09/29/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 29, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Does Dennis Rodman, noted for being a really snappy dresser, need a makeover, or will he just host a makeover show?  The specifics were unclear, but Mark Cuban, head dog at HDNet, announced a new makeover series on his network set to launch in January, and starring the former NBA-er. Cuban mentioned the show while he was making at appearance at Advertising Week in NYC. Cuban also said that the network’s new series Dan Rather Reports is set to launch on October 24.

Tonight’s Premiere:
Sci Fi:  Doctor Who at 8p
CMT:    Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team at 9p

Tonight’s Finale:
Fox: Celebrity Duets at 9p (part 2)

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

TBS is getting into the late night business with plans to launch 10 Items or Less on November 27 at 11p, using Family Guy as its lead-in.  The comedy series is from Sony Pictures Television, and according to Variety, the cable network has ordered five episodes to run through the end of the year on Wednesday nights.  10 Items or Less is about a guy who moves back to his hometown and takes over management of the family business – a local grocery store.  And while we talking about future premieres on TBS – here’s another.  My Boys debuts on November 28 at 10p, using Sex and the City as its lead-in launchpad.  This show is about a tomboy sports writer who is looking for a lasting relationship.

Tonight at 9p, CMT premieres Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team. The eight-episode series takes an insider point of view showing the process nearly one thousand women go through to become one of 36 chosen cheerleaders. Episodes one and eight are one-hour specials, while episodes two through seven are 30-minutes in length. The series is produced by Triage Entertainment.

BBC America’s
new dramedy Fat Friends, about a group of people who meet each week at a diet club and the various neuroses they go through to lose weight, will debut on November 2 at 10p.

BET
will premiere Beef: The Series, produced by Quincy Jones III who also produced the Beef DVDs, on October 4 at 9p. The show explores the pop culture tension between rivals in various fields from music to sports and more. The half-hour show will air Wednesdays at 9p until the finale on November 8. Encore presentations will air Mondays at 3p, Tuesdays at 10p, Wednesdays at 830p, Thursdays at 1a; and Sundays at 2a.

Tribune Company has retained Merrill Lynch and Citigroup as financial advisors to assist the company as it explores strategic ways to add shareholder value. Additionally, an independent special committee of the board of directors has appointed Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom as its legal counsel and it will hire its own financial advisor. The process is expected to conclude by the end of this year and will be announced by the board.

* BROADBAND & DIGITAL *

NBC Universal and Intel revealed the new NBC VIP Access online service which will offer on-demand broadband entertainment content for free to those with Intel® Viiv™ technology-based PCs and Centrino® mobile technology-based laptops. This service begins this week at NBC.com, by giving Intel users the chance to download more than 20 NBC Universal broadcast and online shows in high-resolution video. The entire seasons of Heroes and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip will be included, in addition to premieres of other NBC and SCI FI shows, NBC News specials, webisodes provided by BravoTV.com and content from NBCSports.com.

Mark Burnett Prods and AOL are at it again with another online game, set to launch on October 5.  The Flushed Away Underground Adventure is based on the upcoming DreamWorks Animation/Aardman Features movie Flushed Away which opens nationwide November 4, 2006.  See here for more info: http://movies.aol.com/flushed-away-game

Concurrent, a global on-demand technology provider, will team with ANYTIME, the Singapore-based VOD channel serving Asia Pacific, in the ANYTIME Technology Partner Program. The program’s goal is to decrease the time to find and deploy VOD services in the Asia Pacific region. Technology partners with ANYTIME will participate on two levels: technology compliance as well as cooperation and co-marketing.

* PRODUCTION / DEVELOPMENT / CASTING *

CBS has ordered an 11th season of Amazing Race from Bruckheimer TV and Earthview, with Touchstone TV and Amazing Race Prods.

Also at CBS, the network has given a put pilot commitment to a project from 20th Century Fox TV and writers Josh Sternin and Jeff Ventimilia called Genius Bar. The setting for this comedy pilot is a mall, and more specifically on the employees of two stores – the Apple store and a teen-clothing store along the lines of a Hollister or Abercrombie & Fitch.

Fox has ordered a short pilot for an animated project from Happy Madison Prods and 20th Century Fox TV called Animals. This satire will take an upclose and personal look at suburban life, only using animals instead of people.

Added to the cast of CBS’ Criminal Minds is Paget Brewster, joining the team of profilers, led by Mandy Patinkin’s character.

Casting Call: Yahoo is taking applications for a new web-based show called Hook Me Up. The premise: with the holidays coming up, people would like to “hook up” a loved one to the latest technological gadget but can’t afford to. Maybe mom and dad need a new computer to see the grandkid’s photos; or your boyfriend wants a new HD plasma TV. Yahoo will select three people who will be given their holiday wishes with whatever device they desire. For more information and to fill out an application visit www.embassyrow.com.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

According to various reports, VP/GM of Cablevision’s Fuse network, Catherine Mullen, will officially announce her departure from the network some time in the next few weeks, although internally she has already resigned.  Mullen joined Fuse last January.  During the course of her tenure, albeit brief, the ratings for the network have fallen off, with an average primetime total viewing audience in 3rd qtr of just 21,000, while available to 50 million homes. Reports are Mullen has a new destination, but has not made it public yet.

Turner Entertainment Group has appointed Marna Grantham as VP/Program Planning and Acquisitions to research programming options for its entertainment networks and negotiate with studios and distributors to acquire programming that fits with each network’s strategy. Marna is based in Atlanta and reports to Jonathan Katz, SVP/Program Planning and Acquisitions for the entertainment division.

The research and consulting company, SmithGeiger has elevated Jon Michaels to EVP/Media, Entertainment and Technology to provide strategic operational supervision of the company. Furthermore, Chris Lang has been promoted to SVP/Research and will oversee the senior and junior research analysts and is responsible for the quality and timeliness of the research. Both report to Dave Smith, CEO and Seth Geiger, President.

Beth Greenwald joins RDF USA as SVP/Development and Current and is charged with the development of the company’s U.S. programming on both coasts. She will also work on the RDF shows Wife Swap on ABC; the new series Ice T’s Rap School for VH1; and the upcoming The Coreys: Return of the Lost Boys for A&E. Beth will report to Greg Goldman, EVP/Development and Current.

Victoria Hoffman has left Cynopsis MCE where she was an Ad Sales Executive, and opted for the print media by taking a position in Miami as Director/National Ad Sales for Southeast Resort Media.  We wish her well.  Ad sales for Cynopsis MCE will be handled by Mark Bohn, VP/Director Ad Sales for Cynopsis, until this position is refilled.

Friday Fun Fact:
The greatest depth in the Pacific ocean is 36220 feet. And you thought just the top of the water looked big.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1829-London’s Metropolitan Police Service is organized.  The new force’s members were known as the “Bobbies” after Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel.  Their headquarters were at Scotland Yard in Whitehall, a place that lent its name to the police headquarters itself and, informally, to the force as a whole.  The City of London organized its own police force ten years later, and the two remain separate to this day.
