Resources.

The Lippin Group announced that Matt Biscuiti has been promoted to Vice President effective immediately.  The announcement was made by Dick Lippin, Chairman/CEO of the international public relations consulting firm. Based in the company’s New York office, Matt is responsible for developing and implementing corporate and consumer communications campaigns with clients ranging from cable television networks to industry associations, advertising and marketing agencies, and companies in the mobile entertainment and new media/technology space.

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. has named Amy Stanton, SVP/Chief Marketing Officer.  Amy will lead ongoing development of the company’s brand architecture and oversee all brand development, messaging, and promotional efforts for MSLO and its business segments.

* RATINGS *Wednesday — A18-49 Analysis:  ABC delivered a strong night on Wednesday scoring an overall 6.3/17 A18-49, according to final numbers from Nielsen Media Research.  CBS was #2 with a 3.5/9, quickly followed by NBC 3.0/8, Fox 2.8/7, UPN 1.7/5, WB .8/2.  At 8p a repeat of Lost on ABC led with a 4.2/12.  CBS’ combo of Still Standing and Yes Dear tied with Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance, each earning an 8 share.  Martha Stewart’s Apprentice scored a mild 2.1/6, down a share point from last week, in a tie with UPN’s America’s Next Top Model. It should be noted, however, that Top Model earned a 3.6/11 among W18-34, in a tie with Fox, winning the hour in this younger demo.   At 9p an original episode of Lost earned a stunning 9.7/24, tripling the share of its closest competition – Criminal Minds on CBS with a 3.3/8. E-Ring on NBC also dropped a share from last week, posting a 2.1/5.  The season debut of Veronica Mars scored a 1.3/3, dropping 50% of its lead-in among A18-49, and a 2.4/6 W18-34..  A tight race at 10p with Invasion in front earning a 5.1/13; both Law & Order and the premiere of CSI: NY delivered a 12 share.

Today’s Trivia Question:  In the 1950s Puerto Vallarta was touted as “little Acapulco.”  Once a film director chose to film his classic movie there, the quiet Mexican Village exploded with tourism, due in part to people discovering a certain film box-office queen hanging out there too. What film was this?  (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone.
