Cynopsis: Kids!
09/24/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 24, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Warner Premiere enters into a deal with Dolphin Entertainment (Zoey 101, Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide) to co-finance/co-distribute new multi-platform digital series with noted talent.  The first two series under the pact will are Aim High, a teen-centric action series produced by McG (Chuck, Charlie’s Angels) and Wonderland Sound and Vision, and H+ a sci-fi thriller produced by Bryan Singer (X-Men, Battlestar Galactica) in association with Bad Hat Harry (House).  Aim High follows the adventures of Nick Green, who live a double life as a high school sophomore starting a new school by day and on of 64 government-trained teen agents by night.  Set to begin shooting this fall, Thor Freudenthal (Hotel for Dogs, Diary of a Wimpy Kid) will direct the series, which is written by Heath Corson (Living with Abandon, Scary Godmother) and Richie Keen (Living with Abandon), and Lance Sloane will Produce. Peter Murrieta (Wizards of Waverly Place) will served as Executive Producer, with Corson and Keen also Executive Producing.  H+ is targeted to a more adult audience.

Michael Eisner’s Vuguru are partnering inks a two-year distribution deal with Fireworks International, a unit of ContentFilm. The terms of the deal were not announced.  Under the pact, Fireworks gets first-look multi-platform distribution rights (excluding US and Canada) to Vuguru’s upcoming productions.  The first project signed under the agreement is for the young-adult drama Pretty Tough (18×5-7, and as a 90×1 feature), which will debut at Mipcom 2010.  The series, which is based on the young adult novel by Liz Tigelaar (Dawson’s Creek, Brothers & Sisters, Life Unexpected), Pretty Tough revolves around two teen sisters that couldn’t be more different and who are forced to compete together in soccer.  Fireworks International and Vuguru previously collaborated on distribution of the thriller The Booth at the End (62 episodes).

MTV Networks International (MTVNI) will expand its HD services across its brands over the next year with the launch of new channels and programming.  The initiative will see Nickelodeon HD launch as a 24-hour channel in the UK on Sky from October 5, 2010, which comes on the heels of the launch of Comedy Central HD this summer.  MTVNI will then introduce Nickelodeon HD channel in 2011 in markets including Poland, Russia, Israel and Brazil.  When the Nickelodeon HD channel debuts next month, the company’s first HD service MTVNHD, will stop broadcasting the Nickelodeon weekend programming block and return its focus to music-related content.  Nickelodeon in the UK is a joint venture between MTV Networks and BSkyB.

MORE KIDS STUFF

This Monday, September 27 marks the premiere of Sesame Street‘s 41st season on PBS KidsSesame Workshop, which produces Sesame Street, announced yesterday that the season would not include a scheduled appearance by Katy Perry singing a version of her song Hot N’ Cold with Elmo, which was slated to air alter this year.  After previewing the segment featuring Katy Perry with Elmo online via You Tube, the producers received negative feedback from some parents, which was basically about how the singer was dressed, and have decided not to include the segment in the regular series.  The video will still be available via You Tube ( www.youtube.com ) and on katyperry.com ( www.katyperry.com ).  In its statement, Sesame Workshop said: “Sesame Street has a long history of working with celebrities across all genres, including athletes, actors, musicians and artists. Sesame Street has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult.  We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver.  We also value our viewer’s opinions and particularly those of parents.  In light of the feedback we’ve received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube online, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers.”

Zoinks! Those meddling kids and their dog return in the new mixed live-action/CG movie Scooby-Doo! Curse Of The Lake Monster, which will premiere on Cartoon Network Saturday, October 16, 7-9p, as part of the network’s family-targeted Flicks.  From Warner Premiere, Scooby-Doo! Curse Of The Lake Monster is a co-production between The Atlas Entertainment, Nine, 8 Entertainment, and Telvan Productions.  The new movie includes appearances by Marion Ross (Happy Days), Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek) and Ted McGinley (Married with Children).  The movie will be supported via CartoonNetwork.com ( www.cartoonnetwork.com ) with behind-the-scenes videos shot by the cast during the making of the original TV movie.  The videos roll out weekly now through the movie’s premiere.  Additionally, CartoonNetwork.com will feature range of Scooby-Doo games, including two new games available for a limited time through a partnership with KidsWB.com.  Warner Home Video will distribute Scooby-Doo! Curse Of The Lake Monster on DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, OnDemand and for download in spring 2011.  This new Scooby-Doo movie is a follow-up to last year’s movie, Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins, which became the network’s most watched telecast ever.

Cookie Jar Entertainment heads to Mipcom where it will offer a range of programming including the new tween-targeted series Decidedly Debra and the preschool series Ella, as well as Johnny Test, which is headed into its fifth season, Kung Fu Dino Posse, and 26 new episodes of the preschool series Caillou.  Additionally, Cookie Jar will showcase kid-targeted scary titles from its library including the mixed live-action/animated series Dark Oracle, the anthology series Are You Afraid of the Dark?, as well as the preschool series Mona the Vampire.

  • Decidedly Debra is a live-action series that follows Debra and her best friend Preston as they look liven up life in their town.  Created by Andrew Nichols and Daryl Vickers (Jimmy Neutron, Fairly OddParents, Back to the Barnyard), Decidedly Debra marks Cookie Jar’s first tween-targeted live-action effort.  The series has been picked up by Family Channel (Canada).
  • Ella is a CGI animated, featuring 2D backgrounds, preschool series based on the book series by Carmela and Steve D’amico.  Like the books, the series follows the inquisitive and helpful young elephant named Ella and her friends as they learn about teamwork, cooperation and problem solving.

Nerd Corps Entertainment prepares to launch season two of its original property League of Super Evil while also finalizing new TV deals for the series.  Picking up the League of Super Evil is Super RTL (Germany) for its TOGGO kids programming block in spring 2011.  Also taking the series is TV3 (Spain), also for air in 2011, and Disney XD in Germany (where the series recently launched).  Further new deals include PGS Entertainment acquires the rights for several new European and Latin American territories, which will be announced soon.
