Cynopsis

09/23/05

Good morning.  It’s Friday, September 23, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

And the axe has fallen for the second time, and only five days after the official start of the 2004-05 television season (second, if you count syndicated A Current Affair earlier this week) . The Chris O’Donnell/Adam Goldberg show on Fox called Head Cases has aired just twice, Wednesdays at 9p.  The first week it ranked #4 in the time period, posting a 2.4/6 A18-49.  This past Wednesday it slipped to a 1.2/3 in the demo, ranking 5th. Opposite Lost, Head Cases lost its way, earning just one-eighth the share of the ABC megahit. Producers of the show were advised of the cancellation late yesterday.  Filling the Wed 9p hour for the next two weeks will be repeats of Nanny 911.  Following the baseball playoffs and World Series, new eps of Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy will be slotted here as of November 2.

Tonight’s Finales:
Sci Fi:
Stargate Atlantis at 8p

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC      Super Nanny at 8p
CBS     Ghost Whisperer at 8p, Numb3rs at 10p
FOX     The Bernie Mac Show (1 hr) at 8p, Killer Instinct at 9p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *ESPN has sealed a carriage deal for its ESPNU, a new 24/7 college sports network, to DISH Network’s America’s Top 180 programming package.  Launched in March 2005, ESPNU will televise 300+ live college sports events this year including a range of football and men/women’s basketball mixed with baseball, softball, volleyball, lacrosse, ice hockey, wrestling etc.  Additionally, ESPNU offers replays of ABC Sports, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Regional Television games.  The addition of ESPNU to its line-up is part of DISH Network’s increased emphasis on sports programming, says Eric Sahl, SVP/Programming, DISH Network.

Buena Vista Television may be considering a new show for the fall syndication market called Wedding in a Week, says Hollywood Reporter.  A project from Lighthearted Entertainment, the show focuses on the planning process.

An upcoming episode of Sundance Channel‘s new series Iconoclasts (Grey Goose Ent/Conde Nast Media Group) will featuring the pairing once again of Paul Newman and Robert Redford, says Variety.  Redford is the founder of the network, and for this series he is also executive producer.  This time the pairing of the duo will have a slightly different the dynamic – Redford is the interviewer.  Six eps were ordered by Sundance, with other episodes looking long and hard at Samuel L. Jackson, Sumner Redstone and Newman, among others.  The series debuts on November 17 – the Newman episode is the last in the series, scheduled for December 22.  Merry Christmas.

CBS will begin offering podcasts of 60 Minutes interviews – starting Monday.  The first podcast will be Lesley Stahl’s interview from Sunday night’s opener, with former American hostage Roy Hallums who was held captive in Iraq for 10 months.

SNAPSHOT: Madison Avenue on the Roller Coaster
by Louis Chunovic

This time the storm clouds on Madison Avenue’s horizon include actual Gulf Coast hurricanes, with their devastating potential to drive up the price of gas and oil, which in turn could mean less consumer spending in the all-important fourth-quarter holiday season. Higher oil prices also will mean higher manufacturing and distribution costs for all manner of advertisers, who then will be tempted to cost marketing and advertising budgets to compensate.
Those were the topline concerns voiced by the sharp-eyed senior media buyers who gathered at the Waldorf Astoria for an annual TV industry rite, the International Radio and Television Society’s “Media Buying Chiefs” Newsmaker Breakfast, held this morning. In 2001, the IRTS Media Buying Chiefs meeting was one of the very first industry events in New York after 9-11, and it set much of the tone for advertisers, programmers and marketers for the next several months to come. Ever since, insiders have eyed this event closely. This year’s breakfast is sure to give them plenty to chew on.
“Consumer confidence right now is on a roller coaster,” said Donna Speciale, President/U.S. Broadcast, MediaVest. “Oil will affect our clients,” she added.
Spending by major advertising categories is down already, even before the effects of rising oil costs have reverberated through the TV advertising economy. “Pharma is down, movies are down and Detroit is down,” said Charlie Rutman, CEO/MPG North America.
In fact, according to Tom Wolzien, the veteran analyst who moderated the event that drew approximately 500 insiders, about two-thirds of them from the “seller” side of the business, “I was amazed to see that in the first half [of the year] 20 of the top 25 [advertising] categories were down.”
“The biggest issue is whether television as a medium is flattening out,” said Tim Spengler, EVP/Director National Broadcast, Initiative. Most of the panelists agreed that spending is increasingly moving from “traditional media” (i.e., TV, radio, magazines) to “non-traditional” (e.g., the Internet, in-store advertising, ads on cell phones, etc), even as personal video recorders and video-on-demand are introducing viewers to a world without any commercials at all.
When it comes PVRs’ impact, which is still small (around 8% penetration) but growing, “I don’t think the boogie man is here yet,” said Bill Koenigsberg, President/CEO, Horizon Media. That was one of the few things the panelists disagreed on.  “I think the boogie man is here,” Rutman countered. “The opportunity to avoid commercials is enormous,” and he pointed to such new media outlets as non-commercial satellite radio.
But the threats from the changing media landscape present opportunities as well, several of the panelists suggested, with possibilities including more product placement and single-sponsor programs. “We have conditioned the viewer to leave the room” when commercials come on, Speciale said. “Our ads need to be a little more entertaining.”
Madison Avenue’s near-term bottom line? Keep a weather eye on the fourth quarter. If consumer spending stumbles, watch out: The roller coaster is probably heading down in 2006.

 * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *David E. Kelley has re-upped his production deal with 20th for another three year term, the same place he has been re-upping for the past 20 years.

Fox has ordered up a script for a 60m drama project from producer Glen Mazzara (The Shield).  The project focuses on a female FBI agent who happens upon a political conspiracy.  A significant penalty is attached to the project in the event it does not move forward.

NBC‘s drama pilot The Black Donnellys from NBC Universal Television, has cast Jonathan Tucker and Olivia Wilde in the two lead roles. Also cast is Kirk Acevedo.

CBS has given a put pilot commitment to a sitcom from Warner Bros. TV, about three best friends, who are also all young mothers.  According to Variety, the show does not have a title yet, but is sort of a S&x in the City with moms, as each of the three women have very different views about life, love, marriage. The project was developed by Gabrielle Allen, a former co-exec prod on Scrubs.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *James Anderson will join Cartoon Network as VP/Public Relations. James will oversee external and internal communications supporting the domestic Cartoon Network brand, including the flagship television network and its sister services, Adult Swim and Boomerang; and Cartoonnetwork.com.  Anderson will be based in Atlanta and report to Shirley Powell, SVP/Corp. Communications for TBS, Inc., while working closely with Jim Samples, executive vice president and general manager of Cartoon Network.

* RATINGS *Wednesday — A18-49 Analysis:  ABC trounced the competition on Wednesday pulled a whopping 7.5/20 average for the whole of prime among A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research.  CBS was #2 and averaged a 3.4/9 overall, followed by NBC 3.1/8, Fox 2.0/5, UPN 1.9/5, WB 0.7/2. At 8pm ABC aired a special recap episode of Lost’s first season, which averaged a 5.6/16. CBS, NBC and Fox all averaged a 7 share for the 8p hour, and that includes the Martha Stewart Apprentice show, as well as the premieres of Still Standing and Yes Dear on CBS. At 9p the premiere of Lost delivered a 10.0/24, three times better in share than the #2 show for the hour – a repeat of the 2-hour CSI series finale from last season. NBC’s E-Ring earned a 2.6/6.  America’s Next Top Model 2-hour 8-10p premiere earned a 2.3/6 A18-49; however, among the younger W18-34 it earned a 4.7/12, second only to ABC, and giving UPN it’s best Wednesday ever in this demo. At 10p on the strength perhaps of its lead-in, ABC’s Invasion won the hour with a 7.1/18, well ahead of NBC’s Law & Order premiere (4.1/11) and the final hour of CSI repeat (4.5/11).
