Good morning. It’s Friday, September 25, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Galleon Holdings enters into a co-production and distribution pact with Chinese movie producer/distributor, PolyBona Film Distribution, for Galleon’s animated feature film Sokator-422.  Under the deal Galleon and PolyBona will co-produce the Sokator-422 animated feature film, which is based on Galleon’s multi-platform sci-fi football fantasy of the same name.  PolyBona will distribute the film through movie theaters and other media channels in China, and its associate company Distribution Workshop will distribute it via its network across South East Asia, including Hong Kong, Macau, Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, East Timor, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.  Additionally, Galleon is in negotiations with distributors for other territories.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Disney Channel has begun production in LA on its new music-filled original movie Starstruck.  Slated to premiere in 2010, the movie stars Sterling Knight (Sonny With A Chance) and introduces Danielle Campbell.  Starstruck revolves around girl (Campbell) who a Midwestern girl that develops a relationship with a Hollywood heartthrob/pop star (Knight) and what happens when she returns home and he denies their relationship.  The soundtrack will feature tracks written by songwriters Mitch Allan, Jessi Alexander, Adam Anders, Aris Aronchitis, Peer Astrom, Ali Dee, Andy Dodd, Nikki Hassman, Jeannie Lurie, Niclas Molinder, Chen Neeman, Joacim Persson and Adam Watts.

Turner Broadcasting gives the go ahead on its first UK produced full-length animated series from its two-year old production entity Cartoon Network Development Studio Europe.  The Amazing World of Gumball (40×11) is aimed at K6-11 and will feature a mix of 2D and 3D animation and live-action.  Additionally, Turner is throwing its financial weight behind indie production company Dandelion Studios to produce the series.  The move adds 25 jobs at Dandelion, which will spend the next two years producing the series.  The Amazing World of Gumball follows the adventures of a mischievous cat, Gumball, and his pals both at school and at home.  The project was Finn Arnesen’s final commission for the studio. Arnesen plans to exit the company at the end of next month.

CBeebies commissions two new in-house live-action preschool productions.  Set to launch in 2010, both projects follow real kids in their day-to-day lives.

  • Let’s Celebrate (15×15) – aimed at K4-6, the series features different kids celebrating a wide range of religious and cultural festivals around the UK.  Hosted by Patrick Lynch (Razzle Dazzle), each episode will also showcase a musical or dramatic performance to help tell the story of the holiday/festival being featured.
  • Same Smile (13×15) is a mixed live-action/animated show for K2-4, which follows presented Nisha Anil as she bikes across the UK with her three cuddly pandas visiting kids and discovering how they are similar and different.  The kids in the series help select the theme of the day and take part in activities, with two of the pandas go home with kids to explore their own versions of the day’s theme.  The series is a BBC Scotland production for CBeebies.

Director Chris Wedge (Ice Age, Robots) is set to direct the animated feature film Leaf Men that will be financed by Fox Animation and produced by Wedge’s Blue Sky Studios, per Variety.  Leaf Men is based on the kid’s book by author/illustrator/filmmaker William Joyce, The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs.  Jim Hart is writing the screenplay.  Though Wedge’s had developed Leaf Men for Fox, the movie almost made its way to Disney and Pixar with Fox in the end deciding to go ahead with the film.

Mattel‘s Barbie is coming to life under a movie deal with Universal and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe will indeed make it to the big screen with a new deal in place at Sony, per Variety.

  • Laurence Mark (Julia and Julia) has signed on to produce the new live-action Barbie movie and is on the search for a writer for the project.  Executive producing the movie based on the 50-year-old doll are Barbie GM and Mattel SVP Richard Dickson and VP/Entertainment for Barbie Rob Hudnut.  As you are no doubt aware there have been 16 animated direct-to-video Barbie titles, which have done quite well, not to mention the brand has expanded across the web and into just about every area of licensing and merchandising.  There is no date for the Barbie movie release.
  • He-Man is back in the movie pipeline after Mattel and Warner Bros. and Joel Silver’s studio based Silver Pictures went their separate ways on the project earlier this month.  The new deal sees Sony producing the movie based on Mattel’s action figure line along with Escape Artists.  Sony and Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are developing the movie from the ground up.  No word yet on will pen the script.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network US will premiere Marathon Media‘s animated series Gormiti on Monday, October 5, 2009.  Additionally, Playmates Toys and Giochi Preziosi will unveil a new line of collectible Gormiti figures and accessories that week at the Fall Toy Previews in Dallas.  The new Playmates Toys and Giochi Preziosi Gormiti products debuting in 2010 include mini figures, special feature action figures, mechanical action playsets and role-play toys.

Decode Enterprises, the distribution arm of DHX Media, signs further deals for Grandpa in My Pocket (52×12) with broadcasters including Canal+ (France), French-speaking TFO (Canada) and Knowledge (Canada), CBeebies Latin America, NRK (Norway) and MTV3 (Finland).  Additionally, DHX Licensing names Stella Projects as licensing agent for the property in Australia and New Zealand.  Developed and produced by Adastra Creative, Decode Enterprises holds the TV and DVD rights to Grandpa in My Pocket.

Discovery Networks Latin America/US Hispanic and Breakthrough Entertainment complete a cable broadcast deal with Discovery Kids Latin America for the animated preschool series My Big Big Friend (52×11).  Produced by Breakthrough Films & Television with Brazil-based 2DLab, the series is set to premiere on the network in 2011.

Zodiak Entertainment plans to launch 20 new format shows at Mipcom next month include the family program That’s My Kid.  The 60-minute family-aimed series asks parents the burning question – So you think you know what’s going on in your kid’s head? Parents will have to prove they actually know.

Program Call: If your company is attending MIPCOM or MIP JR in early October with programming to sell, Cynopsis Media is producing our annual MIPCOM Shopping Guide available to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers on Thursday, October 1. Friday Fun Fact:  Mosquito repellents don’t actually repel the little bitters. Rather they hide you. The spray blocks the mosquito’s sensors so you become invisible.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:  This show premiered in primetime on this day in NBC more than 40 years ago.  It had originally aired in the afternoon on ABC.  What is the show? THE BULLWINKLE SHOW  (on ABC it was the Rocky & His Friends)  Kudos to … nobody!  Whoo-hoo! Found a tough one!!

Today’s Trivia Question:   Where is Tony Packo’s Cafe and who is the one guy we know frequented this place?  (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
