Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 2, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Just ahead of Turner Broadcasting‘s launch of its preschool branded block Cartoonito across EMEA this Monday, September 5, the broadcaster has ordered The Ha! Ha! Hairies (52×12), the first pan-EMEA series for the brand, from Wales-based indie Adastra (Grandpa in my Pocket).  Set to debut on Cartoonito in EMEA in 2012, the new bi-lingual (English and Welsh) series is a live-action series with animated elements. The Ha! Ha! Hairies (or Bla Bla! Blewog as it will be known in Welsh) revolves around a fun-loving hairy family that lives in Hairyland, where laughter and slapstick silent movie style humor are key elements of life.  The new series joins Cartoonito’s line-up, which includes Bananas in Pyjamas from Endemol, Jelly Jamm from Vodka Capital and Baby Looney Tunes from Warner Bros. Animation.  Turner has also picked up all licensing and merchandising rights for the new series.  The Ha! Ha! Hairies is produced with funding from Finance Wales and support from the Welsh Assembly.  S4C is the commissioning broadcaster in the Welsh language.  Cartoonito will launch this Monday as a branded block on Boomerang in all territories where Turner broadcasts across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, except Turkey and the Middle East, where it will launch on Cartoon Network.

Nickelodeon is teaming up with First Lady Michelle Obama‘s Let’s Move campaign and the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition to bring its Worldwide Day of Play (WWDOP) event to Washington, DC to encourage and celebrate active play. On Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Ellipse in Washington, DC, Nickelodeon and its partners will host a full day of activities/games for kids/families designed to encourage physical activities and making other healthy lifestyle choices.  September 24 also marks Nickelodeon’s 8th annual WWDOP, during which Nickelodeon’s networks and websites will go dark from 12-3p to help inspire kids/families to get up, active and out of the house.  Additionally, Mrs. Obama will be featured in an exclusive PSA debuting on Nickelodeon and its digital networks TeenNick, Nicktoons and Nick Jr., tomorrow Saturday, 3, that underlines the importance of play and raises awareness for the WWDOP, the DC event, and the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) Challenge, the latter which encourages kids to be active for an hour a day.  Nickelodeon’s WWDOP is part of the network’s The Big Help campaign ( http://www.nick.com/thebighelp/road-to-wwdop.html ).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Junior‘s September programming lineup includes the new Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Space Adventure special on Monday, September 12 (9-9:55a), and the Never Land Pirates Talk Like A Pirate Day marathon Monday, September 19 (6a-2p), and a new episode.  September will also see the debut of and the new musical short-form series from Little Airplane Productions, Small Potatoes on Tuesday, September 6 (9:25a) and the new animated series 3rd & Bird!, from the BBC and Little Airplane Productions, on Monday, September 26 (12p).  To support the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse special, DisneyJunior.com has launched a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Space Adventure ( www.disneyjunior.com/spaceadventures ) microsite that features themed recipes and crafts and Mickey’s Out of This World Treasure Hunt.  A Talk Like A Never Land Pirate Day ( www.disneyjunior.com/pirate) microsite will debut Friday, September 9, where kids can create animated videos featuring Jake and the Never Land Pirates characters using various pirate says, sound effects and backdrops  these videos can be shared and will be featured in an online gallery.

CBBC (UK) will launch its new natural history series Deadly 360, hosted by naturalist/adventurer Steve Backshall (he also co-hosts the channel’s series Live ‘n’ Deadly, BBC/CBBC’s Deadly 60, among others), later this month.  An investigation series, each episode of Deadly 360 will feature Backshall in a virtual studio using natural history footage to help re-create and analyze forensic details, using various technologies, of three hunts by animal predators.  Deadly 360 is the newest in the series of “Deadly” programming, which also includes Live ‘n’ Deadly, Deadly 60 and Deadly Top 10s and Deadly Art.

Joining CBeebies in Latin America and US Hispanic market next week is the new short form series ZingZillas Zing Bop (20×5), featuring the uncut songs and footage from the ZingZillas series.  The shorts will debut on September 6, between 7a – 8p.  In each episode of ZingZillas Zing Bop, DJ Loose and a group of six kids visit the ZingZillas where the kids learn to dance in the Zing Bop portion of the show.  Distributed by Miami-based BBC Worldwide Channels Latin America and US Hispanic, CBeebies is available on Channel 848 as part of Dish Networks’ DishLatino package.

This weekend The Hub will offer sneak peeks two of its new original game shows, and premieres a second season of another.

  • The Game of Life, based on Hasbro’s Game of Life board game, will preview on the network Saturday, September 3 at 4p.  Hosted by comedian Frank Nicotero (The Sharon Osbourne Show, Street Smarts, Primetime in No Time), The Game of Life will debut in its regular time period on Saturday, September 17 at 6p.  The original series is produced by Hasbro Studios.
  • Scrabble Showdown, based on Hasbro’s Scrabble game, gets its sneak peek Saturday, September 3 at 4:30p.  The game show is hosted by Justin Willman (Hubworld, Cupcake Wars) and is also produced by Hasbro Studios.  Scrabble Showdown will bow in its regular time slot on Saturday, September 17 at 6:30p.
  • Season two of the network’s original series Family Game Night debuts with back-to-back, one-hour episodes tonight at 7p and 8p.  The game series is also a Hasbro Studios production.

Joining Sprout‘s programming lineup this Monday, September 5 is the popular mixed live-action and animated series LazyTown, where it will air exclusively Mondays-Fridays at 8:30a and 2:30p.  Designed to motivate get kids through play to be active and make healthy life choices, LazyTown was created by Magnus Scheving as a storybook that then became a live stage show and TV series.  Scheving is also the co-star of the series.  Sprout is a joint venture between NBCUniversal, Hit Entertainment, PBS and Sesame Workshop.

9 Story Entertainment launches the upcoming animated preschool series Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, for international distribution.  Based on the shy tiger character from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood will features stories that model core early childhood development and school readiness skills.  The series is slated to launch in fall 2012 on PBS Kids (US) and CBC (Canada).  Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood was developed by The Fred Rogers Company, which produced Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, in association with Out of the Blue Enterprises (Super Why).  The series is executive produced by Kevin Morrison for The Fred Rogers Company, Angela C. Santomero, for Out of the Blue and 9 Story’s Vince Commisso.  The animation for the series will be produced by 9 Story.

MARKETING/LICENSING

DHX Media names Universal Pictures UK as the home entertainment partner for Rastamouse, the CBeebies stop-motion animated series.  Universal plans to release the first Rastamouse DVD title in the UK on October 3, 2011, which will feature six episodes of the series as well as bonus content such as three sing-along songs from Rastamouse & Da Easy Crew and printable activities.  A Rastamouse Company Production for CBeebies, Rastamouse is produced by Greg Boardman and Eugenio Perez of Three Stones Media, in association with Dinamo Productions, Little Roots and DHX Media, which handles worldwide TV sales (excluding the UK) and worldwide licensing and merchandising. The production is supported by the Wales Creative IP Fund.  The Rastamouse animated series is based on the books by Genevieve Webster and Michael De Souza.

Hit Entertainment and publisher Haynes have teamed again, this time to create the Bob the Builder Owners’ Workshop Manual, which launches this week in the UK.  The new tome invites fans to discover how all the Bob the Builder machine characters function to ‘get the job done’ with the help of color cutaway drawings that reveal what is inside each machine while providing explanations of how they work, what they do, and how they help build and repair things.  Additionally, kids/families can learn about hydraulics, caterpillar tracks, among other things, in the Haynes Manuals release.  Previously, Hit and Haynes created and released a Haynes manual for Hit’s Thomas & Friends.

HIP Brands (Henson Independent Properties), The Jim Henson Company’s third party licensing banner, inks new international licensing agents for the tween/teen/young adult aimed multiplatform product/online world Psyclops ( www.psyclopshq.com ).  New agents for Psyclops include: Spain’s Arize Licensing, which will handle brand licensing for the property throughout Europe (excluding the UK and France, as well as Israel and Russia); Gaumont Group’s Alphanim will oversee licensing in France; Wild Pumpkin International Licensing will represent the brand in Australia; and Segal Licensing will serve as the licensing rep in Canada.  HIP Brands will showcase Psyclops at Brand Licensing Europe this October to develop a range of branded consumer products across key categories including toys, designer plush, apparel, home furnishings, stationery, gifts, social expression, personal care, publishing, food and electronics.  Additionally, a series of new video shorts are being produced for the web and work on an active social media network campaign is also underway.

September is National Literacy Month here in the US, and to celebrate Lionsgate, in cooperation with Scholastic and Scribd, will make The Hunger Games fans happy by offer a previously unreleased sample, “the entirety of Chapter 2,” from the Suzanne Collin’s book.  The sample chapter can be read and shared, along with the first chapter, of The Hunger Games by using a new application created in partnership with Scribd, a social reading platform.  The app lets users read the chapters directly from within Facebook ( www.facebook.com/thehungergamesmovie ) and share them with their friends on Scribd, Facebook and Twitter.  Additionally, as part of a further effort to promote reading and books this month, Lionsgate, Scholastic and Scribd have teamed with the non-profit DonorsChoose.org to create the Read a Chapter, Win a Library sweepstakes that will run all month.  Throughout September, all fans that reads The Hunger Games in the Scribd social reader app will be entered in the sweepstakes for a chance to win a classroom library of books for one of the public schools served by DonorsChoose.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

DCD Rights appoints Michael Jackson to Sr. Sales Executive and Rick Barker’s promotion to Head of Sales.  Jackson joins the international distributor from MoMedia, where he handled sales and acquisitions for Europe.  He previously toiled for Zodiak Rights, DRG and Zeal Entertainment.  Barker, who has been with the company since 2006, will be responsible for the sales team as well as taking over sales for Australia and New Zealand, and retains the European and Nordic territories.  Additionally, Angela Harvey takes on responsibility for digital sales as well as on theatric and airlines.
