Normally this type of announcement would appear under Executive Moves, but I couldn’t wait to tell you … How exciting is this? Chuck Bolkcom named President and Chief Operating Officer of Cynopsis Media LLC, effective October 1! Yep, that’s us! In this newly-established position at Cynopsis, Chuck will oversee the company’s strategic development of sales, marketing, product, and operations. Pretty cool, huh! Chuck makes the move to Cynopsis from Vuze Inc., a broadband video content delivery network, where he was VP/Advertising Sales. Prior to Vuze, Chuck was at Reed Business Information as Group Publisher of the Reed Television Group, during which he led a major turn-around of both Broadcasting & Cable and Multichannel News magazines. At PricewaterhouseCoopers, he was a Director in the PwC Entertainment, Media and Communications advisory practice. Can you tell we’re pretty excited about this?! You can reach Chuck via email at Oxygen picked up the exclusive cable rights to reality competition series America’s Next Top Model from CBS Television Distribution. Top Model joins Oxygen’s lineup next January and the network has the rights to the full library of episodes including those from the current 11th cycle airing now on The CW, the 12th cycle which is currently in production as well as repeat episodes of any future cycles. Top Model is produced by 10 by 10 Entertainment in association with Bankable Productions. MTV’s programming lineup on October 4 will document celebrity stunts celebrities that lands them behind bars as well as an event that showcases crazy misdemeanors live. The series debut of MTV Ranked opens at 530p with a one-hour special, Celebrity Busts: Ranked. At 630p, MTV will air a 30m Busted followed by Busted: Live at 7p, a three-hour, real-time event where Busted cameras will ride around with law enforcement in Ohio and Maryland looking to capture zany crimes. MTV also announced it will return the reality series From G’s to Gents for a second season. Produced by 51 Minds and executive produced by Jamie Foxx for FoxxKing Entertainment, a new crop of bad boys who want to change their ways will be documented during 10 new episodes that begin first quarter 2009. Author/recording artist, Fonzworth Bentley will continue to host. ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
CBS Paramount Network TV will develop a television series based on a new series of mystery novels by Judi McCoy, according to Variety. CBS Paramount optioned Hounding the Pavement, the first of a three-book deal which will be published by Penguin paperback division Obsidian Mysteries next March. Juniper Place Productions’ Jeffrey Kramer will produce the TV series and Hy Conrad (Monk) will adapt the book for television. Hounding the Pavement is about a Manhattan dogwalker who tries to find out who murdered her client with help from her doggie charges. For those who loved the 1970s version of The Partridge Family a modern-day edition of the family series is in the works by Reveille and Geffen Records in collaboration with the original rights holder, Sony Pictures TV, reports Variety. Jeff Rake (Cashmere Mafia) will write the script as well as executive produce along with Reveille executives and Interscope-Geffen-A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine and Geffen Records chairman Ron Fair. The series idea is currently being pitched to networks with a commitment expected soon. The genesis of the project came from talks between Fair and Howard Owens, Managing Director of Reveille who wanted to develop a family series that merges with the music industry. Specifics on the show are sketchy yet those involved say the new version will look nothing like the old which ran on ABC from 1970-74. HBO optioned the Tom Wolfe novel I Am Charlotte Simmons and is in the initial phase of developing an hour-long series, per Variety. Tina Brown and Bill Haber of Ostar Productions will produce and the duo is seeking a writer for the pilot. The 2004 novel is about a poor yet smart young woman from the South who goes to a fictional Ivy League university on a full scholarship as a freshman and encounters a social and sexual awakening. Casting Call: Food Network announced a national talent search has begun for season five of The Next Food Network Star. Amateur and professional chefs are encouraged to apply. In addition, the network will host several open casting calls with casting directors on hand and applicants should bring the application, a photograph and resume/bio. October 3; New York City October 6; Los Angeles October 15; Charleston October 23; Portland, OR October 23; and Philadelphia October 29. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The US music industry has finally reached a deal regarding mechanical royalties for songs played by online music services for streaming and limited music downloads. The agreement, which now has to be approved by US Copyright Royalty Judges, proposes that interactive webcasters and online subscriptions services pay a straightforward royalty rate of 10.5% of revenue. National Music Publishers Association President David Israelite referred to the deal as an “historic agreement,” ensuring that songwriters and publishers can now “thrive” in the digital age. However the agreement leaves performance royalties that must be paid to music labels in place, (which increase from $.0014 per song, per listener this year to $.0019 per song, per listener in 2010.) These rates are expected to cripple independent radio stations and web 2.0 services like Pandora, which has already warned that it may have to pack it in if the fee structure isn’t amended. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Ahoy thar Johnny! Johnny Depp will be back as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean 4. But Disney has Depp re-teaming with director Tim Burton to take on the role of the Mad Hatter in Burton’s stop-motion animated adaptation of Alice in Wonderland (2010). Depp will also play Tonto in Disney’s movie version of The Lone Ranger (2010), produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Full edition: CYN KIDS. CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The National Hockey League and Hong Kong’s All Sports Network signed a multi-year agreement for the rights to broadcast the NHL across all TV platforms, including HDTV and IPTV in most of Asia (including the Indian sub-continent). The content will be offered on ASN, a new channel Yes TV, with over 130 NHL regular-season games. Korean distribution of NHL games on ASN will start in the second year of the deal. The deal excludes Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL. ~ RATINGS ~
